I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that the original one (surprisingly) heve never being sold, but then again it could be one of the countless Internet's unsourced facts about Eva.
>>
>>141323610
There are lots of reproductions, "celuclub" or something like that, but they are the same few designs. Supposedly original cels were never sold, but there was quite a thriving market for them years ago on yahoo.jp. Of course if you found two the same that would be a dead giveaway.

Do you have any idea how many cels get made for one episode of a TV show? They don't have the room for all that shit. They either put the important/iconic ones on display somewhere, destroy them, or some staff members gather them up and just sell them. Even Disney does it.

You can usually tell it's real if it's not in pristine condition and isn't cropped in like a traced screencap from the actual show would be. Like >>141324196

Shows animated by Toei in particular used ink that yellowed with age, so ones like >>141328581 are obvious to tell apart.

>>
>>141329312
>cels are the frames used to make the anime aren't they?

Yes, back then. Now traditional animation frames are drawn and colored using art tablets like wacom cintiq so no need for cel screens. The genga or sketches like are sometimes done with pencils like >>141324305 and then scanned to do the lineart and coloring.

This is true for all traditional animation worldwide, not only anime.

>I'll never get collecting cels
It's nice to have something that's a real piece of what you love, not just a reproduction or merchandise. Sort of the difference between collecting guns and collecting guns that saw combat. Also they make nice decoration, you can have 1 poster or 20 cels on your wall, and because they have simple designs they aren't flashy or tacky like other anime merch you can get.

>I personally collect flags.
I certainly hope you don't mean 4chan flag icons.
>>
>>141334034

Have fun either moving to Japan and living in sweatshop conditions for years before they let you do key animation, or becoming a slave to calarts and drawing the occasional spongebob or steven universe frame once a year.
>>
>>141332610
something with the way they layered their images?
I'm not too sure but I remember learning about something tomino had them do with the lines

>>141334191

>>
>>141332443

the computer literally works the same as painting in cels. In fact it's better and faster because you can abuse the paintbucket.

The fact that anime nowadays use less shading tones and highlights it's just that times change, even though it could be done easily. Clean drawings have become more popular.

Lately I see a trend of making soft shaded anime like Prision School and Apollon, and gradients like Dagashi Kashi.

They are actual cels from famous anime, which will pretty much get you pussy on tap whenever you mention it to any bitches, and that is why you're jealous, kid.
>>
>>141331832
>any idea
For a decent show, without too many stills, about 15 000 including tweenies and OP/ED, which is a few boxes of cels. Even though this actually isn't enough for quite fluent motion budget restrictions mean that often cels are used repeatedly / creatively and stills are employed, reducing the number to maybe 5000 or so. A really high budget show might employ many, many more though.
A few boxes every episode... well, they might keep a few recent shows in storage for remastering, but realistically most cels will be sold or trashed.

I got it in a trade at comic shop in 2001. He was going out of business and we were quasi friends. I remember watching the vcd that went along with it way back in the day. I really need to find a way to get that cd copied to disk.

If I ever take it to Chesapeake collectable or antiques roadshow, I'm sure it would be way more valuable together than separate.

I'm sure it's gotta be some historical thing in underground animation back in the day.

Computers are also increasingly used for tweening and compositing, which accounts for much of the increase of technical quality these days. (Whether artistic quality has increased is a matter of opinion. I really love 80s character designs.)

>>
>>141366162
It's about precision and feel, I guess. Both have different kind of 達成感 depending on animators.
Computer are still use for refining outlines and in-betweens and for compositing.
>>
>>141366959
tweening is an old terms for in-between, anon. That's before flash even existed.
>>
>>141366959
They are. I don't know what he's talking about, except maybe he talks about when a single drawing "slides" on the screen.

