Sorta, from what I understand there are ways to stimulate it making it easier to make more complex patterns. The original style was caused by having shit metal and even worse forges. So it was basically various chunks of iron with different carbon qualities being mashed together to make a slightly more hard solid piece. So you can do that today, but unless you dug some crap iron out of your back yard and hand built your kiln it will actually be of better overall quality than what they had back then. It's really cool visually but counterproductive if you are aiming for maximum quality steel. The most practical form of it is actually Japanese sword making because they separated their fragments of metal and choose their location in the blade to maximize strength instead of just mashing it all together.

In the end his goal is to fund and habitate Vinland, which is supposed to be peaceful without killing. And also to break through the hell of killing and getting killed for the sake of fighting (supposedly Valhalla). Therefore committing to violence is his last resort and that's why he's so reluctant to use it.

Welcome to eastern character design in general. With the exception of anomalies like Tomonori Kogawa (who I honestly wish did manga himself), it seems most anime/manga designers can't into drawing certain proportions right or have the ability break out of at like 7 designs (when not concerning monsters and shit). That's why I generally prefer western designers in those aspects, even with the latest CalArts trends n' crap.

Not really. I can recall plenty of western artists that have better variety and sense of proportion than like, 97% of Japanese artists. Herge and Glen Keane among them.

Monthly farm arc installments chased many away. There were A LOT of "metaphor for lesson learned!" chapters mixed with "suffering dark past". They aren't bad, but it got arguably redundant at after a point. Reading the series now, in bulk, probably alieviated any pacing issues or plot slowdowns.

Japanese seems to prefer stylized proportion rather than realistic proportions like the Westerns do. If you look up on some of their artbooks you can see that they can do normal/realistic proportions just fine.
