They appear to not have enough SoL footage to actually put them in the preview. So it looks like we will have combat.
>>
>>141203751
I think they are finally trying to drop the pretense of no combat happening, since they've already done it for the four previous episodes.

That or they're actually still fooling us with most of the episode focusing on relaxation time on the Harekaze.

Who the fuck knows? 5 episodes in this looks like another one of those Aniplex backed shows where how it's being marketed seems to be the biggest consideration for the project over what actually happens in the show and how it develops. They probably don't even know themselves yet and the show is starting to seem like it's throwing every checklist dart it possibly can at the board to see what sticks and if it can still rope in the GuP audience. What this show really needed was somebody behind it that actually cared enough about the genre and hammering out a clear sort of genre and concept appeal of it's own like GuP and Arpeggio had but nope. I just hope GuP and/or Arpeggio can manage to land another season soon. IMO it's probably actually hurting it's preorders early on because any potential moeblob fans don't want to buy a show where their waifu might get killed and military fans don't just want to buy a show where that barely gets any consideration in the long run so hiding the premise keeps both from pre-ordering early. It's not like it doesn't have potential, it's just kind of badly marketed and confusing people

I've only played GalCiv 2 but the difference is that you can actually control your ships during battles in SotS.
The semi-randomized nature of the tech tree also keeps things fresh enough.
The downsides though are that diplomacy is extremely simplistic compared to other 4Xs and certain DLC races cause memory leaks if they're ingame long enough.

>The Musashi wankery this episode when it was in
reality a useless overdeveloped resource sink

A modern cruiser, which is what it seemed the boy's school ships were using, could have taken the Musashi out from way out of her effective range with missiles.

>Misaki abandoning her entire crew, the people who she's been given the responsibility to keep alive, to save one person on another ship.

She is unfit to lead. Even Tama would be a better captain.

>Shooting the Musashi's shells out of the air

I can suspend my disbelief to a certain point, but I'm supposed to believe that Tama was able to accurately predict the trajectory of a shell moving at over a mile per second and adjust the Harekaze's firing angle to intercept it in under 10 seconds using nothing but binoculars? I'm sorry, but even a modern computer couldn't do that let alone an autistic child.
>>
>>141223321
>Harekaze wouldn't even be afloat!

By all rights, they shouldn't be. The Reichboat should have sent them to bottom without trouble, and the submarine crew didn't seem to be trying.

Also, that was a Japanese sub. Shouldn't they be using Glorious Nippon Oxygen Torpedoes folded more than a thousand times to produce no bubble trail?
>>
>>141223493
No bubble trail doesn't mean you don't leave a trail. It's just that you are much harder to detect until rather up close, although why they aren't using the oxygen torp is beyond me.
>>
>>141223489

Did you miss the part that all the boy's ships were firing 'training rounds'? They weren't trying to blow the Musashi up, they were trying to make it stop. I'm pretty sure any WW2 BB could give no fucks about a bunch of glorified metal tubes hitting it's hull.
>>
Can you hear the sound of a hardcore localizationfag crying, because someone directly mentioned one of the things he localized previously? Isn't it beautiful how he suffers after being forced to leave something in Japanese for the sake of making sense?
>>
Who let the maniac back on the bridge? She's shooting again in no time!
>>
>>141223489
>>141223612
You should've been in the last thread. Now I have to say it to you again.
Their FCS is digital. The eyeball rangefinder isn't doing the hard task. Tama was good, but the ship's using modern surface radar to make that hard kill happen; the rangefinder is only responsible to check the elevation and training of the turrets.
>>
>>141223698
>In before he localizes it further anyways because he is too butthurt
>>
>>141223489

Exactly. Even if they don't have missiles, the rapid-fire gun (76mm? 5 inch?), while not able to penetrate the Musashi's belt armor, would be able to trash everything above the waterline - optics, radar, secondaries - and probably burn it down with sustained fire.
>>
>>141223703
>She's shooting again in no time!
She already did.
>>
>>141223721

But if they have the mechanical ability to fire with that kind of precision and computers fast enough to compute and plot the shots, it should be standard tactics.
>>

Then why, when their reinforcements arrived, did they continue to use those same useless torpedoes? And why don't they have any better weapons? Even if It's a training ship they should have something as a backup. I mean even the Harekaze had a real depth charge and live ammo.

