To be honest, I think Hisoka needs to be taken down a peg so it wouldn't diminish the fight at all for me if the odds were stacked against him. He's hyper confident and arrogant, he spends all his time judging whether other people deserve to live so he can fight them or die because they're not strong enough to be worth his time. It seems clear that he was intentionally letting Hisoka build preconceptions about his plan, then acting in a way that matched those projected preconceptions, and it worked out in his favour by allowing him to get the upper hand through surprise. I was pretty skeptical of the explanation myself, but I think it makes sense strategically now.
