Just curious, how popular is anime in the UK?

I don't know very many British anime fans and just wondering if its as popular there as say US, Australia, Canada, etc.

Also if you a an anime fan from the UK was are your favorites?
>>
>>141474391
You should just say London.

It's the only place that matters in the UK and the only place foreigners come to visit the UK for.

Also I'll just say one of my favourites is Shiki.

Never hear about it, everyone keeps to themselves for the most part.

Pokemon was big here also everything with lolis in it, we all pedos here.
>>
Not very.
Presumably because there's no novelty in watching shows about weird-teethed, tea-drinking perverts because that's just normal.

Also I think American dubs end up turning people away.

>Also if you a an anime fan from the UK was are your favorites?
Boku no Pico
>>
>>141474391
Brit here, really doesn't seem to be that popular, there are a couple of narutards at uni but that's about it

NGE & Katanagatari
>>
>>141474447
And, the only place that has a majority Muslim population.
>>
Anime in the UK? We got people thinking that Urotsukidōji was representative of the medium.
>>
Animes a pretty World Wide thing as long as you have internet access. Which is how all of us are getting anime in the first place.
I mean I have no idea where you guys are from. Not everyone in this board is from America.
It's also pretty popular in places like Brazil
>>
I'd like to see an English dub that done by ACTUAL English people. Xenoblade seemed to prove that at least a decent idea.

Its not like American English is representative of the English language as a whole.
>>
I hear the Queen is a quite fond of Netoge.

Though it's a pretty cheesy 70s style dub.

Did you ever see the GB dubs of the DBZ movies that aired on toonami, they were a disgrace.
>>
Well they I assume the UK has Adult Swim or Toonami right? or at least Cartoon Network.
>>
>>141475182
Channels that tried to air 'mature' anime all failed, only shit for kids or american garbage are on now.

>>
We're too busy apologising for social situations that aren't our fault then going on in silence to openly have interests. Might be some anime fans out there but I'll never know.
>>
>>141475182
UK channels aimed at children aren't allowed to broadcast more mature content.
Everything has to be suitable for their primary audience no matter the time of day or night.

Plus, the UK subsidiaries seem to be run by monkeys.
>>
>>141475182
There is but they don't show anime.

Anime is pretty much only ever shown on UK in the early mornings, for kids. And it's pretty much Astro Boy and Pokemon and nothing else.
>>
>>141475368
also Yu-Gi-Oh!
>>
the Sci-fi channel used to air a lot of good stuff and CN tried to make a spin off anime channel but weren't interested in acquiring shows other than Cowboy bebop and outlaw star. There was a push to make anime more popular on cable and and sky around the mid 00's but it all failed miserably.
>>
>>141475368
>Astro Boy
Interesting. Since it's so famous and I've never seen it being broadcasted in Germany, I was curious whether it was in other countries.
>>
>>141475182
Television here is terrible. Only way people here would find out about anime is online on imageboards or other sites like Plebbit.

Its really not. If anything, out of the big English speaking countries its probably the least popular in the UK.

I blame the UK animation market being killed in infancy by the U.S pinching all our fucking talent with fat Disney money and the BBC crancking out 1000+ Dramas and documentaries which just destroy the competition. Hence no homegrown animation (save for claymation but that's dead now as well) and no appetite for it. That and we have some retarded broadcast laws, so it would never get broadcast anyway.

Its a shame really.
>>
>>141475368
>and nothing else
You forgot that Film4 also shows Ghibli films every now and again as well.
>>
An anime channel existed in the Uk in the mid 00's!
I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.
It showed Cowboy Beebop, Wolfs rain, Outlaw star,GITS, FMA, Planetes and the first 20 episodes of Bleach.

I think I must have been the only person watching it because it disappeared after a year.

To be fair, that's not necessarily a bad thing considering the high quality of BBC documentaries in particular.
>>
I'm from the UK and watch a lot of anime. Likewise I know a lot of people who also watch it and, while there's a slight stigma, people seem to be fairly open about it for the most part.

I like a lot of stuff, though my favourite anime series is probably Haikyu or Log Horizon.
>>
It seems a lot of people around 23-25 seem to be secret weebs.

But its not mainstream and people don't talk about it even if they do watch it.

Not all that popular, anime never had a solid bedrock here as during the 90/80s British cartoons held strongly in the morning/afternoon slots.

Only anime that's broadcasted in the UK is on the channel Film4 and that's pretty much exclusively Studio Ghibli, thought I think Paprika has been played before.