Also, when the Harekaze used her training torpedo it completely incapacitated the instructor ship They seem to gave more than a bang.

>>
>>141223811
Well, it's not, because a WW2 destroyer is not really expected to use their primary armament this way. If it were the 5" on the AEGIS destroyer though, then it by all means would be used in such a role.
Even if the 10cm/65 was designed for anti-air role, it was definitely incapable of intercepting incoming rounds using mark 0 eyeballs.

>>141223748

Except they were intentionally going out of their way NOT to fuck over the Musashi. If they wanted to sink her they'd probably just sit outside her firing range and lob missiles at her. The whole point is the training ships were firing dummy rounds in an attempt to stop the Musashi, not light it on fire and kill the crew.
>>
>>141223921
Well this is what live ammo an Akizuki class destroyer has.

Torpedoes on modern destroyers that aren't training rounds only have a 100 lb max warhead usually. Baby tier in comparison to 600 lb+ warheads of modern submarines and WW2. Since torpedoes on DDs are relegated for anti-submarine warfare.

Their anti-ship missiles seemed to be EMP jammed becaused hamster stuff. The only real chance is to continuously pepper the superstructure of the Musashi with their 76mm gun.

Also firing on a aluminum hull LCS vs. an armored WW2 Yamato class BB is quite a change.

>The device merely detects mice (going hand in hand with the fact that it resembles ears), so it's only necessary for one of the pair to wear it
>Alternately, the device works against mice in a certain radius, so it's enough to equip one of the pair if they stick together. The girls actually stick together whenever we see them, so it's plausible.
>When departing the ship, the girl puts a hat over the cat ears. This means the cat ears are either irrelevant at this point (no longer interrogating? abovedeck?) or not inhibited by the hat.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to hit a tiny fast moving object with another tiny fast moving object? It's almost impossibly hard. I don't care how good their fcs ism it literally can't be that good.

Also, in the episode 1 threads when people were speculating why the instructor ship was missing, there were tons of people like you saying that even 5% accuracy for naval warfare is amazing. So which is it, is their FCS amazingly accurate beyond current science, or is it amazingly inaccurate like it was 4 episodes ago? You can't have both?

The Harekaze doesn't have live ammunition. Every single weapon they have is 'training'. Their shells are basically dummy rounds, their depth charges have massively weakened yields and their torpedoes have weak yields as well.

The entire point is that these ships can't pose much of a threat. Why do you think modern destroyers that have paper-thin armor are tanking 18 inch shells and not going down? The Musashi, like the Harekaze, only has training rounds.

I don't know if the instructor ships get live ammunition or not, but so far the Harekaze (and thus the Musashi by extension) has no live ammunition whatsoever. Everything is gimped to do a little damage to another ship and not much more. Hence why a submarine took a depth charge to the face and showed no signs of damage.
>>
>>141224061
>76mm gun.

It's a 127mm, and with the rate of fire either would have, that's hardly out of the question, especially is they retreated to the range where the Musushu's range would suffer.

Not true. The training vessels do carry a certain number of live rounds. Harekaze used such against the Spee.

>>141224229
Only something akin to AEGIS combat system has a real chance of using projectile to achieve such a hard kill. The weapon system has to engage the gun FCS and activate the guns for something like this to happen. It's not beyond current science to make this hard kill happen. It's not doable on analog director with eyeball fire directors though.

