How does the movie compare to the OVAs of Time of Eve?
>>
>>141196350
The movie is almost exactly the same as the OVAs, but with a really smooth transition between episodes. I think there are a handful more scenes in the movie, but you're not missing out on too much watching one or the other.
>>
>>141196312
Easily the most underrated Ghibli film. People tend to favor the likes of Spirited Away and Mononoke, but I honestly think that Kiki, Whisper of the heart and the studio's more personal/less ambitious works are better.
>>
>>141195662
Man that's a good movie.
>>
>>141196230
It hits close to home, and it gives me different feels each time I watch it
>>
>>141196230
The MC was too embarrassed to write the girl he was in love with, and over time, that was compounded with the guilt of not having contacted her, but he never got over her, and he let that remain a huge a regret for him that stopped him from ever trying for another relationship.
Even at the end, when he sees her across the train tracks, he still thinks maybe this is his second chance.
And even we (or at least I) as the audience believe (or at least want to) that even though she's getting married, maybe something is going to happen.
But she gives zero fucks, doesn't even talk to him, because she's completely over him and she can tell that he isn't.

It's a parable about A) putting yourself out there, or if that fails, then B) getting over it.

I mean, 5cm is pretty hit-or-miss.
Most people either think it's a fantastic vignette or it's empty as fuck.

What do you think of the ending of Only Yesterday?
I loved everything up the ending, but I felt like the last few minutes kind of betrayed the rest of the movie, which was about growing up.
Yeah, it was partly about rediscovering her childhood, but I felt like it was also about how she had learned from her past, and her final decision was very much a return to her childlike innocence.

I mean, her plan was "okay, so I'm considering moving out here, let me go back to the city and think it over", and then she suddenly decides, "hey fuck it let's just do it right now."

Sorry, it's just that I haven't seen anyone mention Omoide Poroporo in so long here.

If that was the intention, why would they bother to show her in scenes that are independent of his presence?
If what you're saying is true, I think it would have worked better to only show her at the train crossing, instead of including her preparing for her wedding and then going out for a walk.
>>
>>141197017
This is exactly how I took it. It's a don't take things for granted story. I think it was done quite well overall and really enjoy it. A lot of people just get salty over."bad endings".
>>
>>141197218
I mean, I do think he has a point, in that the plot feels like it just gets dropped in the end.
I kind of just hand-wave it and sweep it under the rug by saying, "well yeah, that's part of the message of not taking things for granted", even though I don't think that was really the intention.
>>
>>141196515
I just gave a few examples to get my point across. Only Yesterday is also among my favorite Ghibli films and it indeed fits in the category that I described.
>>
>>141197278

It was conceived through fanservice, took half an hour to really start, and turned a conclusive ending to a series into a cliffhanger.

But Rebellion Story still has some of my favorite uses of animation and symbolism that I've seen in a film.

It's threads like these that make me take a step back and appreciate the richness of the medium. There always seems to be one more film, series, OVA, or short that's worth viewing and recommending.

The library of worthy manga is even more staggering, doubtless.

I like the coming of age aspect of the story. It has magical aspects to it, but if you take that away the movie turns into just a girl coming into terms with her own insecurities and trying to establish a new life in a unknown town. Some people find it to be rather plain, but that's exactly what makes it great to me because it seems genuine and not something overly dramatized, which is the same reason why I love Whisper of the Heart, both of these films have drama, however I view them as being more genuine and honest dramas than most anime or live action films out there. To put it simple, most of the things that Kiki got through in the film are simple and in a way, rather ordinary, but at the same time they're conveyed in such a relatable and honest way that I can't help but feel really immersed in the whole thing.

I also really love the comfy but at the same time motivational atmosphere that the movie has. It's rather difficult to convey in words, but I always get filled with tenderness, joy and inspiration when I watch this movie for some reason.

That's what it excelled at. It's slow and quiet with barely any dialogue, but it builds on this oppressively lonely atmosphere underneath it all.

It's the feeling of exploring a dead world where the only people who are left don't even know who they are anymore.

