How to tell if something is a shitpost:
>calls the community made guide/whatever method a piece of shit with no reasoning given why
>insults someone giving helpful advice with no reasoning given why
>attempts to create arguments over virtually nothing (eg opinions without facts)
>"spam questions" that are easily answered via a 1 second glance at the guide

I don't really know if I actually want to do it, my image of talking to Japanese people is that they don't really teach you anything and won't correct you if you say the wrong thing.

>>141506084
I guess it depends who you talk to, I said that to a few of the people I spoke to but they never seemed to keep it up, but to be fair I never tended to correct their English either, always just felt kind of rude

If you want something where you'll have accurate corrections all the time you can try out Lang8 , people are really serious on there and will correct everything you say, but it's harder to think of shit to write about imo because it's like a blog kinda deal as opposed to one on one convos

Is there any way to do vertical text properly in Anki? You can cheat by setting the div width to the width of your font, but that fucks up when you get a card with 拗音 (see top of pic).

I did some googling and there is a CSS option for vertical text (-webkit-writing-mode: vertical-rl;), but it doesn't seem to work correctly in Anki. The glyphs are supposed to be vertical when using this option (see middle of pic), but Anki actually rotates them sideways (see bottom of pic).

Should I read Zaregoto?

Back in my EOP days I've read the first two volumes, but now I'd of course go for the entire series in Japanese.

But damn the books are long. I check out volume 1 in Book Off and could read it 100% fine (why do people say Nisio is hard?), but the page count is challenging.
>>
>>
>>141506480
Long books are good books. Reading is good. Read as much as you can. Then read even more.

Please screenshot for proofs.

Also, when you say

Which CSS option are you referring to specifically?
>>
>>141505510
Usually compounds use the on reading, but on some occasions, there are compounds made up of kun readings.
I think there are some exceptions for lone kanji too, but none come to mind atm.

Get enough vocab/exposure in you and you'll be able to feel them out.

>>141505547
Not useless; especially if you're set on reading rather than listening. Vocab and the rest falls into place if you're flexible and attentive.

Perhaps not an immediately obvious one, but reading mostly one volume LNs allows me to swtich between various authors with various styles and topics and feel the feeling of accomplished accompanying finishing a book more often.

If I decided to read Zaregoto, I'd end up Nisio'd for a long time.

You don't have to read the series in one go you know. And whether it's worth the time investment depends on if you want to read it or something else more, pretty simple.

Anyways, what are some of those one volume LNs? I'm curious, since I'm only really familiar with the serialized ones.
>>
>>141506863
But I kinda want to. I'm just not sure I'd keep wanting all the time it would take to read them.

Also I'm not sure if I should skip volumes 1 and 2 since I already EOP'd them few years back.
>>
I'm watching horrible's release of Mayoiga ep 7 and, at 18:37, one of the characters seems to say「女性べしはつげんね。」 (TL'd as "Talk about misogyny.")
What does the べし part mean?
The best I could dig up was it possibly being a form of へす, meaning 'to push/dent/press'.
>>
>>141506913
>Anyways, what are some of those one volume LNs?

Gagaga Bunko has plently of those. Seikaisha Fictions too.

For starters you can read 田中ロミオ's LNs. You'll see that there's a reason why people say he's on a level above others. Especially if you read a book of his after reading some standard LN written by some whoever.

唐辺葉介 also has several one-volume works under 星海社FICTIONS. He's notable, cause he's actually Setoguchi Ren'ya.

Having memory of the story can be useful as it'll help you avoid getting too confused. So from a learning perspective it isn't a bad idea I think.

>>
>>141506974
べし is from べき most likely (the old 終止形 conjugation of it), but I can't say what it's supposed to mean.
>>
>>141506974
べし is Old Japanese, used today too in more formal or serious contexts. Just google it and you can find million explanation. Example: http://kou.benesse.co.jp/nigate/japanese/a13j0112.html
If you want to write in in kanji, it's 可し, but that was used just in 漢文訓読, i.e. 不可欠 - 欠ける可から不 - かけるべからず.

Most importantly it's not tied with nouns, so when you say
>one of the characters seems to say 女性べし
you likely misheard.

>>141507116
It's way more proper to say べき is 連体形 of べし, as べし is the base form.

Anyone stumbled upon any proper audio lessons that can be used when not doing Anki? I find myself cycling or sitting in public transit a lot, and I feel I could use said time to listen to some stuff. the resource guide suggest Japanese pod 101 which is sort-of-free but I'm looking for something actually free or "free"
>>
>>141507326
Audiobooks?
>>
>>141506974
I think 女性べしはつげん refers to statements like "women should stay in the kitchen" et.c. Which would be written as 女性は....べし in Japanese. So the character is pointing that whatever was said sounded a lot like something like that, which of course often sounds pretty condescending, and at times misogynistic.