It is true that 5% is considered good back in ww2, but that's not excusable for a modern FCS such as the Sarushima to do that badly. Is it a case of ECCM rats onboard fucking her up there? Maybe, considering what happened to the ASROCs in this episode.
>>
>>141224170
>You don't give truppen live and blank ammo in a live fire excercise
Maybe it doesn't live up to German safety standards, at least for the post-war era, but it can and should be done in times of very high alert, for example if actual combat could take place right in the middle of the exercise.

That's what I'm saying. Missile to missile interception is one thing and that is possible with today's tech. But artillery to artillery interception, not so much. A shell is a much, much smaller target than a missile, and artillery doesn't have the advent of being able to fine tune trajectory mid-air like missiles do.

The infestation has been going on for a while. The higher-ups know, the Safety Board knows, but the schools (including the staff) are kept in the dark.
It could be that it's only recently started plaguing school ships, but you can see the Safety Board already has cat-ear countermeasures and makes no mistake about covering up each incident.
Seeing as the rat came from a delivery company's box, it's plausible that the infestation has commercial shipping and/or the postal system as vectors. If it hit proper military shipping first, you'd expect shit to hit the fan much faster, blowing the lid off the whole thing.
Airships like the one in this episode are probably the only places truly safe from the rats (until someone brings them in), and they're likely to provide contrast for infestations on a large scale causing cities to descend to madness.
Munetani's mom talks to the captain who fired on the Harekaze. Munetani herself has the autist and a genuine rat on board. The mother-daughter connection means they'll eventually meet - my guess is that each one will have one half of the puzzle, and they'll make the discovery together, possibly while already suspended/detained/discredited.

I will correct you only in that the 10cm gun wasn't really used as a surface to surface weapon during ww2. It was meant for anti-air and it worked with the type 93 high angle director for that task. AP shells meant against surface combatants were designed, but they weren't ever widely adopted.

Harekaze does possess surface scanning radars, band x and s. We haven't seen the kind of Weapon control system and the actual gun FCS that's employed by the Harekaze though, since there's no way that the eyeball Type 93 could respond in time. I actually think that this ship may have a display system at a CIC somewhere, but we'll need to see it in the anime to know.

That shell starts out at mach 2.3, and it comes at you at about 1.4 even at about 30km away. This is worse than being harpooned or being hit with an Exocet. (Exocet was Mach 0.9)

Do not underestimate the power of autism...

The bigger question is if something as small as 27 kg 100mm shell can actually deflect much less detonate a 460mm 1460kg shell.
If Mushashi is firing type-91 or type-1 AP shells, those things have armor of their own, more than Harekaze has on her sides. Shells need the armor to penetrate opponents hull before exploding.

If Mushashi was shooting High explosive shells, they could probably be detonated by Harekazes AA but even a single hit from such a shell would blow any of those opposing destroyers in half.

Pic related, look at that massive thing.

The Harekaze is also slower, turns slower, much larger, loses more if it is hit (29 vs 1, plus value of ship), and actually would still be damaged by near misses.

If Mike made the Harekaze suicide rush the Musashi she would be a way shittier captain than someone who just abandoned their crew for a few minutes to try to talk their friend down. Instead she would literally get everyone on her ship killed by trying to talk her friend down.

By using the jetski the only person endangered is herself, until you take into account that the crew is not going to abandon their captain and thus stays in range of the Musashi to prepare to save her ass if needed.

Modern torpedoes are weaker because modern ships are basically glorified paper boats. They don't have even a fraction of the armor of WW2 ships and thus weapon systems don't need to be as powerful to penetrate them.

Modern torpedoes COULD be more powerful if we wanted them to be. But to do so would be a waste of resources because it'd be massive over-kill.