Or maybe Ping Pong and the likes use tweening I'm not sure, since they are on Flash.
>>
>>141367057
Well yeah, but in this case he meant the computer doing the inbetween work rather than being drawn by hand. As far as I was aware other than a few series like ping pong most inbetweens were drawn by hand.
>>
>>141367147
There are companies that are using computers to do in-betweens. You can totally find any animation wares besides flash to draw in-betweens with graphic tablets. You can even use ToonBoom for that.
>>
>>141367320
Is that bad?
>>
>>141366959
Tweening is whatever method you use (by hand, computer, combination of both) to draw in-between frames.
If you're looking at a high-fps action scene, it's probably CG or computer-assisted tweening, since high-fps hand-drawn tweening is too costly and time-consuming to be practical in most cases.
To save costs animation by hand can be drawn at 2x, which means ‘repeat every frame’ or ‘run at half fps’. And that's half of 24, not half of sixty. Not everything is drawn at 2x, but this gives you an impression of how hard it is to get high framerates using hand-drawn animation.
>>
>>141367998
No. Unless the animator become lazy and use motion tweening graph or puppet models.
>>
>>141368318
Interesting. Do you know any examples of high fps actions scenes that are hand-drawn with no short cuts? I'm curious as to what it looks like.
>>
>>141368550
Disney 2d movies usually goes up to 12-24fps.
Anime are usually done in 8-12 fps.
>>
>>141368550
24fps scenes generally don't happen. Frame step through an action scene you like sometime and you'll see it's typically only a new image every other frame even for movies.

Ghibli films animate on ones sometimes. Akira and Redline have moments, too. If you want specific scenes from random sources no one will be able to help you, but the money shots from high budget shit can reach 24fps on occasion.

It's highly unlikely. The only legit cel I'm aware of sold on Manda years ago for almost $4,000. There have been a few others probably, but again that was almost a decade ago.

If you see an Eva cel, and it doesn't look like its from the Cellu-Club set, it's almost certainly not legit. This is all for the original TV run mind you, I think EoE is slightly different. I believe there might be some legit cels out there for EoE, don't quote me on that though.

No those are still almost certainly fake. Eva had 6 hand painted reproduction cels that were released (as a part of the Cellu-Club series) and all of them had a GAINAX seal of authenticity on them, those clearly don't nor are they any of the 6 cels from the series, so they're definitely fake as well.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind a fake cel, for the right price naturally, as most of them look pretty damn good assuming it's actually paint on the cel and not just ink from a machine.

>>
>>141381474
Lot of people talking about the eva cels being fake. Which ones do you have?
>>
>>141381491
To the best of my knowledge, no Eva production cels were ever released to the public. The reason was that Gainax decided to keep the cels for future remastering. Because fans clamoured for them and Gainax smelt money they copied a few and sold those. I don't know what happened to the original cels; they might have been trashed but I think it's more likely that Gainax still has them in storage and given that Eva is still big, they'll probably keep them around just in case they want to do a high-resolution remastering in the future for which the film isn't good enough.
>>
>>141378813
No? What's the full story? Is it in the archive?
>>
>>141374486
Cels are notoriously easy to fake. The whole point of the cel process is to make it possible and cost-effective to produce thousands of frames with a consistent look. And with all studios using pretty much the same materials, even an expert couldn't really say for sure unless the fake was really badly done.

You could maybe tell a fake by forensic analysis of the paints/inks used compared to those of a known original. But if you don't have a known original then that won't help you either.

Basically, if you have a DVD/BD of the anime then you can capture any frame and from that produce a fake douga and a fake cel. You can count the cels used in the cut and then work out the cel number and probably the layer too to make it look even more authentic.

Of course if you see two identical cels then at least one of them is fake, but there's really no advantage for a forger to do the same cel over so they'll probably take a complete cut and do all the cels in it in one sitting so that the paint colours are consistent.

Another thing often said is that cels with the characters' eyes closed are more likely to be genuine because cels with eyes open generally fetch higher prices, but who's to say there isn't some reverse psychology going on there? Maybe the forger is more likely to do eyes closed cels because they are more likely to be believed to be genuine.

