I mainly enjoyed SAO actually for the choreography actually. I mean it wasn't Sword of the Stranger or Seirei no Moribito by any stretch, but unlike most LN -> anime adaptations including Raildex, there was comparatively little talking during the action, especially mid-fighting.
I mean yeah there's times when both sides stop and talk, but it was less common and more importantly I don't ever recall S1-2 ever having Kirito and friends fucking yammering WHILE swinging their swords and shooting their guns ya know?
That's kinda something that happens in pretty much 80% of all battle anime. You have two guys slashing away at each other and yelling out their ideals or cursing KISAMA and last but definitely not least, calling out fucking long ass names for special moves and spells.
There was none of that. It was just sword swinging and gun shooting. Spell casting was in the back line and properly protected and all that jazz ya know? No one fucking did the equivalent of sperging out a paragraph on vent during a fucking 0.5 GCD attack.
I thought that was sadly, very progressive in terms of anime fighting, especially because it was a generic series. It was like well if SAO can do it, maybe these LN adaptations in the future or manga adaptations in the future can do it too?

Sorry, old habit slang.Goblins were aggressive and linked (aggressive would agro if they detected you, linking meant they would agro if they detected a friendly mob that had hate on somebody.) so sometimes people would get agro by one and end up with 3 or 4 while trying to run to zone. Just a bit of bad luck and a zone where people level 10-18 got experience at would have multiple aggressive goblins waiting right next to a zone line. It would be flatout impossible for people levelling there to clean up the mess so some higher-level players would hang out and clean the mess up if it happened.

First thing I thought was it was going to be about helmet MC going around killing goblins and thats the story. Just him, and killing gobs. No he doesn't get a harem. No he never takes off the helmet. All he does all day is kill goblins and get paid.
The first chapter was just him happening to save some rookie adventurer who almost died from gobs and she follows him around because she's afraid of gobs now and thinks he's hot shit for killing them. She spends every chapter hoping she'll be useful for once and save his ass with healing.
But it doesn't happen.
He's been doing this for like ten years.
He's been injured before, but he learned from it.
Which is why he never takes off the helmet except to eat which he does in the Inn.
So the whole manga is just the healer trying to save him and never getting that chance.
Eventually, she just straight out trys to sabotage him so she can heal him and get on with her life.
That day, she was just another goblin to him.

Goblins always seem to have just been around forever and haunt the countryside being dicks for no reason. They are like bears or some shit. I think its odd how all these adventurer guilds exist and trade routes and basically no one has the manpower to clear out these hordes of monsters just hanging around despite most adventurers being able to consistently slaughter them for profit.

In 2e at least, a swarm of goblins could easily result in a total party wipe.
Here, the mage and priest get blindsided, the mage uses her single target spell to one shot a guy, and then she gets fucked.
The fighter then attacks multiple goblins at once with no support. She gets fucked.
One grapple check loss (which can easily happen even on DC 5 or some shit) and monk-chan goes down.
Combat is risky at low levels and the guild lady warned them. Comparing this to a domineering DM's style of campaign is unfair. I enjoyed this realistic portrayal of combat. It's like Grimgar.Although from what other /a/non's have said this turns to shit.

Yes. Tiny (+2 AC) Dex 18 (+4 AC) is the equivalent of scale mail armor. COmmoners basically need to roll 16+ on a d20 to hit a cat.
More importantly, cats' high Dex means they will most likely hit first, and even with their feeble strength, their claws are guaranteed an absolute minimum of 1 HP, while an average commoner has 2.5 HP.
So 2 flanking cats have a good chance (+4 Dex from weapon finesse, +2 flanking +2 size vs AC 10 means they hit on a 2 or higher; and since natural 1s automiss anyway, they hit any time they don't roll a 1) of being able to hit a human bean and do enough damage to incapacitate him.

I'd probably recommend 4e if you're just starting out now, but 3.5e/Pathfinder might be a better start if you can get some major help understanding how things work. Please don't. AD&D 2E is the best edition overall. No caster supremacy and the best lore out of all of them. 5E isn't bad either, but it is sparse as far as content goes and caster supremacy very much makes a come back, but not as severely.

I really don't want to start edition wars on /a/, but you can't honestly tell me that 3.5 "I make a full attack action" martials are less samey than their 4e counterparts.
If you're talk about classes having similar mechanics, it's a significantly good thing that wizards and fighters are playing the same game, not two entirely different systems cludged together haphazardly.
4e has flaws, but it's far more interesting, combat-wise, than its 3.5 predecessor.

Yeah, I only said he might try out 3.5e since that's what most of my friends want to play. I've personally only played that and 4e for D&D, so that's all I can comment on. I like 3.5e even if it's kind of complicated with all of the options you have, but that is also one of its strong points. People talking about how brutal the older editions are makes me want to try them out, though. I just don't think I'd be able to get my usual people to join me ironically for the very same reason.

I'm sure it was done before that but I didn't notice. A lot of the series/WN/LNs seem to start off with DARKNESS then go right back to the usual.
I liked grimgar for sticking to the whole drama focus coming of age feelings thing. It was kind of like Orange County with fantasy and that didn't bother me. I really wish there were more dark fantasy stories that didn't rely on the usual harem antics.

I liked SAO before I read on /a/ that I was supposed to hate it. That power of love bullshit resurrection was the point where I was genuinely upset but I still enjoyed the show.
I've been on /a/ long enough to know how this goes though. Grimgar will be lauded as a secret classic because it had cool backgrounds and no one will ever mention actually good fantasy shows like Those Who Strip Elves because all the anons who gave a shit about it have long become full time lurkers.

And be boggled at how to make your character at first level.
But realize with practice you could literally make any character concept.
Then wonder in amazement at it's superb monster creation rules, and realize you could craft magic items with the same rules.
Apply same insights to the world's setting, and realize wizards sometimes turn people into paraplegic gibbering masses of flesh for Zeon batteries, and magic users and summonser really are a menace in the world and deserve to be hunted down like the witches they are!

I'd recommend GURPS but only if they can find a GM for their first couple of games. It's a simple enough system but without a sample scenario or campaign they would probably be dissuaded by how much frontloading the system needs.
That being said GURPS Dungeon Fantasy is amazing. Good for anyone who wants to scratch the D&D itch on a more streamlined system.

And personal experience with the game has been too positive for me to discount it's Rolemastery like system.
Fighting undead and the Slayer that brought them in a beginner party to our very literal last breath was too good.
The Fatigue system is great. Fight all night, risk spending points of fatigue to get a bit of an edge on your enemies. The fight drags on, and the Slayer has already KO'd many of your party members, until you're the last one, and just use every last bit of Fatigue on your last attack, kill the bastard, then drop unconscious from all the exertion.