She had abandoned her best friend once already for the sake of her crew. She knows she's emotionally compromised, hence why she gave command over to Shiro before heading off to save her friend. Almost certainly not detonate - during the Battle Off Samar, the Yammato hit the Taffy-3 destroyers with it's main battery, but accomplished fairly little, because the shells punched clean through without hitting anything hard enough to set them off.
>>
>>141226765
The 10cm/65 hurls this 13kg HE shell, and it's got about 1000 meters/s muzzle velocity (mach 2.9). Something like this would have the needed kinetic energy to engage the 46cm shell and detonate it, provided that you connect the impossibly small target.

That wasn't why. It's because the Crossroads tests showed that even though battleships and heavy cruisers can survive a nuclear attack physically intact, they'll be contaminated by fallout and rendered useless anyway.

As a result they switched to cheaper, more disposable ships.

The F-14 was another product of the theory that any future naval war would involve nuclear attacks against surface ships, as it and the AIM-54 Phoenix were designed to intercept Soviet bomber formations before they could drop their payload.
>>

>Zipang
That ship at least had the radar, computing and firecontrol capability to intercept those shells.

But as this anon said:
>>141226557
>The problem here is that the 18" shell that comes at you is this 1.4t, 3200lb piece of steel with a little bit of explosive inside of it.
Those things are massive rods of steel desinged to fuck your ship up.

Zipang was using Sea Sparrow missiles with 40 kg proximity fused warheads. Blowing of the windshield from a 460mm shell could possibly make it fall short and therefore miss. but considering the poor accuracy of japanese WW2 naval gunnery the ship would still be at risk. All in all those things were nasty.

Optical rangefinders are still outside of the citadel. Everything needed to operate the weaponry in terms of FCS is outside the citadel and is vulnerable to fire.

Mission kill isn't crippling the BB. It's simply rendering it incapable or ineffective in its ability to return fire in the case of a BB.

No. And an even bigger no to someone writing a manual on it. The closest thing to it is bullets colliding mid-air, which is possible and has happened before. There are a couple example of fused bullets from the American Civil War.

That said, those bullets are one in a in a million fluke that only happened because of the sheer number of bullets being fired throughout the war. Hitting an artillery shell with another shell on purpose is practically impossible, and even more so when all you have for targeting is an autistic child. And before someone starts spouting about FCS, we say them manually adjust the firing angle this episode around minute 21

When you use a missile, you get to correct the course as you go. Not the case with a cannon shell.
Also, keep in mind that a well trained sniper may be able to hit someone's head a mile away on a good day, but that requires a rifle and ammo optimized for sniping above all other uses. Even if the Harukaze had such a useless cannon, you can imagine that scaling up the gun and the distance to the target would make accuracy much worse.
If the idiot savant hit the shell with a shell, it's isekai-grade magic right there. No amount of skill and tinkering could yield this.

Not necessarily if you expect the enemy to nuke your fleet. A nuclear attack will effectively destroy a fleet comprised of battleships and heavy cruisers just as well as a fleet comprised of destroyers and missile cruisers. Built with the same technology, it would be much more expensive to replace the battleships and heavy cruisers though.

Theoretically you could retrieve and decontaminate the nuked battleships and CAs, but it would be difficult to do in an active warzone and prohibitively expensive.

Of course that scenario pretty much stopped being valid once ICBMs made MAD a serious threat, and fell out of relevance completely after the Soviet Union collapsed.

If not for Congress constantly cockblocking everything nice we try to get for our military, it would actually be a really good idea to transition back to armored cruisers and battleships, since they're much more likely to survive against asymmetric threats and ASMs that we may face from Iran and other countries. The Samuel B Roberts (#3) wouldn't have been nearly destroyed by an Iranian missile if she had six inches of steel protecting her hull, after all.

>>
>>141227702

No, I was saying we messed up on both 'cheep' and 'disposable'.

And I agree about going back to a sort of armored cruiser model. The ratio of surface armor to internal reinforcement might need some study - I don't know if it's viable to try and reliably stop everything on the belt, but containing and limiting the effect of a missile strike would be a good idea.