I made that images a fair while ago now. Well, not made it as much as mocked it up in paint.net then posted it, thinking nothing of it. For whatever reasons it ended up being used in thread OPs. Personally I like it, which makes sense being that I put it together .
Don't really know what you dislike about the image but it didn't take me all that long to make it, a few minutes maybe. If you don't like it, what not do what I did and randomly make or put together your own image and post it in the thread? Maybe an anon will take some sort of interest in it like they did with this image? I also mocked up the yaranaika/dekinaichan image that guide-anon added to the guide a while ago, from the same process: I was dicking around and for whatever reason ended up putting that together in paint.net and decided to post it in the thread, expecting maybe someone to laugh at it and then disappear into the archives forever.

So, yeah, it can happen. There is always the option of making the threads yourself and using a different image. Personally, I like pic related more, but it fell into the archives as I expected the sakura OP image design to also end up. 4chan is pretty random at the end of the day.
>>
>>141507704
What happened is someone is spamming the gray sakura OP to troll people.

Judging more so by the pictures and less so by what he's saying, I'd say that とめる refers to just taking the pen off the paper as soon as the kana is finished, while はらう means to swipe the brush a little bit after you're finished

You can see the kana with はらう on them have brush sweep affects at the end while the とめる ones just stop

Jisho says はらう can mean 9. to make a sweeping stroke (in Japanese calligraphy) so I guess that's it

Damien said back in 2013 that the version of webkit Anki uses lags behind the most up to date versions, and maybe it's still that way. Anyway, if you can make heads of tails of this, it might be something you can reverse engineer for your own usage:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/28934674/centering-all-fields-in-anki-html

An anon a fair while ago now managed to do this really well (that stackoverflow post may even be his post before he got the kinks worked out) but I can't find anything about it on desu.

I copied the formatting in that guy's pastebin link, and this is what I get.

I'm guessing there's a problem with the Gahnoo/Linux version of Anki. Either that or it's something to do with my font rendering, in which case maybe it's an Infinality bug.
>>
>>141509596
I got the same result but on Windows 8.1, so I don't think it is related to Gnu/Linux, unless our results are the results of two different issues, each unique to our operating environments.

Don't know why I can't find the relevant posts on desu, though. They have random entries dating back to 2010 with some things but doing a search for
"anki"+"vertical"
results in fuck all and change, and I'm pretty certain the anon who managed to pull it off and upload his deck and a pastebin with his settings used both "anki" and "vertical" in his texts in those few threads a whole heap of times. I bet the jews did this.

Seems like it's not just us. I googled "Anki" "vertical-rl" and found this:

>488 :名無しさん@英語勉強中:2015/06/20(土) 07:07:59.21 ID:kmt4Irfw
>-webkit-writing-mode: vertical-rl;

>css3はこれで縦書きになるけど
>なぜか文字が横向きになっちゃうんだよな
>jsは竹取.jsとかいうの弄ったけどできなかった

>縦書き出来たって人いたらやり方教えて欲しいです
http://yomogi.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/english/1424287848/

From what I can understand of that, he's saying that "-webkit-writing-mode: vertical-rl;" is supposed to give you vertical text, but for some reason the characters are rotated sideways, and after messing around with javascript(?) he wasn't able to fix it. The bottom line is asking anyone who figured out how to make it work right to tell him what they did. Doesn't seem like he got any replies though.

Anki counts all answers towards its main stats, and this includes new cards and relapsed cards. Incidentally, this biases the "correct rate" towards 50%, especially for people who have a lot of relapses, but fail few "Review" cards (cards that still have an interval of at least one day and haven't been flunked before)
>>
>>141510589
relapsed card - card which you failed yesterday
review card - any card which isn't new and wasn't failed yesterday

Is that right?
>>
>>141510671
Here:
relapsed card - Card which you're already flunked, and then flunk again before graduating it (graduating = making it young/mature)
review card - Any card which isn't new and hasn't been failed yet today

Ah, you know, that might be a pretty big issue, even if you aren't really feeling bad about it at the moment while reading.

Why not give reading a break for a while, while increasing vocab or grammar, or both, study in Anki? I went through a similar thing as you appear to going through at after a while I found myself more or less really, really wanting to get back into reading and ended up balls deep in it but this time with the help of a better grasp on both vocab and grammar and found myself not so caught up with both look up issues and feeling unwilling to read/watch the end of a series.