Britfag here. It's fairly popular among the 'geeky' subcultures. A lot of unis have anime societies too. Bookshops carry manga too, although you're only ever gonna find the popular stuff like Bleach.

The London-bubble is responsible for the vast, vast majority of problems including everything political (the Scottish independence referendum was largely motivated by anger at WM).

I've seen plenty of people who mention they like anime or manga here, I could walk into my local Waterstones and pick up a couple volumes or go down to my LCS however the medium doesn't seem as popular and still viewed as pretty weird by most mainstream people. Not as accepted as somewhere say like France, Spain, Canada, America, etc. Where those places are more used to it.

>What are your favourites?
I usually like older anime from the 70s and 80s, Leiji Matsumoto and Yoshiyuki Tomino are two of my favourite directors. Also Dezaki mostly for Rose of Versailles. I watch just about anything really.

As for manga I'm a fan of Drawn and Quarterly's manga selection and usually buy something from them once in a while since they've got a nice catalog of manga. Yoshihiro Tatsumi and Shigeru Miziku are two of my favourite artists, very sad to hear they passed away last year. Also like Jiro Taniguchi, Taiiyo Matsumoto, Junji Ito, Satoshi Kon and Osamu Tezuka.

>>141475182

We had our own Toonami back in the early 00s which showed some stuff like Bebop, Big O, Outlaw Star, DBZ, Tenchi, really quite based looking back on it. We used to have a good amount of anime shown on our screens but it's virtually forgotten now but we do have a channel called Sony movies which shows some anime series but they usually just stick to Bleach and Black Lagoon and show a couple movies like the Berserk trilogy and Roujin Z.
>>
Ghibli movies are popular. Not too long ago they showed them all on Film 4.

I also saw The Wind Rises in a cinema and there were quite a few people there.

''Animation is for kids'' is still the collective conscience here and the industry itself outside of pre-school shows is more or less dead. If its not an american sitcom that isn't suited for minors, it won't get a second glance.

There was all sorts airing in the 90's and early 2000's on fox kids and toonami and I swear we had at least one dedicated channel for a short time on Sky, but not anymore.

Eh, anime has its place in London.

Living around the general area I can always tell when the MCM convention is happening because I can see anime cosplay on the Tube. Though it's all casual shit. Have previously seen

>Shingeki no Kyojin Scout Legionnaires
>Bleach shinigami
>Naruto
>Pikachu
>Junko Enoshima (at the time when Danganronpa in English only existed as a SA LP and fan translation)
>Hatsune Miku

Also some of the large bookstores have halfway decent manga shelves, and HMV tends to have anime shelf (usually half-filled with Ghibli but has also in the past included trash like Kampfer and Strike Witches and Nisemonogatari).

>>141477019

>Not as accepted as somewhere say like France, Spain, Canada, America, etc. Where those places are more used to it.

I've had the opposite experience. The lack of knowledge about it means most people are less prejudiced against it and will at least question it. Once they're told it's 'adult' animation they seem to be reasonably accepting. Obviously if it's got lolis on the front you've got an issue.

On a related note the UK might not have animation but there's a pretty major love of western animation here. The Simpsons, in particular, has been on Channel 4 nightly for fuck knows how long. Why this doesn't translate to anime I don't know. Likely the language barrier.

Miliband himself was a fine man he was just assfucked by his party trying to force him into the model of Blair. Frankly that sounds ideal as long as he's allowed to be himself.

He also produced some top quality memes and I wouldn't mind seeing them again.

Of course the BBC would refuse to license anything with lolis or even mildly 'questionable' content so the channel would be shit.

Funny you mention the Simpsons being on Channel 4 when they used to show Fist of the North Star on it years ago. Not so sure how popular it was when airing though. I wish they'd show more anime films outside of Ghibli but Film4 used to show Satoshi Kon's work if I recall, mostly Paprika but I can't remember if they showed his other films.

Generally I don't like Waterstones, but the Cambridge one is great. I got all of Biomega and some Sidonia from there. I figured Cambridge had high enough autist levels to warrant a large (ish) manga section.

Most the people I personally know who dig anime are black, which makes me laugh considering who racist the nips are.

My fave anime are NGE, GITS, Guyver, Angel Cop, Wicked City, SEL and pretty much any 80s/90s /cyb/ anime.

