Honestly, this show feels really pseudo-intellectual.

While this episode wasn't as cringeworthy as the previous one, it felt pretty barebones in terms of relevance to the greater scheme of things and made the antagonist seem very inept for an elite GRU agent (just like the British last episode).

Most likely. As much as I would like more mature anime for mature viewers like myself, anime's bread and butter is otakubait. Though fujobait is starting to make a big push into the industry as well, at the end of the day it's the same shit with a different name, and won't be anywhere near what you would call "adult". The sad truth is that mature shows don't usually make much money, so it's more of a labor of love on the part of the studio making it than it is an actual money making venture. A lot of studios go by the tried and true method of "churn out half a dozen shit adaptations or pandering shows so we can make one show we actually want to create", and even then the shows they actually want to make are oftentimes not adult ones, but rather more of the same.

This is like the Rakugo of this season. The best anyone can do to besmirch this is minor nitpickery, it's really cozy and it helps that this espionage stuff isn't boring. Honestly, the first episode was the toughest to get through because of the internal headgames but it's been great ever since.
