While it is mostly for his father to blame, the reason why he is so happy and excited for the new world and why he is so clingy to the people around him was due to the fact its a new life and a fresh start. He can finally make a name for himself rather than live up to his father, not to mention they were the first people who treated him kindly, and a place he can call "home" a place of his own, basically, Subaru still loves them nonetheless. He felt detached thus his reasons for wanting to work so hard in this world and dying for others was to have a place where he could belong. He wanted to have something that was his and his alone that he could work for instead of being in the shadows of someone else. He has a chance. Could have been early in the story but I guess better late than never, right?

Not to mention he craves their approval because he craves anyone's approval. He hates himself and tries to make himself feel better by saving others, it doesn't work and his own sense of worth only grows worse. That's why he boils over eventually. You people seem to underestimate just how much Subaru hates himself.

Not only that but he was marked for death the moment he stepped into the world, so even IF he abandoned people he would have died anyways, maybe in more brutal ways. Considering how many people actually start hunting him down once he gets transported.

25 chapters of constant death, torture, and unspeakable horrors by the Witch Cult.
Subaru and Rem are tortured, mutilated, and killed by Betelgeuse, the Bishop of Sloth.
In one of the loops Subaru finds his way back to the mansion alone, only to find the whole village piled in a mountain of corpses, Ram mutilated in front of them, Emilia dead in the mansion, and an enraged Puck going out of control, freezing the entire region and instantly killing Subaru.
In another loop Subaru is driven insane from the torture he receives from Betelgeuse, who rips apart Rem in front of his eyes piece by piece.
This insanity lasts a whole loop as Rem tries to carry Subaru who has turned into a drooling madman and make back to the mansion. At the end of this loop, the two are again captured and tortured, but this manages to snap Subaru back to sanity thanks to his anger.

After many deaths and revelations Subaru starts to formulate plans to save everything. He works to redeem himself in the eyes of everyone who shunned him.
He eventually wins the trust of several Queen candidates, and forms an alliance with Julius, the knight he lost duel to, Wilhelm, an elderly swordsman under Cruche, and beastmen mercenaries working for Anastasia (another candidate).
The group heads out first to destroy the White Whale who is blocking the passage to the mansion (~30 chapters dedicated to this). Wilhelm has a beef with the said Whale, for losing his wife many years ago.
The battle is very fierce and those who were eaten by the whale are ERASED from the world. History, memory of them, everything. No one, not even family, remembers them from ever existing. However, for some reason Subaru can remember them.
But after several deaths and loops, the group finally downs the whale.

Subaru's save point is moved (it seems killing the whale was an objective).
Now Subaru heads the allies to face Betelgeuse and the Cult of the Witch.
They lose several times, and everyone killed, but each time Subaru learns more about the Bishop and plans his tactics. The insane Bishop has the power to manifest invisible "Hands of God" that can kill anyone without them ever seeing them.
After many bloody battles, Subaru and his allies is victorious and Betelgeuse is killed.
It's the best possible outcome, or so it seemed.

Subaru wins back the trust of Emilia, but learns a shocking truth... she doesn't remember who Rem is.
He rushes to go see Rem, to find her comatose and no one remembering her.
Rem and Cruche has been attacked by Bishop of Gluttony. Rem was eaten and "erased" from the world, whereas Cruche's own memory was lost (others remember her fine).
Not even Ram, Rem's own sister, remembers who she is.

Look, let me explain this to you. I know you're a lost cause, but I want to at least try.

Subaru has never worked a single day in his life. He is now in a world where he has no connections and no marketable skills. He cannot cook, clean, garden, or do anything decently. The twins spend a lot of time teaching him very basic things. It is absolutely not their job to teach him how to read, they do it out of sympathy. It is absolutely not their job to comfort their extremely suspicious guest while he is writhing like a madman in his sleep. They do it anyways out of sympathy.

In all timelines where he is killed by them, it is because his paranoia made them suspicious and then he takes a final dangerous action that pushes them over the edge.

Timeline 1 - He does nothing suspicious. But does smell of the witch. Rem/Ram have nothing to do with his death. He dies to other causes.