I'm not criticizing the movie for not giving more screen time to Haruhi, I understand that was the point and I know it actually benefits from the lack of her. However, maybe I can't help but get a little frustrated when I rewatch it because that movie will most likely be the last anime interaction that we're going to get from the series and it barely shows the main star of it. Maybe if we got a S3 I wouldn't have this weird feeling of ''I want more Haruhi even though the point of the whole thing is Haruhi disappearing''

I agree with most of your points though.

Akira. Imagine being hopeless addicted to animation in your late teens (late 80s/early 90s), but all you see is shit in America. Then you get this 3-4th gen VHS copy (barely watchable) of an animated movie that actually has mature subject matter and a serious story. After that, there was never any going back.

Wasn't until several years later did I get to see my next film at a rental store called "Warriors of the Wind". Rented the fuck out of it.

I don't see why it is bothering you.

Truth remains the same no matter what you are. Life in the country side is better, there is no reason for her not to return here.

Being grown up does not really mean anything.

It was a very lucid decision, why cope with a superficial and sad life in the city if happiness and plenitude resides in the countryside.

I feel like you are making the mistake of associating "being grown up" (which does not mean much in the first place) and having tolerate the absurdity of day to day life.

Going to a work you don't like so that you can live, why not grow up your own food and be happy.

I feel like the part about fractions was a reflexion about the meaning of abstract concept and how accepting them can create a false state of understanding, just so that you can "fit in".

She said screw that, and I agree with her choice.

And I love Omoide Poro Poro too by the way great movie.

Perfect Blue is also up there.

Well I did pretend to be retarted because the question is dumb in the first place.

They made a decision to make an animated movie, they made the decision to have a female lead.

Why did they they make this shot or this shot, why is there this sound effect at this particular frame?

Why do you make a painting of a scene instead of using your camera?

Animation has intrinsic qualities and they decided to go for this medium. That is all, the rest is your own interpretation.

When you see >pic related you don't ask why not just take a photo.

There you go "pal"

The unapologetic bittersweetness the film have. A crucial poignant tale of the reality of life and friendship. The characters have a certain passivity to them, they could have changed their lives if they initially acted differently.

After the protagonist wrote a confessional love letter, he lost it, and when he meet with that friend from childhood a few years later and kissed. He didn't reciprocate because he thought the loss of the letter signified something.

Then, there were the tomboy, who fell in love the protagonist during high school and couldn't articulate how she felt so she opted to walk home with him until she realized he were looking elsewhere and not at her, she decided she'll always love him despite the unrequited love.

Years, later protagonist meet with the childhood friend albeit indirectly near the train tracks, didn't speak a word and only glanced at her while the train passed and obscured their vision of the other.

If you look pass the romance, it's about loneliness, nobody found it. They resigned themselves to what they perceived were right for themselves or the other, if they communicated their sentiments sincerely, maybe the outcome could've turned out different.

The greatness in Spirited Away is in it's setting.
Ghibli is usually really good with that, but in that movie they went a step up. I, personally, have never watched anything better than SP regarding it
Everything feels utterly alive, and the bathhouse is presented in a way that if you were to be left alone in there you would know how to walk around it.

When I think about my favorite anime "film," a lot of no-brainers come to mind.

I really love Jin-Roh. The first time I watched it I thought it was kinda cool but often boring. That's going into it expecting an action movie, though.

I ended up watching it two, three, probably four times over the years, and I ended up liking it more and more each time. Totally opposite of what I experience with a lot of contemporary live action movies, which are fun the first time around but a total bore if you watch it again. Really helps that the movie is visual eye-candy in a really non-flamboyant way.

This always seems like a silly question. For one, why is live-action the default? The question would only really make sense if the creator was from a live-action background and decided to cross over.

>>
>>141223847
It's a weird delusion I've been seeing over the past few months or so, where people seem to think animation has to justify itself or "take advantage of the medium" as they say. I can see where that mindset comes from but jeez it's a dumb one.