Who knows?

Are you implying that those stats are acceptable for someone who is less than a month or two into Anki?

I was pantsu on head retarded when I first started doing Anki. I did 100 new cards a day for a week, then 50 a day for a week after that. I really suffered for my stupidity (reviews took ages and I got tons of cards wrong), but my retention never went lower than 52%. After doing a review-only day and adjusting my new cards to 20 a day, my retention went up to >70%. I gave up a month or so later because I just hated Anki by then and was feeling generally negative about the entire learning process, but that's besides the point.
>>
>>141521706

That stat is a bit misleading. I quit Japanese about half a year ago and just came back to it recently. I was able to get through that many cards as quickly as I did because they were still fairly familiar to me. I'm starting to struggle now though because I overestimated how good my memory was and did too many cards that I'd basically completely forgotten too quickly.

In particular a couple of days ago I hit some cards that I just can't seem to remember no matter what. I even resorted to writing them out but it didn't help at all. They just won't go in my head for some reason.

A friendly reminder that if you need to be told something more than one you are a literal retard, which makes every person who needs anki to remember words a degenerate.
>>
>>141521955
Yes, that's because they press "again" on cards that are on the 1-minute interval. Anki counts every single answer towards the correct %age rate, so if you never press "again" on cards that are on the 1-minute interval, it means that every single card will lapse a maximum of one time for every time you get it "right". You need to press "again" on the 1-minute interval in order to have successive "again"s on the same card on default stats. The only exceptions are if you bury a card that's currently on the 1-minute interval or take your stats before completing all available reps.

Nope. Notice under the "Review Time" section the sudden appearance of those big red chunks. Those are me sitting and staring at those cards with frustration thinking "why the fuck can't I remember this?" and failing them over and over. There are about 6 cards in total and the only reason I'm even able to pass them is that eventually they are the only cards left to review so the gap between them becomes small enough that I'm able to just barely remember them by the next time that they show up.

Incidentally, the last time I was learning Japanese, I had the exact same problem with these specific cards. I don't know what about them is so incompatible with my brain.

What worked for me was setting my graduation interval to two days instead of one. For some reason if I lapse them the first time on the successive day, they enter an endless recursion or refusal. But if I lapse them the first time later than the successive day, they don't.

My brain is fucked up, though, so where normal people remember something for one or two days I remember it for two to four. In return I have basically no working memory and a bad long term memory, except for things that I've strongly learned. YMMV
>>
>>141522146
Post 'em, /djt/ will work together and give you the perfect mnemonics to remember them
>>
>>141522146
I had that problem with some of core too mainly because core contains a lot of similar or similar-looking words, and it ends up being difficult to know which was which, especially at first when you're not really familiar with kanji/radicals.

If it's just a few cards giving you trouble I really think you should just suspend them and forget about it. There are a lot of words in the language and these specific ones won't make or break whether you know Japanese. And once you get farther ahead you could always come back to them. The real problem would be spending too much time on them instead of learning other things.

Shit like this is why I'm inclined to say kanji study is severely underrated. After doing a recall/recognition deck for a while with just English keywords for the kanji, it becomes so much easier to remember the readings for them when looking at words like this. Even mnemonics become rarely necessary, I just see 普 here and it reads ふ.

Of course it also helps that almost all of these come up in the first thousand cards of the 5k frequency deck, and so there's really no excuse for not being able to recognize at least half of them at first glance. They're fucking everywhere.

>>
>>141524016
While it's all pretty subjective, my experience tells me this is unrealistic and in all likelihood actually a slower method than just hunkering down and copying down kanji into a notebook for an hour or two a day. After you get a good couple thousand down, you can speed through a frequency vocab deck at a hundred or so new cards a day without breaking so much as a sweat. Your recall of these words is actually improved by seeing so many new ones at a time, since you encounter the same kanji more often and become able to actually read them in words you've never seen before. Since my recall has been above average from the start, I don't have any confidence that the remaining majority of DJT will be able to "learn kanji from vocab" in the way most experienceless beginners around here love to tout.

Not him, but while I see the benefits of grinding kanji individually for a while and then breezing through vocab I can't see myself doing that. It may be sub optimal but I feel more motivated by making steady "progress" towards my goal rather than an investment for the future.

I know both can be considered progress, but you get what I mean. In the end "see what works best for you" wins out I guess.
>>
>>141524650
>Do you have trouble visualising the stories when reading them? You should be seeing them as concrete things with your mind's eye.
I would lean towards answering "no", but it was over a year ago that I did it so I can't say for sure. I think I just tried to chain the elements of the kanji together with the story rather than actually visualising anything.