Timeline 2 - He is now extremely suspicious, knows things he should not know, and he is heavier with the witch's scent. He takes the final action of advancing towards Emilia's room at night while vomiting. Later you will learn that there is a group called the witch cult and that some of their disciples also display that exact same behavior. While to us, we know he is sick, to them he is a threat.

This is a universe where people have special powers and can kill each other in instants if allowed close.

Timeline 3 - Even more suspicious, even more witch scent. He pretends to leave the mansion, but instead, picks a high vantage point where he can see Emilia's room and holds a knife in his hand.

Timeline 4 - Barricades himself in his room and other than crazy rants does nothing else. His appearance coincides with Rem's death and his apology is basically an admission.

Rosewaal basically forces Emilia to undergo a trial she has no way of overcoming without Subaru's help.
Emilia constantly mentally breaks in this arc.
There's also loads of other fun things. Like dealing with the mansion (Beatrice) getting attacked while they're away, a swarm of Gluttony rabbits (imagine a locust swarm, but of rabbits that are super deadly and can't be killed unless you kill them all at the same time) that need dealt with.
Not to mention Rosewaal himself clearly being an enemy.

Subaru gets to see a what-if segment of what might have happened (the person showing him these doesn't know if they're parallel worlds or really just the world calculating what would have happened) after he dies in certain loops.
Like Emilia bawling over Subaru killing himself after finding out Rem was in a coma, screaming WHY WHY would you do this to me.
Or Ram and Beatrice shocked that Subaru jumped off a cliff and killed himself.
Pack getting killed by Reinhardt after killing Subaru.
The one time where Sloth possesses Subaru and dies a very gruesome death while keeping Sloth trapped is a good what-if.
Since it was basically Emilia's fault and she knew it and had a front row seat.
Subaru realizes there's a possibility that those universe didn't cease to exist and takes this all very hard.

Arc 5

Subaru & co heads to a lake city to negotiate a deal with the mayor. He has a precious stone that Emilia can use to bring back Puck from his sleep. (the gem that housed Puck was destroyed in arc 3 or 4, I can't remember)

All five of the queen candidates gather in the city for... I can't remember why, but I believe Anastasia summoned them.

But this posed a serious national security, having all of them at one spot... and of course, the Witch Cult arrive to terrorize the city. One of the things they were looking for was a copy of the Book of Wizdom that belonged to Roswaal and now in Subaru's team's possession.

Anyways the whole arc becomes a massive war between the Witch Cult vs everyone we've been introduced to so far.

There are several incredibly strong powerhouses on Subaru's side, but they're still mostly in massive disadvantage (with the exception of Reinhart, but he can't be everywhere at the same time..) because FOUR Bishops leads this terror attack.
Remember, just a single Bishop caused so much trouble and misery in arc 3. Here we have four of them, and they're all hax as hell.

Just like Betelgeuse, each of the Bishops have horrifying abilities straight out of horror films. I'll get into that in another post.

Do we have a total death count for Subaru for the anime, LN, and WN? I'm sure the WN is probably impossible to discern, but maybe we can do the LN and anime at least. I think we're at about 9 for the anime myself, but I could be a few off. We really should keep a counter for the poor boy, at least we'll remember exactly how much shit he'll have gone through.

Subaru dies a few encounters and learns a few things about the bishops, then takes the lead.
He uses the communication tower to reach out to the whole city, encouraging them that help is here.
He then splits up the team to combat the four bishops, and to put a stop to their destruction of the city.

On the cult side we have:
Sirius Romanée-Conti, Bishop of Wrath
Self-claimed wife of Betelgeuse. Covered in bandages ad dragging chains, she is overly excited maniac and when she senses her loved one inside Subaru, she first thinks her love had come back.
She has the ability to impose her emotions and her physical state with everyone around her, instantly forcing normal citizens to be empathetic to her and she uses this to brainwash and control them. They also take the same damage she receives, effectively turning them all into hostages.
This causes several deaths for Subaru, including times when he was driven mad from her influence.
Sirius is adept in combat, uses her chains and controls fire to fight.
She was eventually faced off by Priscilla and Liliana the bard. Liliana used her abilities to neutralize Sirius's empathy powers, and Priscilla defeated her with a flaming sword.

