A main theme that has been played constantly throughout Freyja's development is singing, and how she feels about it, and why she is singing. It's evident she loves singing, so why would she limit herself to Hayate. Freyja is beyond Hayate! Singing makes her rune sparkle incredible powerful.

Just because she doesn't end up with some guy, doesn't mean she is going to be unhappy. Freyja doesn't need some guy to make her happy, when she has her songs. It might sound weird, the concept of loving a dream more than an actual person but its actually not weird or uncommon at all. Minmay loved her songs, Isamu loved singing, throughout various animes, movies or even in real life we see people choose their dreams over an actual person because their dreams are more important to them and makes them happier than that person could.

There is the opposite though of people giving up their dreams because they love someone more than that dream, but I doubt that would be the case with Freyja.

It's not a rule, and she can in fact do both. People are saying that if one person loses the in the love triangle, that equates to them having a sad ending. I can't speak on Mirages behalf since we don't know much about her, but in Freyja's case my point was that if she was the one who lost in the love triangle her ending wouldn't be sad if they decide to go with the route that she loves singing more.

She can very well love both and be the winner, but if she didn't it wouldn't be a sad ending because she loves singing and was able to become apart of group that allowed her to sing, and eventually save her people from war. Instead of marrying quickly she was able to feel like a young girl again, she went on many adventures, made many friends etc. At the end of the day, a boy is just a boy, she will move on if she lost, because all those amazing things she achieved was worth it, and i'm sure she would do it all again. She wouldn't take back the experience at all.

It all comes down to an individuals interpretation of love. If someone believes happiness comes fro being with somebody else, then the end of the love triangle will be sad for them, because somebody has to end up alone. But if you believe love much more complicated than being with someone, and stems from things that make you happy etc then the ending will be bittersweet and leave you wondering how each party are and wanting to see how they are doing. Which is what I believe Kawamori is going for.

Okay, in all serious I understand the dislike with opening endings and I am not a fan of them either. However, the situation has to be analyzed from various perspectives, and the one that solidifies why their is a great chance of there being an open ending, is marketing and sales.

Anime has been a very rough business the past few years, and while the staff wants to entertain it's audience, the end goal of every anime production is of course revenue. When it comes to shipping, fans can go from 0 - 100 very drastically. Let's also keep in mind that Delta's goal is also to create two movies. For us the audience that means high quality of everything we love, and for the staff more money to fund their hard work. With that in mind, lets also keep in mind that shipping wars makes or breaks sales.

While there is a large percent of Freyja shippers, nobody can deny that significant amount of Mirage shippers also. This is where the problem starts. For example a previous poster in this very thread stated the following:

Most fans operate the same way this one does. Not everyone is able to truly appreciate a story for what it is regarless of shipping like this gentleman, who stated the following:

Remake movie, and then a second movie with new things and a proper ending. Just like frontier. That way they will not fear losing money, and giving fans what they want. It's all about marketing!

SDF was low budget, and creators were surprised at its success. Thanks to the success of SDF, the franchise has a solid fanbase. Frontier and especially Delta are designed with being successful in mind. Which is why it has leaked/expected that there will be two movies after the series ends.
