What Pre 2000 anime are you watching?
What do you want to get a BD?
>>
>>141688775
I'm watching that right now, anon. Only 4 episodes in yet, still meeting the cast, but it's very entertaining so far.
>>
Chacha is great, but only the episodes Yakko-chan is in.
>>
>>141689468
My man of fine taste.
>>
My middle school friend was pretty obsessed with Chacha. I only had interest enough to watch the OVA.
>>
>>141689629
It's a pretty cozy show to just have playing the background, although the attempts at longer fantasy story arcs are less entertaining.
>>
>>141689881
Well the plot ends about 3/4 into the show and the rest is comfy filler. It's my favorite kids show if you want to call it that.
>>
About to start watching Cardcaptor Sakura for the first time, I just finished downloading it.
>>
>>141690078
Did you get that fuck huge coalgirls release?
>>
>>141689329
Chacha was great at being a damedame little girl comedy in a fantasy setting, but the magical girl stuff they threw in to compete with Sailor Moon was rubbish.
>>141689468
Yakko and Marine were a great "team".
>>
>>141690207
Yeah
>>
Marinechan
>>
Not as good as I thought it would be. Also didn't expect the gay sex.
>>
>>141688775
I'd love to get a nice Hokuto no Ken BD.

Anyway, recently downloaded Arion and The Five Star Stories and the Escaflowne movie, are they any good?
>>
I'm watching Sailor moon super s at the moment.
It's not as bad as people are making it out to be.
>>
I'm rewatching You're Under Arrest because I never finished it back in the day. I'm enjoying it way more than I did as a teenager. Every episode has some kind of passive joke that a kid wouldn't get.

Its also good because it basically has a Belldandy clone, but she has an actual personality.
>>
>>141688775
Zeta Gundam, it's actually pretty good.

This is really making me want to rewatch the show but really, the school antics/filler episodes are the most entertaining part of it.

Great show overall though.

I also could have written a series of novels. But instead I waste my time here.
>>
When will these threads upgrade to pre-2005? I'm not watching any pre-2000 anime at the moment.

My likely next anime from this time period is probably Nadia, because I've been wanting to watch it for a while.

Another possibility is Brain Powerd, but not sure yet.

I have started watching Rose of Versailles, but haven't put any effort into it in a while.

I am also thinking more and more about Patlabor. Someone said it was a nice SoL-ish anime or something, and that sounds good. It's also really popular.
>>
>>141694405
You really should have picked up enough conversational japanese from anime to get by in that time though.

I've seen these threads with "pre-2001" so they include stuff like FLCL and the Cowboy Bebop movie.

I can understand about half of what is said in a typical anime series. Enough to tell when a translation is making shit up. But still not enough to watch something completely without subs. Unless its something really easy like Hanamaru Youchien or CardCaptor Sakura.

And since this is a pre 2000 anime thread, might as well post it.

I think the most logical cut off would be 2004. Since 2004-2006 was the time when dubs started to drop off and online subbing became dominant. Basically, after 2004, the vast majority of anime fans in the west were watching subs online out of necessity. But back in 1998 or so was right when the Toonami/Dub fad began.

Also because some shows like Princess Tutu, Pita Ten, Gate Keepers or Azumanga Daioh seem to get lost in the mix. They're not old enough to be pre 2000, but not digital and 'new' enough.
>>

>Also because some shows like Princess Tutu, Pita Ten, Gate Keepers or Azumanga Daioh seem to get lost in the mix. They're not old enough to be pre 2000, but not digital and 'new' enough.

I mean, we're making an arbitrary divide no matter which year we choose, so I don't think that's that big a deal.
>>
>>141694946
>Pita Ten

Ah, I remember you.
>>
>>141694946
I don't think dubs are what to look at. Digital is one suggestion, another could be widescreen format.

Princess tutu at least gets discussion though, and Azumanga Daioh. But that time period had so much good anime it may be able to sustain a thread my itself. 2000-Haruhi for example.