Capella Emerada Rugunika - Bishop of Lust
The worst Bishop of them all, according to the author.
She's neither insane nor have some zealous belief she hangs onto. Rather, she's purely evil and malicious.
She can transform herself and others to any form she desires, and loves to change people into something to make them suffer. She's also got dragon blood running in her veins, and uses that to poisons Subaru & Cruch.

The powers Subaru receives have limited functionality.
First he only had the dark mist spell as his only skill, and he overused it until he lost the "inner gate" needed to do magic. The mist saved his ass a few times, but it's broken and gone now.
By killing Betelgeuse, Subaru gained that Sloth's power. Unfortunately he can only manifest like one invisible hand and land a single hit at a time. He also can't release a wave of sloth like the Bishop could.
He got drenched in dark dragon blood which burned and poisoned Cruche. The only useful thing he got out of it is transferring that blood from her to himself in order to save her.
He then gained Bishop of Greed's power, which is to become immune to any harm while he stops his heart. Obviously Subaru can't make any use of this ability yet.
His only consistently useful ability is him becoming master to Betty, but due to his limited power she can't really use hers to the fullest either.
On top of being not-so-useful, many of these powers are tainted with evilness of the Witch.

The whole fucking point is whether or not you can justify the maid's behavior. The core realization of Subaru is that he is only looking at the situation from his perspective like an autist, rather than considering the feelings and viewpoints of other people and how his actions appear to them. That is the fucking point, that he gets where they are coming from now and why they would kill him.

In the third arc, Rem begins to offer an explanation about her sister, but he shouts that he does not care, knocks her down, and then runs for it. He then does a pitiful "why do you hate me" rant, but he never actually bothers to think about why she would. He cares only about his feelings, his affection, and his situation.

However, he then realizes that he fucked up. His pre-suicide speech is an admission that he did not bother to look at their perspective or even learn more about his situation. He was too focused on his viewpoint and playing the victim.

The loops also involve increasing distance from Rem/Ram.

In loop 1, he works diligently as a coworker.
In loop 2, he starts cutting corners with his work and is more focused on investigation.
In loop 3, he interacts with them as just a guest.
In loop 4, he completely cuts them off, locking himself away from them.

So, why is he suspicious:

- Subaru claims to be from a land to the east. Lagunica is the easternmost country in the world. There is no further east.
- Subaru is unable to explain how he even arrived at Lagunica.
- Subaru is present during the first assassination attempt on Emilia and becomes her savior.
- Subaru has near prescient knowledge of the entire mansion and where everything is.
- Subaru's request to work at the mansion is actually a request to be close to Emilia, the successor for the throne. It's unusual.
- Rem and Ram's entire community, parents, relatives, everything were murdered a few years ago.
- The smell of the witch was present.
- Rem and Ram are at the mansion because Roswaal offered them his protection. They view him as their protector and guarantor.
- Rem and Ram are under orders to eliminate him if he does anything suspicious. They are also employed as guards for the purpose of killing anyone suspicious
- Rem and Ram see the mansion as the place where they belong. Subaru is an outsider who is violating their home with the Witch's scent.
- Emilia is a prime target for assassination.
- The previous royal family were all killed.
- He is making romantic overtures to Emilia.

So there are a lot of reasons for them to believe he is either an assassin or a spy. He may also have romantic designs on Emilia, possibly for power. However, even with all of this evidence against him, they still help him out, teach him how to read, ease his pain, and do many other things to take care of him (some not shown in the anime). They do that regardless of his behavior.

Rem's death shows Subaru that there are two separate things going on. The constant murderer who is trying to kill anyone at the mansion via curse. And Rem and Ram who do not kill him unless he violently crosses the bounds by holding a knife staring at their house, by heading to Emilia's room late at night, or by withholding information regarding a murder.

There are countless of cases where people were imprisoned and interrogated without torture in medieval times, or tortured only after they refused to divulge information which is already a different ball game from this situation. And torture itself was also used as a tool to intimidate other potential like-minders, to satisfy the populace's urge to see direct justice, which obviously Rem isn't doing so those cases can be safely excluded as well. The cases where torture was used solely because of a genuine belief that it was the most effective way to obtain information are far less common than you think.
