what if you just follow along with japanese subtitles and english subtitles?

Why don't you just stick with reading until you can confortably read Jsubs without pausing and looking dictionaries as much?
>>
>>142228424
because it's really not much different from reading in general and because this is also the kind of content I want to consume right now

another reason is because looking up words is not a problem since I'm parsing through with rikaisama and exporting new vocabulary I encounter to anki

it may sound a little tedious, but I get a little bit of everything this way

I think it's a very balanced way to learn and as I stick with it, it will get much easier and quicker.

I have a stupid question, I hope someone will help my stupid ass to understand.

Okay so ございました is the past, but I'm pretty sure I heard someone saying おはよう ございました or ありがとう ございました

That wouldn't make any sense right?
A hotel employee said something like that in the morning.

I didn't know any Japanese back then, other than what anime taught me at least, so I assumed it was just more polite than ございます I learned that it is actually the past form a day ago.
>>
>>142231144

「煙草」と名付けられた女子を会ったことある。その父が農夫だと思う。
>>
>>142232057
It doesn't seem like it makes much sense in those forms, because they're more or less just set expressions, but if you see what they're based off of it makes more sense

For example ありがとう is from 有り難い, which just means "grateful", so more literally ありがとうございました just means "I was grateful (that you just did whatever for me (and I'm now expressing that gratitude))"

I don't think Japanese past form necessarily has connotations of "the past" either, it just indicates that something has happened, so it might sound weirder if you think of it from a more English idea that it was in the past, rather than the Japanese idea that it's simply been done

Is there a version of Tae Kim's guide in full romanji? If it's aimed for beginners it's really retarded that he uses kanas, let alone kanjis. Practically the only people who can use the guide like this are people who quit learning after a few years and learning kanas, and then restarted from zero.

No, it's like telling someone to learn the alphabet before learning the rest of a language, which I'm sure is how you also learned your own language when you started academically studying it in school.

>Makes me want to just quit learning the language. You're supposed to grab the learner's attention with something interesting first.
Tae Kim doesn't profit from having users of his guide keep going/quitting early on, giving you motivation is not his goal. If the efficient way to learn Japanese is too tedious for you then you're in bad luck. You'll have a hard time finding guides tailored to people that get bored quick.

>>142232755
Well not quite.

Are there any other parallel reading books like Read Real Japanese where a Japanese text is picked apart and explained in English line by line?
This is a very useful method for teaching reading natural text, but it seems there's an awful lack of such materials in Japanese.

If the teacher/writer of a guide has even the slightest amount of competence, he can make learning fun and rewarding.
Telling you to "okay, spend the next two weeks grinding these characters and come back" means that a law should be created that forbids that person from ever giving advice or trying to teach others, since it will just ruin the enthusiasm of beginners and make them quit.
It's sad that the "guide" of such an incompetent teacher should be in our resources list.

Not sure why these guys are sperging out over kana. The /djt/ "kana wall" strategy is unnecessarily strict.

You can learn kana and grammar in parallel. Try a textbook. Many of them interleave kana study with other stuff so that students can start speaking Japanese from day 1.
>>
>>142233607
There is nothing wrong with romanji. It's equivalent (even superior) to kana when used for writing a language, and the difference between the two is merely a stylistic choice.
Now, kanji is different since each character also carries a meaning, but kana carries no extra information, so romanji is a perfectly fine replacement for kana-only text.

>>
>>142233650
>The /djt/ "kana wall" strategy is unnecessarily strict.
Yes, for literal retards.
Chinese characters are really helpful and needed when you want to read Japanese. Being afraid of too much effort and therefore not daring to start reading normal Japanese sentences is something very stupid and to be avoided unless you're one of those people who don't mind learning Japanese for four years until they start being literate.
So either you suck it up and learn at least the two baby scripts or you can't learn Japanese.

>>142233749
>There is nothing wrong with romanji. It's equivalent (even superior) to kana when used for writing a language, and the difference between the two is merely a stylistic choice.
How many Japanese sentences are written in "romanji" excluding gaijin learning material? Now how many Japanese sentences are written in kana?
What script accompanies the Chinese characters?
>>
>>142233919
>excluding gaijin learning material?
But anon, this is exactly where it should be used. Yet some dumb shits are writing gaijin beginner's guides with kanji.
>>
>>142233958
Tae Kim if for people that know kana and a few kanji and want to get started on grammar.