The anime is basically 2/3 the manga. But ends abruptly.

The reason you should watch the anime is for the hilarious voice actors. And some of the jokes work much better with the quick cuts and exaggerated animation style.

>The storylines of the manga and the anime adaptation are markedly different: while the anime uses most of the same characters, the story of the first two seasons were invented for the television show. Most of the stories in the third season are based on the manga.

But now that I read the wiki page I'm a little worried that I might be better off just reading the manga before it "turns dark."

There was no "dub fad." Dubs have always dominated and continue to dominate the Western anime market, at least in America.

The magical girl stuff in Sailor Moon was rubbish and that would have been a far better show were it not held back by that.

Yes, you absolutely are. The manga is massively better than any other adaptation of it, and I say this as someone who typically despises most manga elitism.

Pita Ten was pretty awesome, and the manga was sad, I loved it.

This is the fourth thinly veiled recommendation thread I've seen in the last 10 minutes.

I haven't been watching anything from before 2010 the past week or two. I've been catching up on tons of shit I just ignored for various reasons, regardless of quality.
>>
>>141698140

The majority of people even in America have switched to watching online subs. Simply because of necessity. They're free and way more prevalent. Why spend $60-$100 to buy a show when you can get it online for free? And watch it right when the show airs in Japan, not 2 years later.

For fuck sake, even my 12 year old cousin watches subbed anime online. And this is a kid who goes out and buys every major AAA game that comes out. Yet even he doesn't bother buying anime.

I see this a lot lately. The longer and slower the better as far as I'm concerned. Being able to digest a 50+ episode series ends up being a lot more memorable and fulfilling than rushing through tons of short mediocre series.
>>
I'd like to see BDs for:

all of Dirty Pair and Flash
all of Gal Force
all of Armored Trooper VOTOMS
Legend of Lemnear
Ruin Explorers
Gunsmith Cats
They Were 11
Birth
Area 88
Queen Millennia
Dallos
what's still available of Project A-ko
Neo Tokyo
Odin: Photon Sailer Starlight Mutiny
Robot Carnival
Iria:Zeiram
Armitage III
Silent Mobius
Genmu Senki Leda, and
Windaria

to name a slight few. The list is hundreds of entries long, there's just tons of stuff that needs BluRay to really shine. Some have already had remasters but are still only available on DVD. Remember how stunning Lodoss' transformation was, it could make a lot of these into something stupendous, especially Gal Force and Dirty Pair Project Eden.

Aside from episode 2 and 3, I don't see how it was paced bad. I also disagree with you about it not having a good ending. It had not one but two of the best endings in anime. The ending for both seasons were amazing.

I'm not really going to try and change your opinion. But the reason the second season ended the way it did was because of the source material (Swan Lake). And because ballets as a whole usually end with a bitter sweet ending.

But also, it being a shoujo and all, it was playing right to the female audience. "Fakia still loves Ahiru as a duck, its so touching." etc.
>>
>>141688775
Right now I'm making my way through the last stretch of Key the Metal Idol. I've only got the thirteenth episode and the two OVAs left.

It's been really interesting so far. First thing that came to mind was that Key was like a sort of prototype for Serial Experiments Lain, but that doesn't really seem to be a fair comparison for either series.

I did read the whole post

You should be able to discern a demographic easily with just surface level stuff such as promo images, year and number of episodes nine out of ten times. SMJ is clearly a late night anime just when you look at it's designs, release date and number of cours. Being aired on children's slots in third world shitholes in latin america does not change the original target demo

Furthermore, there is the implications that, should it be for children, then it is just shit. Big mistake
>>
>>141705003
I pretty much dropped everything I was watching to marathon the entire series.
while the later series aren't as strong as the first one they're still fun for the world building and watching them expand on the relationship.
Also the cat is pretty adorable

It was marketed to the same type of people as Slayers or Nadesico. Aka teenage men. And it was a heavily cleaned up version of a highly ecchi manga series.