That said, you'd want to also give the thing a serious APS suite. The armor is to stop the one that gets away.
>>
>>141227702

Have you missed the part where modern ASMs are completely incapable of penetrating an armored warship, Moskit aside?
>>
>>141227913
Obviously.

If we were to build a modernized Montana with AEGIS and VLS, it'd be more or less impervious to anything that could be thrown at it. All the anti-air capability of an entire CVBG with the armor to soak anything that slips through.

Obviously there's a chance that something may slip through and find a weak point in the protection scheme, but it'd be much more capable of surviving that scenario than an Arleigh Burke or Ticonderoga that can be crippled by a rubber boat filled with sand niggers.
>>
>>141227983

A modern Montana, armed with railguns could probably still be torpedoed from a sub, or would probably be mission killed in a few hits. Of course it would fair better against pirates/sandniggers but it would be a massive target and still have less power projection capability and utitility than a modern supercarrier.

https://warshipphilosophy.wordpress.com/2013/05/29/modern-warship-armor-part-2/

This makes good points on the choice between strong armor and active defence. The impression I get is that, since active defence can be projected to nearby ships and doesn't lose capability after stopping a missile, it's usually a better deal than armor. It would still be good insurance to have a degree of 'citadel' protection like the Kirov though.
>>
>>141228639
Even small AShM's like Harpoons have comparable warheads to aerial torpedoes, and are not limited to hitting ships in their most heavily armored areas.

>>141227332
Megumin stop posting.
>>
>>141228784
Aerial torpedoes were fairly ineffective against Musashi and Yamato, and ASMs wouldn't be half as effective as even those.

What makes torpedoes effective is the fact that water transfers the energy of the warhead far better than air. A torpedo doesn't waste 95% of the energy in its warhead with a big fireball. It transfers a much larger portion of that energy to the hull itself. More importantly, the torpedo puts a hole in the hull below the waterline.

An ASM would not only waste most of its energy, but the hole, assuming we're ignoring the fact that it wouldn't have a snowball's chance in Hell of penetrating the armor, would be in a non-vital compartment where the actual damage to the ship and its systems would be minimal and fires could be easily contained.

Even if you were to switch to a shaped charge to allow the missile to penetrate the citadel armor, the missile would actually be less effective. Ships are not tanks. They're not tiny, cramped boxes filled with people and ammunition in close proximity. The jet of molten copper from a shaped warhead would do effectively nothing to anything in any compartment it would reach after striking the armor.

No it doesn't. Or are you saying city-size self-sustaining carriers are perfectly viable? Or that any military will ever let civilians use their tanks as pseudo martial arts competition?
>>
>>141229181
The problem is that creating armor penetrating missiles in response than creating armored warships in reaction to missiles. It doesn't take much for someone to say "put armored cap on missile". And voila you have armor defeating missile.

And the Russians already have huge ass missiles capable of defeating a good amount of armor that ain't BB tier.
>>
>>141229543
An armored cap won't get the job done. Missiles aren't rigid. They're not meant for penetration. Even if you gave it a cap, all that would happen is that the cap would absorb all the energy of the missile splattering against the armor.
>>
>>141229624
>Missiles aren't rigid. They're not meant for penetration.
wut?
>>
>>141229624
It's an oversimplification but adaption of missiles and warheads is infinitely much more easier than building the ship itself.

What would happen is that the ship is countered the moment it comes out of drydock if the enemy has any idea of what you were trying to put out.

>>
>>141230386
Well missiles already have shaped charges to them and divert the blast inwards to their targets.

Problem with HEAT is that a ship is filled with multiple compartments. It isn't a tank with a single compartment. You'll get in to one compartment and that's it. Nothing else much happens.

That's just bullshit. Yen during 1971 was 350 to the dollar. I know you are backpedaling all the way to 1871, buy even during 1897 the Yen was only 0.5 dollars. The value was pegged during the occupation government to 1:360.