If you want to start learning grammar, a few words and hiragana side by side, use this.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0976998122?ie=UTF8&tag=yesjacorpo-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0976998122

It will fuck you over in the end though, enjoy.
>>
>>142233958
Why? So that the lazy beginners won't need to get off their asses?
Waiting to learn the syllabic alphabet serves literally no purpose except comforting to a stupid mindset that gets you nowhere.
You'll eventually have to learn it or give up from the beginning and stop wasting time.

Do you need to practise reading an alphabet you grew up with or do you need to practice an alphabet you haven't read before but want to read comfortably in the least amount of time (to actually be able to read native stuff)?

I'm so fucking stupid /djt/, I fucked up big time and now have to put twice the effort into my studies this week at least.

I was using the anki deck from the start up guide (2k6k) until around 600 cards, then added the yotsubato deck so I can start reading soon and learned both.
Someday I decided to only review the 2k6k vocab deck and concentrate on learning more cards from the yostubato deck.

Well and now after 3 weeks I noticed that I don't fucking remember half the cards from the yotsubato deck and that my reviews are kinda low.

I don't know if this is really that relevant but, does anyone else feel far too content with their life because of Japanese?

I'm a neet at the moment, and I know I should be getting a job and doing all that disgusting normie shit, but I just feel so content spending all my time learning Japanese, I have absolutely no drive to go out and be a part of society, or even to spend time with friends on weekends, because I'd just much rather be at home reading

NEETs often start to get disgusted with themselves since they do nothing, but learning Japanese kind of feels like doing something meaningful, it requires a lot of effort and it's also rewarding, so it can fill the void of not having a job. At least this is how it feels.

I can understand your feelings, learning Japanese consumes a lot of your time and you can learn faster by putting more time and effort into it, to the point that there is not much time left for other things.

I have a job, go to the gym every 2 days and do my anki reps, that barely leaves me any time for other things, this includes reading my grammar books I bought.
Fuck.

Thought about going to work by bike and stop going to gym to save time.

I kinda feel good for doing something productive now though, I kinda don't have the time to get depressive anymore, I'm always busy with other shit.

Symptoms of someone who isn't already bilingual. Bilinguals know that phonetic utterances are only placeholders for concepts so they put more weight on learning reading. Having only one lexicon makes you give too much importance in the link between sense and reference.

Look up the "sense and reference" page on wiki, maybe it will help in clearing this misguided way in which monolinguals think.

Ritalin is the safest effective stimulant for people who do not need it. It has the lowest half-life and you develop a tolerance to its euphoria faster than adderall, crystal meth, and ecstacy's. Ritalin's half-life is much shorter than other amphetamine-family stimulants, which means that you can use the downtime between dosages for eating and vegging, contrary to its high effects which include loss of appetite and difficulty meditating.

I wonder how they can say that a still running anime is a great adaption. At least wait until it's over.
I think it depends on what version you read. I've read a little bit of the VN and am reading the WN at the moment and it's pretty obvious that it was written by an amateur but it is still very entertaining (if you like what you've already seen in the anime, they follow it closely until now but have to cut a lot thoughts out of course). You're better off asking the faggots in the threads who've read more than me and probably know more about the differences between WN/VN. I just saw an OP once, I don't follow the threads.

I managed to get the 2nd one to run using compatibility mode, but is there any way to fix the first one? I think usually the problem is caused by installing without having your region set to Japan, but since there is no installation, I can't think of a way to fix it.

If you are having trouble finding a torrent for a VN, try searching for the name of the company that made it. Sometimes there will be a torrent with all the VNs from one company.

Importance of adding writing to your learning schedule is a hotly debated topic on /djt/. The most common conclusion seems to be that learning writing is useful if you are the type of learner that remembers through action or if you plan on handwriting things yourself (as in planning to live in Japan)
Different methods work for different people. I suggest giving it a try to see if you're one of those people. Neither learning with writing nor ignoring writing is widespread enough to be considered the norm.

I think the only solution is to track down an ISO in that situation. I was lucky I could find another torrent, most of the time you are lucky to even find one.

I think all of the text is encoded wrong, so I don't think that is the problem. My 2nd download works fine after switching to compatibility mode and has the correct text.

Basically, hitting 0.25 % 21 times in a row is different from hitting 0.25 % 21 out of 30 times, but anon doesn't need 70 % so that's irrelevant I guess.