>Furthermore, there is the implications that, should it be for children, then it is just shit. Big mistake
I never claimed that. Some of my favorite anime are shows aimed at kids like CardCaptor Sakura, Mitsudomoe, Pita Ten or Princess Tutu.

And you are the biggest idiot ever for assuming such a thing while also claiming SMJ was a 'late night anime'. As if you're trying to imply it was made for older audiences (Sienen). Because holy fuck, it wasn't.

You are a fucking idiot. And you better drop your trip soon or you'll become the laughing stock of /a/.

Otaku
It is a show for old tacos. The late night crowd. The ones who like highly ecchi shit? Who get off on cute girls? And awful jokes? And I know Megumi Hayashibara was really big in the 90s with EVERYONE, but she was also an otaku favorite. The people who would buy her CDs and merchandise and attend shows with her, teenagers don't have the kind of cash to do that shit

I stick by what I said, you have a bad eye. And if your eyes suck, just doing a minor skim will tell you that it is a series that spun off from an OVA. The OVA market wasn't exactly something held up and influenced by a horny teenager's chump change, no, it was the horny adult male's big fat bucks.

I wish series were longer instead of people making 13 episode series, fucking around for 9 of those episodes, and then trying to rush everything in 2 or maybe even 1 episode.

I guess it's a necessity in this day and age, but I really hate the cour system. Every anime with a cour over a year or two has always ended up changing during the second to try and market/pander to whatever was popular, and it usually never turns out right.

Should have clarified and said all anime before 95 looks like garbage to me, it starts to polish up to acceptable in 98 or 2000 and finally becomes palatable uniformly around 2004. While obviously there are anime that were ahead of their time and still looks great today (Jin Roh you sexy bitch) there were 100 anime to every outlier that stood the test of time. I almost cant even watch Neon Genesis because it looks so bad. If it wasnt for it being a literal masterpiece i would drop it after the first episode.

>I wish series were longer instead of people making 13 episode series, fucking around for 9 of those episodes, and then trying to rush everything in 2 or maybe even 1 episode.
Wanting longer series is fair, but the one that fuck around for nine episodes with a plot at the end aren't going to magically become dense, tightly told stories just because you give them more room - they'd just spend forty-five episodes on episodic stuff and MotW with some vague plot details every five episodes, and then have a concluding arc at the end. Basically the same shit. If someone stuffs the plot into the last two episodes, then the plot isn't a priority for them, and adding runtime won't change that.

Also,
>a cour over a year or two
What?
>>
>>141708999

>>
>>141709257

This pretty much. Anime in the 70s-90s actually had too much fluff. And it was rare for an anime to have every episode in a 26-48 episode span to its full effectiveness.

Now, does that mean 12-13 episodes is better? Not really. Some anime these days can't even use all 13 episodes fully. But I'm just pointing out, a show like Blue Seed or Nadesico, half the episodes were pretty pointless and almost a chore to get through. They would have done just fine as 13 episodes. While something like Hanamaru Youchien or Angelic Layer needed a second season to conclude the story, but never got it.

2004 is such an arbitrary point to pick. There are tons of garbage looking anime from that year, and more in every year after. There are just as many that suck today as there were in the 90's, it's just that we have a much greater pool to pick from.

When I was around 7 years old in 1995 I rented the live action VHS of the PG-13 film, The Guyver.

I loved the cheesy, humorous rubber monster suit battles.

Soon after I saw a cartoon version for rent and got my dad to rent it.

Fucking arms getting cut off, heads getting crushed, blood spraying, and body horror.

I was horrified, had nightmares for weeks.

Never got back into anime until after 2000.

Watch Guyver 2. It was written by people who had actually familiar with the source material.
And it stars a young Solid Snake.
It's not "good," but it's entertaining in a violent tokusatsu kind of way.