BBC is remaking A Midsummer Nights Dream,
Lets look at the changes.
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/7130863/BBC-Sex-Up-Shakespeare-Lesbian-kiss-and-racy-gay-romance-set-to-spice-up-the-Bard.html
>The re-write means that Theseus, King of Athens, dies of a heart attack instead of living which frees his bride Hippolyta, played by Eleanor Matsuura, to fall into the arms of fairy queen Titania, which whom she shares a sensual kiss.
>Theseus’s character is also rewritten to be that of a Nazi-style dictator, while Hippolyta-bizarrely-starts the drama wearing a Hannibal Lecter style mask and a strait jacket.
>The other storylines that have been switched around include Demetrius (Paapa Essiedu) falling in love temporarily with Hermia’s (Prisca Bakare) lover Lysander (Matthew Tennyson), while Flute (Fisayo Akinade) ends the play dressed as a woman on the arm of a handsome soldier.
>“It’s very male-female, male-female, so I wanted to have a man with a man, a man who was dressed as a woman with a man, and a woman with a woman
But why?
>because it’s 2016, so that’s the world now.
Current year, goyim, it's current year!
>“I wanted children to watch this and see the real world in the middle of this fantasy.”
Never too young to push your propaganda on kids.
I could list othyer articles, but this covered the most changes.

BBC are utter trash, everything the produce is biased as fuck. They are probably airing pro EU adverts as we speak.

>Where do you live? I'm generally interested to hear where all the UK based 4chan /pol/ racists grew up. I don't think anyone who grew up in a city would say this shit, it reeks of little englander from home counties stench.

Whilst I myself am not exactly /pol/ you are clearly a sheltered little shit if you think the countryside is all racist hicks or the cities all 'educated' urbanites.

Hell areas of Manchester were voting for the BNP as a result of the rape gang coverup. People know when this shit is going on. To deny that there is and was a coverup is to deny objective fact also.

Now of course this doesn't make all muslims rapists outside of the minds of a /pol/ack but still.

I don't see anime on BBC being a thing ,seems surreal when you think about it. I remember when they did some documentary with Jonathan Ross where he went to Japan and enjoyed it a lot, one scene I recall is when he browsed some hentai on his phone. Pretty funny. I'd love to see him and Louis Theroux do a joint anime and manga documentary. Would need to be in similar style to his Weird Weekends.

>>141477194

Now I definitely remember seeing something along those lines, except they showed an advert for Fate and Hunter x Hunter on Crunchy Roll I believe.

I think any UK fag can agree that watching anime is seen as taboo here. There's little to no publicity, cons or merchandise outside 10 or 12 dvd box sets at a local HMV or piss storeCEX. Even those who discuss anime in public are cautious about it and that usually only takes place in college/uni and stops at age 23. Like I said before, anime is popular here, but it's almost so hidden from our shitty chav-culture that it's invisible from society.

London is a weird place, it both encapsulates huge stereotypes about the UK but represents so little of it. Maybe it's national pride but I'd say London and New York are easily the two most important cities in the world. With that in mind it's understandable why so many tourists go there.

Anime wise though, Planetes is my fav. Also in Universities there's always a anime clubs and stuff. Even in my small town there is a comicbook/ anime shop, it's alright.

Anime Central was great. Think it was back in 2006, 2007.

Got me into a lot of great anime. Got to watch Ghost in the Shell SAC, Planetes, Wolf's Rain, .hack//Sign, Escaflowne. Even got to rewatch stuff like Fullmetal Alchemist, the early Bleach episodes and Cowboy Bebop.

Was quite gutted when the plug got pulled. I live in quite a rural area so my internet connection was dog shit, couldn't really stream as much as I wanted.

Maybe another channel will come along, who knows. I think with stuff like Netflix and online streaming there isn't really a need for that kind of thing though.

The problem with Anime in Britian is the fact not many people know about it here. Around 6 years ago when I showed an anime (think it was bleach) to people at school they thought it was pokemon and I was childish for watching this kind of thing. From my experience most brits think any anime is for kids because of the crap we get on Cartoon Network. In recent years however it has become more known as several retailers are now selling manga volumes and anime DVD/BDs. As well as several anime conventions in London every year.

The one time I see jobs that are ignoring these factors, and they include being able to drive. Fuck cars, stupid overpriced trash. Cars arent too bad to be fair, it's just the insurance that comes along with it that makes it too expensive for me to drive.

Thats why my eyes are on England. I dont want a longterm job of factory stuff, but my goal is to get a factory job for a few montsh, enough to cover the cost of driving and then I have more options.

They wont give a fuck either, because they wont be the ones dying in a bike on car crash.