I don't know how to do a proper calculation with the varying points per question either, but ignoring the kanji questions we've got 85 points you can get out of multiple choice questions, so unless you're unlucky as heck picking randomly alone should give you like 21 points for free. If you know the answers to just 5 questions and pick the rest randomly you're looking at a decent 50 % ish chance on getting those 30 points I think?
>>
>>142249766
Your math is completely wrong, you just calculated the chances of giving 21 good answers in a row, completely ignoring the total number of questions (ie. your math assumes that there are 21 questions and you need to get 100% on them).

Can you add exceptions to note types to the "Add Note ID" add-on?

I have that Anki add-on and the "Image Occlusion 2 Enhanced" add-on, but they conflict, because the former works by adding an ID to the first field and the latter says that you shouldn't add or reposition ANY field.

Nevermind. The add-ons actually don't have to conflict, if you simply don't add a Note ID field to the IO2E add-on (and thereby don't use the add-on for the note type), because the Note ID add-on only adds an ID to a field that is actually named "Note ID", not simply to any first field.

I'm from the UK and we're 'taught' either German or French in school. Nobody learns anything more than a handful of words and how to say basic things like "oi, where's the bog, m8?" ("entschuldigen sie, wo ist die toilette, mein kamerad?") though.

Most of those are truly worthless unless you plan to move to that other small European country.
Being European ESL, I started learning English in 4th grade elementary school and learned it throughout middle school, that many years at least gets you to a decent level. I also had to pick a second language at the start of middle school (9th grade). I could pick between German, French and Italian. I picked Italian studied it for 4 years, and now I remember less than 50 words and maybe one conjugation rule.

Unless you plan to use it daily and keep practicing it, you will be stuck on beginner level on all those other languages. I also know about 100 very basic words in German. I never studied that language but I picked up those from exposure, yet I can't communicate in German at all, besides saying a couple of set phrases like "Guten tag".

It's not like most people here know 4-5 languages naturally. I consider Japanese my third language, since besides English that's the only foreign language I can actually construct a sentence in.

Hey guys,
I just started in my attempt at learning at least basic Japanese in order to have a little understanding of the language. Enough to make out a few sentences on Jap websites at least. Anyways, I'm following the guide in the OP step by step and I'm doing what is suggested and first learning Hiragana before anything else. I've bought this handy looking app called "Learn Hiragana & Katakana with Dr. Moku". Basically it has a reference sheet for each character with helpful ways of remembering each one. For example, one page of the sheet will have a character and then highlight a part of it that resembles a fish and somehow relates the sound of that character to a fish. It also has an option to see the correct way to stroke each character when drawing it.
After initially reviewing each character one by one I started using the "Quiz" function of the app. It's a simple multiple choice quiz of 10 randomly selected characters each time. You are graded with x/10 after completion. I've been writing down my quiz score for each time I take it as well as the characters I missed. After each Quiz I review the characters I missed and try again.

Is this a good method to successfully learning the system in a sufficient amount of time? Anything I should do to improve my way of learning?
>>
>>142255431
Does stroke order matter there? I intended to skip writing but realized I probably won't be able to use a dictionary to read raws if I can't even tell the number of strokes from a kanji

Just my guess.

Handwriting is easier if you only need to look up a few words. It also has a higher success chance than OCR.
I guess kanjitomo would be better for a beginner.

I've started using Real Kana and it's showing better results. I'm testing myself with 1 column at a time until I feel comfortable enough for the next one. Is the trick to just keep testing until it finally gets stuck in my head or is there something I'm missing? I find myself not remember a character only 10 seconds after the last time missing it.

Grind to shit for a considerable number of hours and you'll be done within a day.
>>
>>142257839
Grind your own way at your own pace
Me, I did 2 columns at a time for 50 answers, removed the older column while adding a new one and grinded for 50 more answers
Once I've finished, 4 columns at a time for 100 answers then swap all 4
Then all of it for 200 answers
Doing it like that I only got 2% wrong, then moved on to katakana and got the same results

Never change, writingfriends.

You seem to misunderstand why most people use kanjitomo, pointing with a mouse is faster than absolutely anything else that can be used for looking shit up, even if you already know every kanji in a word. People use it to spend less time with dictionary and more time reading fun shit.

Kanjitomo is very good, not sure what these guys are smoking.
Admittedly it is only good at recognizing certain fonts and only black text on white background. Fortunately, that's what most manga and LN are written with.
