Chronos fucked up the damn cycle with his little Chromatus bullshit, while Old Man Maxwell prevented the conditions needed to complete the trial from happening. All Origin did was stay in a locked mechanism and suck the Miasma out of the souls before reincarnation. Assign blame to those who fucked the situation up.

I actually liked Rose as a character more than Alicia. She brought life to an otherwise boring party and initiated actual fun conversations and lifted the energy. Then Zaveid joined and the party FINALLY felt comfy and interesting.
I just hate Roses playstyle and much prefer to play as Alicia.

It's kind of funny how I played Symphonia and didn't really care for Colette, and now two years later I find her quite adorable. The OVA did a great job making her look cute, particularly in the zombie state brought about by the Cruxis Crystal.

They picked some good girls to be idols and the designs for them were pretty nice, was pleasantly surprised to discover there was even a somewhat enjoyable story behind it. Tales of Link seems pretty good for its alternate costume art and even some of its original characters.

On the downside it really doesn't hide the fact that you have to pay if you want a particular character or even good characters, otherwise you can be waiting a while. Kind of didn't like either how it seems like they always have some limited time event going on, though I suppose that is good incentive to get people playing, it worked on me for a bit.

Best overall would be Vesperia PS3, the translation is available now I hear.
Fighting is a lot of fun, and the characters carry the story so hard it's nearly enjoyable without the gameplay.

If you come to Tales for the fighting, give Xillia 1&2 a shot. Play both, X2 is the far superior one Battle-wise since some lagging was fixed. Just don't spam Lightning too much.
The fights are quick-paced, challenging, but also rewarding, since the slightest effort you put into dodging stuff can be the difference between having to go back to "hard" from "unknown" or kicking the boss' ass.

Graces F deserves a mention, the fights are very different in style since no airgame, but still quite intense nonetheless.

If you want to stick to handheld, try Hearts for the Vita.

Team Destiny has a complexity addiction in battle systems, Team Symphonia goes for simple beat the tar out of the enemy style. Xillia was a good start, as Team Destiny got certain complexity and forced a more technical type of gameplay, while the face beating fun of Team Symphonia still shone through. Zestiria went full Destiny, with very little Symphonia influence. Graces is a fucking mess of complexity compared to Xillia and Zestiria returns to the same fucking mess and adds more to it. I disagree. I think Tales' format works fantastically with meshing button masher and more complex combat in roots with its action RPG style.

Graces' system I never thought was that confusing. At most all you had to understand was basic movement, dodging enemies, basic button functions, and that CC was responsible for your action count. That's all I ever understood and I got by just fine. I seriously don't understand how people find it difficult.

That said, I think Graces (and I hear Hearts R) are the only games in the series where action game depth is in any sense truly interesting. That's not to say the gameplay for the rest is bad though, it's just that I largely also disagree on Destiny having a complexity addiction. The franchise was never responsible for any systems that were say, Devil May Cry levels.

Overall Tales has still managed to retain some very samey gameplay, where you don't need to learn much at all past the tutorial, and the rest comes naturally. The more technical things you want to pull off, if possible depending on the game, is just a nice bonus that happens to be there if you want to do cool stunts.

The problem I have with Graces and Zestiria is the fact that better equipment is not easy to discern or is downright impossible to maintain understanding of, respectively. The title system that Team Destiny has is beautiful and well done in Graces yet horrid in Zestiria. The main sticking point in Zestiria is that skills are chained to the fucking equipment. Having to think fifteen moves in advance in crafting a weapon is NOT a good feature. And don't get me started on the fact that battle actions are one size fits all, with skill gates out the fucking ass to unlock them.

The worst part is that you can completely ignore the skills system and not be any worse off. Just fusing equipment drops a few times is enough to cheese the game on Chaos mode. Yeah it's cool to get a high skill stack and suddenly every attack you block restores your health, but by that point you can already destroy any battle. It's not so much about the contents (The Pokemon Center finally opened up a website for orders in the US and such a few years back.) it's more the principal of feeling like equals and not inferior because we're not Nipponese.

I also question it based on the possible economic advantages it could bring, for example I imagine sales of Pokemon merchandise in the US could at the very least come close to those in Japan based on the difference in population size. Square Enix I could also possibly see, but a Tales store at this point is probably not feasible.

It's also a general critique of the stupid shit Japanese companies sometimes do, which has had disastrous consequences in the past when the Japanese branch of a company assumes full control and completely ignores what has been working the American or European branches before and makes no attempt to heed their advice.

It's pretty pathetic that it took Baba going to a convention in France (And possibly more likely flagging sales at home) for Namco to wake up and realize that as far as Tales went they had been repeatedly shitting the bed in the West with their ineffectual tactics and sometimes insulting treatment. It's no surprise that Symphonia is one of the best known and well received Tales games in the West, to my knowledge only being all right in the minds of Japanese fans, since marketing for it was taken out of Namco's bumbling hands by Nintendo.

Truly a lot of this is not even me since I really only got into the series relatively recently. It's the result of listening to a friend who has been a fan since Destiny recounting how bad Namco shit on him and others over the years.

I had a subscription to Nintendo Power starting at some point around the release of the Gamecube in the US and I think up until the end. That I think is how I came to at least recognize Symphonia since it and DoaNW got advertising. I picked up Symphonia when it was on Gamecube as a Player's Choice title, but I only played a little of it.

It was when a friend brought the series up around the time that Symphonia Chronicles was being released that I gave it another shot and really fell in love with the gameplay, characters, skits, and other stuff. Afterwards I ended up getting every Tales that was available for current systems (Bar Vesperia since I don't own a 360) and every Tales that has come out since. Admittedly however the only one I played any more of was Abyss for the 3DS. Something I would like to rectify so that I may experience all the other characters I found charming from clips I've seen or things I've read. Finishing Zesteria before Berseria comes out would be nice simply so I can recognize the connections between the two.

I can't really say I've noticed any increase in advertising on Namco's part in the West, but they seem a lot more open and willing to communicate with the Western fanbase, even catering in some areas such as Zesteria on PS4 and both it and Symphonia on PC (Though admittedly the latter was a mess), plus Tales of Link. Though I have a feeling this is because they want to supplement or make up for lost sales in Japan rather than good will.

I think a lot of it came from jealously actually, because at the time the Japanese made games made up most of the market ,and it was still growing. So some jealous American developers may have claimed that JRPGs were dead in the West to scare away Nip developers.

As weeb as it sounds I think Jap games are just better than western ones. I've never had an interest in Angry Face McBuff dude or games that just lack any artistic variety. EPIC!!! music doesn't appeal to me in the slightest nor does a FPS. Not saying there are no good Western games nor all JP games are perfect, but I just find Jap ones are better put together as a whole and in number.