I don't even try to meet up or talk to people about anime, so I can't really say what the general opinion is it in London. Seems there are quite a few anons here who have a better idea than me though. For manga, I either rely on Amazon to deliver it or see what I come across in Forbidden Planet, near Tottenham Court Road station.

My favourite anime is Rozen Maiden

>William Adams (24 September 1564 – 16 May 1620), known in Japanese as Miura Anjin (䞉浊按針: "the pilot of Miura"), was an English navigator who in 1600 was the first of his nation to reach Japan. I've been so busy hiding my powerlevel that I only found out about Minamicon a couple of years ago despite how old it is. It seems fairly big but also entirely invisible because I've never seen it advertised anywhere, not even by word of mouth.
There's a few videos with a Southampton Waterstones packed with cosplayers, don't knkw what that was.
There's also this shop in the town centre that sells general geek stuff, it has anime art books (e.g the guy who does the FF concept art) and a lot of manga (mostly mainstream stuff). I used to think the little Chinese/Japanese shop in Marlands was cool but all of the stock in there are literal Chinese bootlegs/horrendous quality, it's so tacky.

My university (Portsmouth) has it's own anime society. We also have a bunch of good conventions like MCM London and Birmingham, Kitacon and Amecon. It's definitely popular here, at a guess I'd say just as popular as the US in proportion to the population.

>Made me question the purpose of a club just to watch anime.
Simple enough. People who watch anime feel like isolated wierdos who can't discuss their interests with anyone unless they luck out and find another fan. So anime clubs exist to draw in people that share that interest.

It's just that real life isn't K-On. You can't have a club where all you do is sit around and talk and drink tea, you have to do 'activities', even though activities are an anathema to most people like that. So what you get is incredibly awkward as a result.
>>

I'm from Southampton. I can confirm everyone who claims to enjoy the medium only watch the typical mainstream shit.

>>
>>141480254
The only reason is to make friends with other anime fans. It will always be more efficient to watch stuff by yourself, you get to pick what to watch and pause to piss and all that. So if the people are mainstream weeb neckbeards, anime socs are pointless.

Unless it shows currently airing stuff, I guess. I tried to get the soc at my uni to show some currently airing stuff, but they refused.

People you'd want to know hide their power level, the rest are the most insufferable cringey dub watching narutard weebs you'll ever have the displeasure of meeting. However anime is surprisingly more widespread than you'd think. The vast majority of millennials are fully aware of it and a good portion watch some casually; I think that it's just not something that's talked about, maybe it's because of stigma.

Until you hit uni most people view it as a kids thing since all cartoons made in the west are primarily aimed at kids.

all locally produced programs have been shafted through the roof by political correctness because we have to include all the fucking immigrant minorities in them. Pic with an added paki would be an accurate depiction of modern British TV.

>How the fuck they went from that to all the shit they did in WW2 I dont understand.
The short version is that the military became more influential and propagandized young men with romanticized bushido nonsense so they could build up their army.

And the IJA itself was extremely brutal towards and contemptuous of their own soldiers. The use of harsh physical punishment against an enlisted man was considered routine, many of those men were so brutalised by this treatment they regularly took out their frustrations on civilians and PoWs. Rations were also so short that they had to loot from the locals. The Japanese placed almost superstitious belief in the idea that brutality and spartan conditions made stronger and more badass soldiers, though in reality it just produced malnourished thugs.

There was probably also some measure of inherent historical cultural inferiority complex towards the Chinese.

But who needs anime when we've mastered the comedy panel show format and documentaries If you are american, look up "comedy"

Surrey anon here. Its relatively popular. In school in my experience there is generally a large percentage of kids that have watched anime of some kind.

Its hard to really get a sense of its popularity since it is pretty underground here still but I think it is rather popular all things considered. When big events like the Expo in London happen you can see fans as passionate as any from around the world happily venture out onto the tube to get to the venue. The amount of Tube maps I have seen vandalised where "Bank Station" is turned into "Bankai Station" beggers belief.

I just think that people enjoy it on their own terms. There is no loud and obvious sub-culture like there is in the US but the fandom is there and it is large.

I do see where you are coming from. The train scene at the end is supossed to show him saying "well thats that, time to get on with life." I think the best hope people have might be passive displays that you need to be in on to get. Once I saw a guy with a Gurren Brigade logo on his hoodie. A friend of mine had a shirt with what looked like a series of random coloured shapes, unless you'd seen Code Geass, in which case it was clearly the coloured portions of the zero costume.