Patlabor 2 is more interesting compared to the rest of Patlabor because of how he basically turns it into proto-GitS in terms of tone and characters. It's the odd one out, or at least it would be if the third movie didn't exist.
>>
>>141223984
>take advantage of the medium
And where did the idea that putting fantasy elements at everything is the same as taking advantage of the medium?I can put fantasy elements and unrealistic stuff in live-action movies as well, I mean, capeshit is one of the most popular genres of live-action movies these days and they're nothing more than bad shonens really. Hell, some of the most popular films of all time, like Harry Potter and Stars wars are completly unrealistic, and by that anon's logic ''there's no reason to make them live-action''.

So it's not that the idea of taking advantage of the medium is silly, just that these anons have no fucking idea what this statement means in the first place and like to repeat it just because it makes them feel smart.
>>

I think it stems from a reaction against realism in general. Like, the idea that "if you're not animating with squash and stretch you may as well be doing live action" (stupid) broadened to the overall concept of realism being inherently inferior in animation.

This silly notion that animation can't be realistic or serious is probably one of the biggest reasons why many people think that's dumb to take any anime seriously, for them anime are just cartoons and cartoons are inherently silly things for kids in the mind of many westerners, which is probably disney's fault since they were basically the company that dominated the animation industry for decades.

Good lad good post.
>>
>>141225893
You could say that's disney fault, but other western animation studios didn't do much to change that notion either.
>>
>>141226150
Can't blame the studios. Honestly it was more the censors than anybody else. If you look at ReBoot, as soon as they got out of their deal with ABC, and didn't have the BSnP down their neck for every episode, they made the show way darker, grittier, and more adult.
>>
>>141195868
I thought it was good, but being so uncomfortable and unpleasant to watch I could never say it was a favourite.
>>
>>141225893
It's certainly Disney's fault, you can see the same influence on other nations as well. I think people's stigma against anime transcends that simple "animation is for kids" idea though. Stuff like sexual content and the perceived community surrounding it are off putting as well.
>>
>>141197530
I didnt like this movie at first but I started to think of the movie more like a dream than a coherent story. The ending where he reflects on his entire life and his work is powerful.

Its a special movie indeed.

Royal Space Force: Wings of Honnêamise
The setting, the story, the animation.. Its all fucking brilliant.
>>
>>141227043
>Stuff like sexual content
And yet, people seem to consider GoT a amazing show.

>community
The community is no better or worse than any other community surrounding a geek hobby.

The fact that's a product from a country with a culture completely different from ours has much more weight when it comes to antagonism against the medium than sexual content or fandom.
>>

Honneamise is such a hidden gem nowadays.
>>
>>141227442
Sure, but there's a definite difference between adult titties on the TV screen and fetishization of underage cartoon schoolgirls. People are also hypocritical, especially when it comes to things they don't understand. I agree with your point on community, but it's worth noting that most other geek hobbies have pretty much entered mainstream awareness and acceptance. Anime is different because of, as you said, cultural barriers. I think that's what prevents people from attempting to understand it past stigma and cliché.
>>
>>141227231

I loved the animation and the setting was ok but i felt the story and characters were pretty bland and kind of annoying.

Not him, but the stigma against sexualization is definitely a major factor. GoT and cartoons are not the same thing, and the idea of enjoying a shot of a cartoon highschooler's panties is basically synonymous with social bottomfeeders.
>>
>>141227789
People talk about it all the fucking time, it's not remotely hidden.
>>
>>141227862
>but there's a definite difference between adult titties on the TV screen and fetishization of underage cartoon schoolgirls.
Why though? In GoT There's literally rape, cannibalism, sex with underage girls(Daenerys was actually 15 at the time of the first episode, the series just changed that), torture, girls getting naked all the time for no reason, dicks being cutted and the list goes on. So if I understand it right, showing all kinds of degeneracy and extreme violence is somehow more acceptable than highschool girls being sexy, when they are in fact sexy in real life?
Damn, this is what I call double standards.