At the end of the day, there is no knowing whether a "genuine production cel" is real or not, unless you actually went to the studio yourself and bought it. All that matters, like with any purchase, is if you're happy with it for the money you paid.
>>
>>141382520
Even forensic analysis isn't going to help very much, because of common cel materials and inks. And you'd need an expert to tell – good luck finding one outside Japan. And not enough documentation remains, so unless an entire production run of cells has been sold and many of them are available for comparison, often even people who worked at the studio don't know which materials were originally used in the first place.
>>
>>141382720
>common cel materials and inks
I'm not sure how anime studios handled things, but Western studios generally mixed up large batches of paints for each colour and shade used so as to ensure consistency across a season or a movie. I guess that wouldn't work though with the outsourcing done in Japan, so maybe they just used stock colours and used Pantone references or the like to get consistency.

Here is three of my favorite out of about 20 Eva cels.

And do I know if they are fake or not, well these are no Picaso or Rembrant paintings and I have had the majority of these for many years so no I do not think these are fake. There are many rumours about the lack of releasing these cels by Gainex but the majority of cels that are out there, apparently most were taken by staff over time. Its not like there is one or two cels per scene, there are many cels that make the scenes but Gainex probably has the main key cels locked away. Also if you notice, many of the Eva cels are either from the first few episodes and in the middle but not many else where in the series.

That's the whole point. Each production cel is a one-off original and is different from every other cel because why would they go to the expense of making a second identical cel?
>>
>>141382818
I can see that working for a film, but for a television series? I doubt it, and I doubt it would be necessary. Anime is a big industry, ink manufacturers can sell lots of ink, so if you're producing an anime, chances are you're able to find inks you like.
I've seen a documentary about, granted, a German animation studio and even there they were inking straight out of the little paint bottles, which looked exactly like those you can buy in a hobby shop. They weren't using custom mixes.
>>
>>141382969
That wouldn't be a good representation of authenticity. They kept these things in good shape, assuming that's a legit production cel, and all of the previous owners also took good care of them then they could easily look the same as they did 25 years ago.

Yeah, but I know it's said multiple times in the thread already but I would feel very stupid paying $100+ for a $2 fake and I doubt being in Japan makes it any more safe.

I avoided cels before because I had no money and now that I kinda do I avoid them too because they went way up in price since digital paint took over and I have no clue how to tell fakes. It's totally new territory for me and I hate feeling like a clueless idiot, especially when it's clueless idiots who get scalped the most.
>>
>>141383794

Probably. If I was a cell painter who'd lost my job because of digital paint, I could earn much more per cel by making fakes than I ever got making genuine ones.
>>
>>141383920
That kinda defies the point of collecting cels for their value as something physically used in the show then, no? It just means you're rich enough to spend hundreds or more on a pretty picture that just accidentally may be a genuine production cel.

Is that supposed to be bad or anything? Normally, when you work on animation, you have to draw key frames out, so I'm sure this movie isn't any different. There is a couple of art books out for Redline that I would love to get my hands on, but a production cel would be even better to have.
>>
>>141384451
Read up on what a cel is. Drawn keyframes =/= cels.

Since this is a chill and mature thread, I'm going to go ahead and ask it here.

I've been extremely busy with work for about a year, has anything come out recently that's worth watching? The last season I followed was the one that had Ninja Slayer.

If you liked Ninja Slayer watch Uchuu Patrol Luluco.

>their value as something physically used in the show
That would be about a dollar, maybe two. After all, that's what studio's are paying the animators. The rest is rarity value.

I have one more thing to show you, this one I got back in 2003 when I bothered the poor man during his spare time (he was outside on a smoke break).