The only thing I remember clearly is being very perfectionistic about selecting stories off koohii (i.e. only picking ones which didn't annoy me in some way). Sometimes I would spend quite a long time looking through the stories and trying to decide which one I hated the least before reluctantly choosing one of them.

It's like deck of flash cards. If you don't speak natively English, it's like a stack of cards where you write the thing you want to remember on one side and the solution on the other. I did an deck I got off the anki website called "All in One Kanji" that had something like 7000 cards, half recall and half recognition. After doing something similar with radicals I went through that deck at 30 new cards a day. I didn't really stick to one concrete memorization strategy for these, I just kind of went along and did what helped most. For the most part it didn't take a full-on RTK anecdote to get me to memorize the kanji, though there are probably a few I needed to think about more to really burn them in.
I recently stopped adding new cards from it, and deleted all the recall cards in order to ease the time commitment so that I could drill vocab instead.

Probably, like I said it depends on how your brain works. I know it was almost torture for me to go through core2k/6k before all the kanji work I did, though. I was going through the cards too slowly to be able to form those connections in time for them to stick, and words like 製造 or 経済 would just leave me reaching for nothing.

A big factor I sort of glossed over is how much you expose yourself to the language before or outside of grinding vocab. It's significantly harder to measure but all the cartoons I watch have to count for something.

Hi guys.

I started learning vocab a few days ago with Memrise. Some of the "course" mix learning words as kana, with words as kanji.

But I don't see the point, I'd rather learn the words, then learn the kanji, and after that maybe reviewing the words in a new light with their kanji.

Am I doing it wrong, is their method more efficient?

Also, is Anki better than Memrise?

You learn words and combine them.
For example, when you learn the words "apple" and "good", you can combine them and say "good apple". Now if you read through Tae Kim and learn a bit of grammar, you'll be able to say something more complex, like "apples are good".

ok lets stop putting aside whether or not you can read japanese

Try to grab "read real japanese" from the CoR, it handholds you through reading a few short novels , explaining how every phrase works.

Alternatively you could read an already translated VN in parallel to the original version in two windows, and compare your own translation line by line.
>>
>>141535974
You have to invest alot of time into this, if you're not willing to dedicate hundreds of hours into studying then you're not going to make it. keep reading "Tylers guide" and doing SRS. then move on.
>>
I finished TK a long time ago, but I've been wondering about something lately that I'm not sure was ever really explicitly mentioned in TK's guide

Are there any verb conjugations that prevent it from forming a complete clause?
Or is it maybe something you have to get from context maybe?

For example take 手紙を書く as the base clause.
I know if I turn it into a verb clause with 事 then the verb 書く still applies to 手紙を

But sometimes the verb is conjugated to other things like past tense or te-form. Does the verb still _always_ apply to 手紙を regardless of conjugation, or are there some conjugations that would make the verb a part of something else and then the next verb would be the one that applies to 手紙を?

Ok maybe here is a better example:

In a 2chan post I just saw:
>エロを描いてもらいたい同人絵師スレ
But which verb 描く or もらう applies to エロを?
>>
>>141536699
描いてもらる connects the two verbs with the te-form and they form a single unit. Don't consider them as two separate verbs.
The エロ is the object of the whole 描いてもらいたい part.
>>
>>141536699
i dont understand all the confusing grammar terms you used in your other post but isnt it just both because て form verb and もらう is like a compound word or w/e

Hey guys, short time luker first time poster. I'm going through Tae Kim and I came across an example I don't quite understand.

www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/nounparticles
Example 4 at the bottom:

アリス:その人が買うんじゃなかったの?
Alice: Wasn't it that that person was the one to buy?

My thought process:

その人
That person

Is the one

買う
To buy

んじゃなかった
Were they not? (past negative explanation - speaker expects the person to have bought)

???

What is the final の doing in this sentence?

pls no bully

hey these MSDSs aren't going to translate themselves
>>
>>141537579

>>
>>141537579
の is a 語尾, or sentence ending particle, something that you just glue to the end of the sentence to change its feel a bit. It's covered in the next lesson.

Something that you definitely heard before, ね is also the same function in そうですね

did namasensei's guide help any of you guys?
>>
>>141537579
の at the end of a sentence is something akin to asking for confirmation or an explanation. It's the "Wasn't it..." of the sentence.
>>
>>141537786
I assume you're confused since the explanatory の is already in there so what's another one doing at the end sort of thing. It's just something you need to get used to and isn't really all that complicated. Just get a feel for what it means and once you start reading outside of example sentences you'll get a better feel for it. Don't beat yourself up over it.