Different tone to it for sure. Post 2000 I was in my young teen edgelord days and got right into Bio-Boster Suit Guyver (or what ever the name exactly was) and rented all anime VHS. Drew Guyver art and shit.

I'm four episodes into Nadia right now, and for some reason it's not grabbing me as much as I thought it would.
Does it pick up any time soon? They just got on the ship, so it seems like it might speed up in pace soon.

Nadia herself is cute, but kinda bitchy. And these three are by far the best part.

The subplot about the princess and the prince drags Windaria down a bit. It would be a stronger movie if the focus was completely on the traitor dude.

I don't think you're too many episodes away from when the plot really gets going, it has some great episodes through that early middle part. Just be aware that the Island and Africa arcs are filler with a couple of plot relevant episodes thrown in the middle, and really not on the same level as the arcs before and after them.

The elusive bad guys' nationality is irrelevant compared to the colorfulness of the language used in the dub.

A massive alteration of a bad story isn't justified just because its bad. If anything, that just means it shouldn't have been localized in the first place. But of the limited Abh's that've been shown so far (Lafiel, the commander on the ship and the few crew members), they seem alright. I'm sure there are some asshole ones somewhere.

One thing I wasn't sure on:
Were the humans on Earth out there spacefaring and rocketing around before the Abhs showed up and forced their surrender, or did it happen afterward? It probably stated this but I don't remember.

Recently dropped this at about 50 episodes. The early 90s slapstick and delinquent hijinks get old really fast. Which is too bad since the first basketball game was probably around the 20 episode mark. The basketball itself is great only if it weren't constantly interrupted by the shittiest side characters to ever grace anime. Like the boy who writes down about every single thing happening in a match. Also the romance sub plot goes nowhere. Not even in the manga. Slam Dunk gradually went from a 9/10 to a 6/10 for me.

Only watched OVA and it's 10/10. It feels like a LotR ripoff, except it's probably based on D+D which I have no experience with. But ripoff in a good way. It's comfy. Really, I like that there's a bigger world and stuff is going on outside of what the main cast experiences. I also like that it doesn't spoonfeed the audience with a ton of flashbacks and explanations of shit, just expects us to get it. Very clean and swift like that.

Animation itself is gorgeous. And other than rage-kun there isn't a character I dislike. Really I'm just a sucker for adventure and high fantasy. Lodoss felt like a novel (inb4 it is) moreso than a cheap anime like modern shit.

Haven't watched the tv series yet. I probably will, but /a/ already warned me it's shit.

I want the novels but I am already backlogged on my reading. The translation project on them (Necromancer, thanks for rec /a/) is also slow.

If you watched 10+ episodes of 0079 and thought it didn't go anywhere you might not be cut out for long series. Not just with Gundam but in general. Have you tried 0080? One of the best entries in the franchise and six episodes long.
>>
>>141744594

I watched the movie version of 0079, as it was recommended by a friend. Then I tried Wing, SeeD and Turn A, which my friend also insisted I try. And couldn't stand any of them.

And long series is not a problem. I regularly watch 52-200 episode shows. Its just that these Gundam series didn't seem to do anything. They'd have tons of episodes that were just world building, but did nothing to develop the plot or characters. Then after 6-7 of these episodes, all the development would be crammed into a 2 minute fight scene of someone being pushed out of a plane or blown up by a missile.

>>

Mirai is pretty competent. Even if you see the women on the White Base screwing up, you don't have to look far to see the men doing just as bad. They're all a mess really.
>>
>>141745094
Amuro's first time with the Gundam was him bumbling around and only had more success because he's probably been picking up some info from his dad. Sayla was also pretty boss with the core fighter and slapped Kai since Bright is too busy slapping Amuro.
>>
How hard is it exactly to make a BD from an ond anime anyway? Shouldn't it cost less now that it's been done many times now? Should they use HDR for new BD transfers?
>>
>>141745094

Some writers just see women as useless. Only giving them supporting roles to a male lead or cute/comical roles. They might not even do it intentionally, but it still happens a lot in Gundam. Final Fantasy is a good example for video games. And of course, the countless Hollywood movies where a woman is little more than a walking scream machine.