>but it's worth noting that most other geek hobbies have pretty much entered mainstream awareness and acceptance
People who take video games seriously are still considered manchildren who live in their mother's basement by the average person, but yes, it's still much more acceptable to the mainstream public than anime because I can at least talk about popular video games with normalfags without being judged.
>>141228340
>GoT and cartoons are not the same thing
Why they aren't though?Only difference is that one is live action while the other isn't, and the notion that the two should be treated differently is silly.
>>
>>141228538
It is 100% double standards.
>>
>>141228538
>Why they aren't though?
I don't know. I'm not saying they should be treated differently, I'm just saying they are. And on the topic of underage girls, the actual actress was like 19 at the time. And yes, since there's no actress in anime it shouldn't make a difference, but it still does to most normalfags, which is why people are up in arms about fictional minors being nude in anime, but not in TV where they're portrayed by actual adults. Hell, before GoT was a TV show people reading the books would probably have found that weird as well, because the type of person who jacks off to fantasy novels is also socially inferior to the type of person who looks at real titties on TV.
>>
>>141228679
>I'm just saying they are
I'm just saying that this shouldn't matter. Books and live action films are also different, but this doesn't mean that writing something controversial is more acceptable in one than it is in the other.

>nd on the topic of underage girls, the actual actress was like 19 at the time.
I know, I just mentioned that because she was 15 in the book. HBO changed that.

>Hell, before GoT was a TV show people reading the books would probably have found that weird as well, because the type of person who jacks off to fantasy novels is also socially inferior to the type of person who looks at real titties on TV.
I understand what you're saying and I don't disagree that people see it like that. Was just trying to show that this kind of mentality shouldn't exist. I mean, western society acts like Nicki Minaj clips are okay while Cid wearing provacative clothes in a FF game isn't, which is incredible silly.

Probably How'l Moving Castle. It wasn't perfect and if we compare it to the book it was a shit adaptation, but it was very visually nice, had arguably the best theme song composed by Joe Hisaishi, and it's still a very nice premise, with great characters even if badly executed.

Honneamise is easily right behind EoE as Anno's definitive directorial masterpiece, the entire movie thematically crescendoing to the civilization montage at the end seems like a prototype to the orgasmic tummult of the End of Evangelion, with arguably a better paced and more coherent buildup justifying it than the NGE series and Death constituted.

Could have very well just been a platonic friendship. 5cm/s looked as nice but I felt had a more complete story with a more thoughtful message. At first I thought it was anticlimactic but the idea of letting go is a good one, I think.

He doesn't think its his second chance. It's pure symbolism. He's looking back at her, at his past one last time, before moving forward. He finally has closure after seeing her again, and he can finally move on with his life after being stuck in the past for so long. When the train passes between them and she isn't there when it leaves its a call back to the begging of the story when she first leaves him to board the train that takes her away.

If you notice right before that we're shown the places every significant event has taken place previously in the film. the convenience story, the fields outside of the trains, the classroom, etcetera.

So yes, he is over her by the end of the film. That's why he smiles right at the end before the credits roll. It really is a great film so there's no harm in just watching it over again.

I just don't understand why he would use the term pretentious to describe Haruhi. If he wanted to use generic terms and buzzwords to insult the show, things like ''nothing happens'', ''moeshit'' and ''generic shit'' would be much more fitting than pretentious.
>>
>>141249051
No, I think pretentious is much more fitting. He's still wrong, but I can definitely see how someone would think that Haruhi isn't actually parodying the tropes it think's its parodying and in doing so it's pretentious.

As far as I'm concerned pic related and Perfect Blue are the only passable adult dramas.

Pretty much all of of Kon's work is close except Paprika which is crap that relegated him to a kid's anime before he died. Some of Oshii's is too but he creates tone problems by adapting stuff then inserting his dour self in where it doesn't belong.

>>141225246
I think people are too hard on wolf children. A large theme of the film is that parenthood is a shitshow. She's not idealized, and her ad hoc fuckups are there for the adult half of the audience to empathize with.
>>
>>141249349
>adult dramas

>>
>>141249310
Being silly does not preclude a show from being pretentious, nor does being a slice of life. Like I said, I can see how someone would see the parody as being pretentious.
>>
>>141249424
Something is pretentious when it tries to be/sound more than what actually is. I can't see any instance where Haruhi does this.
>>
>>141249469
I'll say it a third time: if a parody fails at being a parody, it's being pretentious, as it's affecting a commentary on something but failing to do so.

