Before it aired Osomatsu-san was pretty far under the radar. I dunno about "thought would fail" but I'm sure no one imagined how outrageously well it'd do.

They liked it from the very start, literally the first episode was directed specifically at a female audience (it's a fucking utapri parody for the most part) and all the marketing prior to broadcast was aimed at women.

2nd cour upped the pandering but that's because it was already insanely popular and they probably wanted to keep the momentum.