Subtle stuff like this that doesn't out you but can still advertise your interests. This, I would like to see more of.

> All Rotherham taught me, was that America was 100% right to break away, and the 2nd ammendment is the best thing ever made as police cant be trusted to protect you or your family.

Sounds like something to stand up and fight for. That's no reason to give up.
>>
>>141482843
It was the CPS and the local council that fucked over Rotherham, anon.

At least do your fucking homework.

America is funny because it's so polarized that in some places it's actually worse.

I live like 30 minutes from Hull (in a town known for it's cunts). We got nothing but chavs around here. Infact, the area I live in is so shitty and chavvy channel 4 made a TV show about it.

Damn, your chavs still listen to techno? Down in good ol' Soton we're pretty Americanised and they listen to god awful trap/dubstep/with someone 'rapping' to the music. I knew a chavvy weeb, though he stuck to the shit from his childhood, the first Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon.

I would assume mainlders are poor, HK is the only part of China that's not a polluted shithole iirc, so I assume all the rich people live there.
Also I know from articles that when mainlanders arrive in HK they shit on trains. I seriously wouldnt expect wealth from a mainlander.
I dont know much about Chinese stuff, but I find them both enjoyable enough. I would like China more if it had more writing. I mean you have a few classic novels, but it's not really much.
But aesthetics wise, I think both are great.

>>141482931
>Eastern Europe traffics young girls
I doubt there is a government coverup for that. Granted I havent looked into them, but my point was they wouldnt ignore crimes becuas of the idea doing their job may offend someone. Tahts what bothers me, they didnt do their job becuase of a meaningless lable "racist". Thats why this country is fucked.
>>141482966
CPS fucking up doesnt excuse the police. Especially when some officers then fucked the victims.

>>141482936
It's too far gone. I bet we wont even quit the EU. The UK is fucked, and in a democracy all you can do is vote. My mother thinks Labour are terrible but keeps voting them saying
>I dont want conservative to win and I dont like Nigel Farrage
She admits she dislikes Corbyn and Labour but keeps voting them. Things will never change becuase so many people just vote for the same old shit.

Is it self-racism that I want them to go away back to China? Their accents make me cringe and people assume my parents are loud, obnoxious tourist-types.
Wtf with the shitting on trains? (... Hanfu are so much prettier looking than those fetishised Qipao/cheongsam, but yeah, China aesthetic is cool)

Lol my fucking idiot weeaboo friend said she was going to go to the prom in a motherfucking kimono, but turned up in a seriously ill-fitting cheongsam..

There are translation communities. Gravity Tales does martial arts related novels for example, there's some good shit on there.

Oh boy, I love being able to pretend to be convincingly japanese to clueless anime fans!... with a 10% chance of being mistaken for mongolian.

Anime seems to be popular in geek circles, if they know what doctor who is, they probably have a friend of a friend who watches One Piece.
>>
>>141483472
Greens are self satisfied hippies. Lib Dems seem closest to sane, but nobody every votes for them because they never get anywhere because no-one votes for them. Their reputation being fucked by the coalition doesn't help.

No, it's a know fact mainland Chinese are not nice people, poor manners, immoral and generally not nice. Not entirely their fault given the environment they live in.

Other CHinese are ashamed of them, and I cant blame them.

>>
>>141483635
The thing is its not even a farmer accent or anything as rough as teeside its actually well formed english but certain phrases always crack them up.

>>141483631
If you are in an area with immigrants everyone hates them so little PC culture. Universities and developed places without immigrants are often pretty bad for it. Combine the 2 and its just fucking horrible. You literally cant put on a French Chinese or Indian accent without being accused of being a racist bigot.

PC culture can't really settle well here when our entire society runs on banter.
It's like thinking muslims can take over when our economy and social life is fuelled purely by going down to the local pub.

London is an awful place to live in. I lived there as a kid and the place is polluted, truly a suffocating, callous urban jungle where people are too apathetic to care about anything or rock the boat about racial issues.

On-topic shit: my little cousin is a pathetic, literally depressed shut-in who goes on his computer 9 hours a day despite school, who is obsessed with guns and Kancolle. He likes the anime I like, though, that's probably the only thing going for him. And that he's not old enough to grow a neckbeard.
>>
>>141483762
There is so much regional dialect people can get pretty fucking confused, this is why I pity foreign students. I had a Chinese friend at a uni and the amount of times I had to rephrase things or explain what someone meant where rather often her cute face made it worth it though.
