So why is it that everyone says the enemy could attack earth at basically any day, yet in order for the enemy to get to earth, they'd be going so fast that months will have passed before they actually arrived at earth? Noriko and Amano have to go near the speed of light, causing a fuck load of time to pass in mere minutes, but does the same not apply to the aliens?

Am I misunderstanding the concept of time dilation or is it the anime that's wrong?
>>
The anime was very wrong. But in the anime the reason why so much time passes on the last episode is because something something the gravity of the black hole. Also it could also be assumed that the aliens generally had better technology, but were just lacking in guts.
>>
>>142177201

The anime was full of problems. The ending that everyone loved so much can easily be destroyed when you realize that the people of Earth had no way to know exactly when she went into light speed. And just a couple seconds of miscalculation could be the difference of years in Earth time. Meaning all those people who stood outside to leave her a visible message would have had to stand there for 10-100 years in reality.
>>
>>142177439
Then again 12,000 years worth of calculation's can get it right.
>>
>>142177439
There's a difference between getting the science wrong and ignoring it for the sake of expressing an emotional moment in a story, you pedantic fuck.
>>
I thought the enemies could warp? I haven't watched this in years so maybe I'm thinking of Diebuster
>>
>>142177201
I'm pretty sure they can just warp to earth, and they have no way of detecting warps ahead of time. The problem for the aliens is that they don't know where the earth is, supposedly.
>>
Man, Gunbuster has a quality where, as I'm watching it, I feel like "This is the greatest story humanity's ever told!"
>>
>>142177702

>and ignoring it for the sake of expressing an emotional moment in a story
The problem is the entire point rests on a scientific plot point. They could have gotten the exact same emotional result without relying on said scientific trigger. But Anno wanted to focus on that.

The small details is the difference between good storytelling and great storytelling.

The small details -are- the difference between good storytelling and great storytelling. And like that anon said, humanity had 12000 years to get the timing calculations right, or more likely, they simply had a satellite set to detect the Gunbuster pod as it neared the solar system, to let them plan the light show. And the aliens could very well have set out to attack millennia ago at the Genesis of mankind, and be just showing up within range now, in modern times.
>>
>>142179024

>And like that anon said, humanity had 12000 years to get the timing calculations right
They still had no way of knowing when she left to start the calculations.

>or more likely, they simply had a satellite set to detect the Gunbuster pod as it neared the solar system
That would be very plausible. Problem is, they didn't actually say that in the OAV. So once again, a key detail was left out.
>>
>>142179194
But the thing is that if you were to put that random ass explanation into the scene, it would have dampened the emotion of the scene. They had no reason to include it there because it has no reason to be questioned by either character, they're just happy enough to see that humanity isn't dead, they're not gonna be like "oh cool but how did they DO that??"

To me, it was just a simple matter of sacrificing that tiny little explanation for the sake of keeping the tone of the scene consistent. It's 12,000 years in the future, we're just supposed to infer that it can be done somehow, and enjoy the ending for what it is.
>>
>>142177439
They don't need to know when it left, they just have to detect it coming in.
>>
The greatest thing about Gunbuster is that it led to Gurren Lagann

>>or more likely, they simply had a satellite set to detect the Gunbuster pod as it neared the solar system
>That would be very plausible. Problem is, they didn't actually say that in the OAV. So once again, a key detail was left out.

They don't need to have an explanation because every single human being on the planet that isn't a literal autist could infer that that's probably what they did
>>
>>142177439
it's the future dude, they can send a hologram onto the atmosphere or some shit, batman can do it can't he jesus
>>
>>142180172

90% of people didn't even understand the basics of space/time they explained in the OAV. They would have needed to explain a lot more than they already did. Let alone how most people watching media don't think for themselves.
>>
STMC doesn't know where earth is. Otherwise they would have destroyed it no problem.

Humans didn't attract the STMC's attention until they started exploring deep space.
>>
>>142177201
Hey man, you can't criticize Gunbuster, haven't you noticed how perfect it is in every way? Everyone else has.
>>
>>142180281
So 90% of people don't need an explanation.
Most of the remaining 10% are mindless sheeple who don't think for themselves and so have no problem working out that a space faring civilization wouldn't have a problem detecting an approaching object without having to calculate when it'll arrive using it's starting position.
>>
>>142180917

>So 90% of people don't need an explanation.
Just the opposite.
>>
>>142177201
Gunbuster was complete shit, would've been better stretched out like NGE.
And the ending was horrible.
>>
>>142181078
Here's your (you)

>Let alone how most people watching media don't think for themselves.
That's a good thing. If you "think for yourself" too much, you're just bringing in external knowledge that the creators probably don't want introduced, and that fucks things up. Accepting what you're told is the key to enjoying media more.
>>
>Gunbuster is great if you just turn your brain off and ignore the plot holes
Sounds like the Gunbuster/GAINAX fanbase alright.
>>
Is the Time Dilation wrong because of the new understanding as Gunbuster is quite dated in terms of sci-fi or just outright wrong?
>>
>>142184169
No, time dilation is actually pretty well understood since as far back as the 1910s1-1920s when Einstein-sama's theory of relavitity was published, but most people still get it wrong.
>>
>>142184310
Sorry, I meant did Gunbuster, portray this correctly?
>>
>>142180083
Exactly, you know it's going to arrive at some point. You just have constant scans going on.
>>
>>142177201
But wouldn't that just mean the oliams decided to attack months prior?
It's been a few years, but did they ever actually detect anything in FTL beside the fucked up ship Nonononoriko's papa commanded?
>>
>>142177201
You missed warp.

Traveling through warp isn't affected by normal physics, aka the speed of light.

It's the entire reason why Amano catches up to Noriko in Gunbuster 3 instantly even though Noriko has been traveling for more than a decade Earth time,
Noriko and co were traveling outside of warp a lot of the time in those years while Amano warped right to them.

When will you stupid humans ever learn?
>>
>>142179194
>Problem is, they didn't actually say that in the OAV.
Funny, I seem to recall them saying they detected it in Diebuster. That they confirmed it had entered the solar system.

Mind you, seeing ships were present at the exact time they shoved the engine into the Black Hole Bomb and activated it, they knew exactly when it activated and would have been able to make a pretty good calculation of their acceleration.

Fuck, we could probably calculate it now, with the data that they had and the computing power we have. And they had thousands of years to refine it down to a probable return window.
>>
Just watch Ace wo Nerae instead.
Ochoufuujin is best onee-sama
Munakata is best coach
Hiromi is better than Noriko in every way.

Tennis is way more interesting than autistic robot battles too

ka ka-chan is cute :3
>>
>>142177201
The aliens are the size of planets. Time for them moves differently compared to something as small as gunbuster or excellion.
>>
>>142177740
The pinnacle of buster evolution is getting to the level of the space monsters themselves. Since Nono had warp, the space aliens could've had one too.
>>
>>142177855
One of them got close though. One was found on a moon near Saturn. But then again that was in Diebuster, so they could've just asspulled/retconned stuff that was in Gunbuster.
>>
>>142179194
>a key detail is left out

It's actually not. There used to be room in narrative construction that authors could use to make people wonder and question, and keep a discussion going. This used to be associated with master-craft authorial skills.

Now, fucking hyper-autists who are convinced they know the world better than experts because of some google searches and 100 level college classes cry out, "half-assed!" and that's just supposed to be the end of it.
>>
>>142177439
Someone hasn't watched Diebuster.