>>141745528

When they are just upscaling a show, it takes no effort at all. But when they want to do a good job, what they have to do is find every cel and digitally process them, then make a new video one cel at a time. In effect, they are redoing the entire animation process, just without the drawing part. This is why many things don't get a digital remaster as there needs to be enough sold BDs to overtake the cost of making it. But also, because very few shows had their original cels at a big enough resolution (most cels were made with 480i in mind). This is my most digital remasters are reserved for movies or OAVs which have big enough source material to work with.

Tomino Gundam actually has quite a lot of competent female characters though. Emma was pretty much the few not insane person in Zeta though she does get balanced off by Reccoa and Sarah. On the other hand, Katz was an absolute shit. Then there's Happy Tomino's Turn A where the women were the more competent ones.

tell your friends he's a massive dumbass like holy shit.
I get he tried to pitch you Gundam with the ones that more or less stand-alone, but fuck you watched the one that's centered to a fault around character relations instead of grand-scale conflicts, the mediocre one that precedes Seed Destiny, and the one that's great but assumes you're familiar with every other Gundam before it.
You've been watching it all wrong anon, no wonder you have the wrong impression of the franchise

Here's what you do. If you have 0079 fresh in your mind, go watch 0080 which is fantastic, then War in the Pocket which is sakuga fuel, and then jump into Zeta (TV), which is the love-it or hate-it point for the rest of UC Gundam. If by that point you still dislike Gundam then by all means call it quits with the franchise.

When he's not transformed, he's actually a pretty good guy, but when he turns into the Hulk, he turns into a more morally ambiguous character.
>>
>>141746585
No, ReMASTER.
Remastering is scanning the original film, NOT the cels, in a higher resolution for digital distribution.
This nigger >>141745709 has literally no idea what he's talking about.
"Upscaling" is using digital technology to increase the size of the frame and it has to make up information to fill in the gaps where the pixels once bordered. It's like taking an image in Photoshop and telling it to enlarge it for every single frame.
There ARE algorithms can can do a decent job of enlarging the picture. But it usually doesn't turn out nearly as well as something MADE in HD, which a rescan of the film can do.
And rescanning the film is by far the best way to get the best picture quality possible.
Assuming the original film negatives still exist. Evangelion lost the negatives to one of their episodes(16) and so had to upscale it(rather poorly) from an old DVD encode.

I finished Zambot 3 recently. First few episodes were great, then it dragged it's feet a bit until around episode 11 or 12ish, next thing I know the bad guys are turning humans in to living timebombs and shit hit the fan. Really much better than I expected. I tried watching Daitarn 3 afterwards but it just bored me a few episodes in.

I think I need a break from mecha for a bit. Probably going to watch Utena or El Hazard soon.

Also why the fuck is there no Slayers BDs? Was going to rewatch that but it's nothing but pretty low quality DVDs.

I don't know why that got spoilered.
Just to show the difference in quality. Here's a shot from an old DVD of Outlaw Star, which would have been made by scanning an either late-generation BetaMax or DigiBeta tape or one that had been sitting in a closet degrading for several years.
Now, this DVD set is from 2006, and OS was only 7 years removed from its run at the time. This is just how poorly those tapes last.

Yeah people dickride the original DP tv series like crazy, even going so far as to claim that it's better than Flash, but all it really has going for it is Kei&Yuri's banter. The rest is aesthetic and whatnot but it's all very trite and as badly animated as you'd expect a mid-80s TV series to be.

The OVAs and the movie, however, are fucking great. I'm pretty sure that when people praise DP, they mostly have the OVAs in mind.

Yeah, pretty much my thoughts on it when I watched it again. It was cool and fun when I was a young teen, but being over 30 I was pretty bored and ended up just turning it off after a few episodes.
