The minimum bar for improvement I'd say would be keeping pace with Ichigo, defending and healing and showing some kind of synergy. Which is more or less where we are now. How Orihime reacts to Ichigo not cooperating seems like the first obstacle. Whether she can do something to snap him out of it or if someone else (Rukia, Isshin) will have to do that would be a significant development.

As far as high end expectations go I guess doing something to nullify Ywach's powers or maybe landing an offensive hit on him for once. Or anything that gets him to acknowledge her existence as more than "that woman".

This is the biggest thing for me. Ichigo is obviously not in the best state of mind. Orihime has tried once already to get him to wait, but he blew right past her.
It's going to be interesting to see who gets Ichigo out of this mindset. Will Orihime finally be able to connect with Ichigo? Or will it be left to the same old characters?

Whatever the case, I hope we still stick with the Ichigo / Yhwach fight for next chapter.

ALL quincies exist for the purpose of gaining strength, dying, and returning to Ywach.
what Ywach was waiting for was a quincy that would be born with shinigami powers (royal shinigami at that) because quincies are inherently weak. They rely on the reishi around them. It's the environment that makes them so much more powerful. A shinigami, especially one with a hollow element to him, is a whole slew of power that is otherwise unobtainable by quincies.
Rather than inventing something like the hou gyoku and experimenting constantly in order to gain a perfect 3-way hybrid, (which a proper 2 way hybrid took aizen a couple hundred years, and that's only because Urahara was ALSO working on it) Ywach just foresaw that it would happen on it's own. So he waited. Since he couldn't do much anyways for 1000 years.

I think I know why Yhwach wants Ichigo. If Ichigo has the king's power then he is the only one who has a perfect set.
Think about it. Yhwach leaks powers and abilities everywhere to the point that he'd lose all abilities and become a blind, deaf and numb undying corpse if he didn't keep on absorbing abilities. Jugo has the power, but his is so weak that he can't even use it properly. That only leaves Ichigo, the only one who grants and absorbs power and doesn't suffer from any of the drawbacks.

It has offensive capabilities, though, like restructuring his own arm in order to gain brute force, or messing with the enemy a la Buccelatti's Sticky Fingers. I agree that it is not a trump card (his trump cards are always his schemes), but the way it was presented made it seem like one (Urahara's saying "Don't tell me that I didn't warn you..." and such). Perhaps it is a means to get one of his plans going, but in itself it is a very powerful bankai.

Exactly. Pure speculation. I'd say he is as strong as Isshin and pre-Hogyoku Aizen because of his fights, but his best asset is his intelligence and ingenuity. He has both the brains and the brawn, but more of the former than the latter.

I agree, it was the only ability that could more or less destroy Aizen the Magical Butterfly, but as with Urahara, it was Gin's deception that gave him a near victory.

What I'm trying to say here is that Gin's and Urahara's bankais are both quite powerful in themselves, but they are ever more devastating in the hands of its users. Take Kenpachi's bankai, for example. It is one of the most powerful bankai we have seen, but Kenpachi doesn't need to be a sneaky bastard to use it. The same with Ichigo.

Yamamoto's shikai is just hot sword coming through, there's nothing particularly powerful about it. You could give the old man a plank of wood and he'd be just as effective, give that sword to someone else and they wouldn't gain a huge advantage.

Sticky Fingers is a nice comparison, they are quite similar. Urahara didn't really fuck with Askin aside from the arm thing though, when he could've (presumably) restructured his entire body when he was within his range.