>That doesn't really explain why the person with the closest contact to the hamster on the Harekaze went crazy
Coincidence. I'm saying that both were affected by some 3rd party weapon/disease, but the hamster got taken over first, which is why the eyes glowed first. So it appears the hamster is the cause, but the reality is the hamster was also just affected, but more quickly.

1) That area is shot at with invisible mind control laser beam super weapon
2) The hamster goes crazy first and the eyes glow
3) Tama has a slightly larger brain so it takes longer before she goes crazy

It only looks like the hamster caused it, just to fuck with you.

Of maybe they're carriers for devices, but the glowing eyes does not signify them controlling someone else, but being controlled by the device along with the target.

Mike was desperate because she had initially abandoned Moka for her crew after hearing her distress call. Time and time again they kept bringing up news about the Musashi and now she see they're firing at each other. I mean, all things considers, she did explicitly gave command over to Shiro before heading over. I highly doubt MIke could have logically gave out orders even if she had stayed. That and if that wasn't Moka on the Musashi but one of Shiro's relatives, I'm sure Shiro would have done the same thing as well.

What I am really disappointed with is that Shiro did fine in commanding the ship, but she ended up putting the Harekaze in very grave danger there. The unlikely act of brilliance/luck such as Tama's hard-kill of the 46cm round is no way to address the situation.

Shiro, who kept telling Mike that it is the Harekaze who needed help, has totally gone back on her words by going in after Mike; the Harekaze, under order to not engage in combat, has no mean to seriously oppose the Musashi, a warship that has a tighter turning diameter than the destroyer and way heavier ordinance to total them with.

As for Mike, well what the fuck was he thinking? Is Moka that much of a girl that he'd lose his mind totally?

June 27, 1871. Meiji pegged the Yen at 1500mg of gold equivalent, but it was silver based. The ratio of silver teal vs gold in Japan was higher than the rest of the world, so western powers flooded Japan with silver, and Japan had to move this to silver standards.

By 1897, Japan codified their currency act and switched to a gold standard for good, legally pegging their yen at 750mg worth of gold. This exchange ratio stayed until 1931 when Britain debased the pound sterling from gold with Japan following suit.

I suppose because Britian is not part of the Euro world, so it would affect European political structure but not as much to the financial aspect?

She couldn't get those if they're still over the Spee now could she? Same goes for the RV. If she can't just go to Danemark and stay over some RV park, then she's got no choice but to do this mit japanischen.

Just finished watching the episode, hearing my hometown get namedropped sure was surprising. Why the hell would some random japanese writer even know about the Heppenheimer castle?

I was in Dusseldorf because I needed to be at Hannover for the Messe, and I've seen plenty of Kraut Weebs interacting with Asiatisch, and you are aware that the Japanese have been there since the 80s ja? The Japanese actually has a fairly decent grasp of Deutschland overall.

I don't eat much Nürnberger Rostbratwurst by the way. Do you?

Actually, it's funny that I found about DoKomi and lined up at the last moment (and I still couldn't get it) and it was during the lineup that I came to realize that a few German weeb actually learned their English by watching English subs due to how fast they come out a need shitpost on 4chan about the plot.

Not him, but yeah, I do. I love them.

>grasp of Deutschland overall.
Not really. You see a lot of them around Düsseldorf and Essen, but apart from that they are pretty rare. Düsseldorf has a really large japanese community in general.

That's how most of us learn english. Not limited to anime subs, but you get the idea. They actually teach us british english in school btw.

Also Dokomi is shit, as are all the other german conventions. Only GamesCom is somewhat decent, allthough it was better before it moved to Cologne.

The Japanese trade office at Düsseldorf has a pretty damn good info source on the happenings at Germany. Not related, but the food at Immermannstrasse is the real deal.

As for DoKomi a shit, well at least it's not 100% Narutards. I actually saw a big Homu, a Shimakaze cosplay and a Umaru.
