I don't believe the "Mirage is just a secondary character" thing because otherwise they wouldn't have bothered putting all three of them in a group together and cutting them off from the rest in the last episode. I'm technically a Freyjafag but I don't particularly care that much about shippingwars. If anything this is just bad writing. Right now we know that Mirage is important more through meta than from the actual show.

As of now, I'd say the three main characters are Frejya, Mikumo and Hayate, in that order.

Frejya has the most plot relevance right now, being the talented rookie with the potential to change the course of the story and having to fight against her own people who see her as a traitor (a subplot that will take the forefront next episode, no doubt).

Mikumo carries the whole mystery part of show pretty much on her own. At first I thought she would be just a mentor character, but it turned out she's a lot more than that. With her ability to feel things no even Frejya can feel and all this talk about the true heir of the Protoculture, she might end up being that heir herself or something pretty close to it.

Hayate is the least relevant of the three right now, but he has the ability to feel the wind thanks to his fold crystal. No doubt this will be his ticked to become more important going forward.

Mirage right now is about as relevant as Messer. The guy has his rivalry with Kieth and his health problems to deal with. Mirage is Hayate's bro and has her own struggle to live up to her family name. None of this subplots are relevant to the main plot, however.

Mind, all this is subject to change going forwards. We'll just have to wait and see.