His booth was always surrounded so I was unable to get an autograph this way, but even in his spare time Urushihara was kind enough to draw Teeta for me.
>>
>>141384725
Which had a $ 58 M budget. For a box-office hit worth six times as much, this is acceptable. For a television anime episode, it isn't.
>>
>>141384898
And that was in 80s bux. It takes an army of animators to take no shortcuts.
>>
>>141384983
>It takes an army of animators to take no shortcuts.
And a fitting number of casualties. Long hours, eye strain and RSI abound.
>>
>>141384983
Yup. In today's money that would be $ 117 M: more than twice as much.
By the way, do you know about the Dip in the movie? Well, I've heard some animation studios used to clean cels and reuse them to save money. (A similar thing happened to lots of old television programmes: the tapes got reused. It always amazes me that we do these things over and over and nobody thinks ‘hey, maybe this might be worth a lot or become irreplaceable’.)

That's what my father used to think. Three years now since he's kicked the bucket and I'm still cleaning the house out of all sorts of collectible shit he's amassed.

Obviously some of his collector's mentality has rubbed off on me so I didn't just trash all stuff I didn't care about, but I would need another lifetime and a half to really understand the value of it, stamps and coins being the easiest. So I'm just doing a semi-half-assed job trying to value it and not sell it at too much of a loss.

tl;dr don't do it to your kids and don't collect too much shit, thanks for reading my blog.

In fact the cels you're talking about had been rescanned once for the Laserdisc release (which, up until the BD release, was the best possible image quality for Evangelion) and have probably been transferred to Khara by now since Khara now own Evangelion and are putting out BDs of the TV series.

That being said, I know that back in the 90s Animators did not refrain from stealing cels to sell them and earn cash on the side.
>>
>>141389758
I don't think they rescanned the cels. The quality of the existing film should be good enough even for 1080.
Redoing from the original cels and backgrounds is a lot of work, they won't do it unless the original film is unworkable for the new medium.
>>
>>141334562
You can find some things on ebay still
>>
As for douga and genga, would it be any easier to tell if they're fake or not? A couple I've been eyeing seem to be done on their company paper. Says their studio on the corner as well as time and frame.
>>
>>141333962
Wait, they redraw the linework digitally? I thought they redraw/clean up traditionally and then just scan it and color it using those lines.
>>
>>141391416
Both actually. The draw it traditionally, then colour it on the computer method came first. Even then you don't need cel anymore though: you can just draw it on paper.

The first panty and stocking artbook is hilarious because first there's Nishigari's all concept work over panty and stocking and how he kept developing them overtime and they're all quite nicely drawn even though they're sketches.

Then at the end there's Yoshinari's fucking amazing sketches

but in the middle we have Imaishi, who really doesn't give a fuck when sketching.
>>
>>141390659
iirc the TV tapes of Evangelion were pretty exhausted, there was a digital rework made in Germany that blew up the colors and was used as base for subsequent releases but the image quality of that is completely different than the LD release, so the alleged rescan of the cels sounds pretty likely desu
>>
>>141391297
Recent douga and genga were reproduced or reprinted by the company and they are official goods. They are less pricey than cels, but it depends on the company itself. Hibike Eupho's genga posted here are sold in packs. Each pack contains 10 reprinted genga and is sold for 2000 yen each (tax excluded).
>>
>>141391689
I remember when the NGE BD box came out the rippers and encoders were bitching a lot about shitty grain and coloring inconsistencies between episodes. From that it doesn't sound like they re-shot it.

It's not like the master film copies get run down from use, they're not meant to be used but stored, so the only deterioration is from the film medium itself (especially if stored in shitty conditions). But you can still scan it in 4K easily and work from there, which I hope is what they did rather than just settling on 2K transfer.

I wonder if anyone has a cel/key frame of the scene in Golden boy where he watch an animator draw a lewd key frame.

Not exactly a cell, though I'd give a kidney for one with that frame >>141377774 (even if they're not the originals, as long as it has a Gainax/Khara seal it's ok for me), but I saw an autographed Asuka over here, so I guess it's ok for me to show this too?

So would the originals actually be done in pencil or does that only apply to older series? Being reprints, I can see why they'd be less expensive.

Most anime genga and douga are done in pencils, even now. They would outline them in shiage/cleanup stage before filling in the colors. Only few companies rely on animation software to do douga.