A lot of garbage is only "classic" because there was an incredibly tiny selection of anime localized in the west back before the internet, and it was a phenomenon because it was very rare to see western animation that wasn't disney or capeshit. >shitty four-cour shows all the time.
Cut for cut it's entirely different scales of work.
Even something like Nadia, where everyone worked like slaves (even by anime standards) to the point they lost money on the show it's filled with QUALITY and eventually forced outsourcing even if it has a few brilliantly done sequences.
What's happened since the 90s though is that the bottom has fallen out of the high end niche market. Someone doing a four cour flagship put out a slick ova in their offtime. That doesn't happen anymore.
>>
>>141268397
I think it's his most "hollywood" film, I guess. Big set pieces and action and explosions yadda yadda. Like Howl it's a cool movie and I enjoyed it but no lasting impact, as opposed to literally every other film by him. Have you seen Cagliostro? Miyazaki's best adventure movie in my opinion.
>>
>>141268461
>Cut for cut it's entirely different scales of work.
The idea that no one was pushing out high volumes of mediocre work is still completely wrong.

>>141268461
>What's happened since the 90s though is that the bottom has fallen out of the high end niche market. Someone doing a four cour flagship put out a slick ova in their offtime. That doesn't happen anymore.
Yes, obviously, because OVAs are dead. We still have plenty of high-production value shows, though. Also, this is purely talking about animation quality, I hope, because most slick OVAs were terrible.
>>
>>141268647
The scale at which something was high level then and high level now is actually completely fucking different due to how production has changed.
>plenty of high-production value shows
No not really, not on a level that's different from back in the day. The traditional outlets for high production value work ovas and film are dead and severely contracted respectively.
This is in no small part due to studios being able to crunch out completely finished shots at a rate never before seen.

Look bro, they didn't move to digital production for the sake of change. These are businesses and it was a series of business decision. They did it because it's a paradigm shift in speed even in the earliest days of the changeover.
>>
>>141268908
>No not really, not on a level that's different from back in the day. The traditional outlets for high production value work ovas and film are dead and severely contracted respectively.
OVAs being dead isn't about cel, though, it's about TV anime relying more on disc sales now and, again, the preference of shorter shows over long ones nowadays, which used to be major differences between TV and OVAs. TV anime has effectively moved into OVAs' market and crowded them out. And the peak of movie budgets was after the switch.

>>141268908
>Look bro, they didn't move to digital production for the sake of change. These are businesses and it was a series of business decision. They did it because it's a paradigm shift in speed even in the earliest days of the changeover.
No shit, but it simply hasn't caused this drastic reduction in quality like you're claiming it did. First you said they didn't use to shoot out a bunch of low-quality stuff, which they did, and now you've switched to attacking the high end of the modern market, which is doing just fine for TV, while its decline in other areas is very clearly for reasons other than the digital switch.
>>
>>141268526
That's how I felt, and it didn't exactly fail at that since the action, steampunk vibe and scenery porn were very enjoyable. Unfortunately it was at the sacrifice of nearly everything else. The moral was clearly supposed to be about the lust for power being destructive, but the villains were flat and the whole thing felt sloppily executed. Pazu and Sheeta have to be his least notable MCs too even with all the cute hugging.

Sadly I haven't seen Cagliostro yet. I'll get around to it soon since I'm determined to finally get the last few Ghibli/Miyazaki movies off my backlog this year.

The high production value market is dead. Everything's moved to the middle.

>The high production value market is dead. Everything's moved to the middle.
Also nope. Nichijou is not in the middle. Dennou Coil is not in the middle. Hyouka is not in the middle, OPM is not, Space Dandy is not, Towa no Quon, Letter to Momo, Giovanni's Island, Kaguya-hime, etc.
>>
>>141270008
No it's demonstrably not true you liar.
Look at the number of shows, by cour from a chart for 1995 vs today. It's completely fucking different. This is objective fact that you can't hide from. It's demonstrably the exact opposite of your claim. Pick any year in the 90s and run it against any year in the past decade. I'm completely right and you're completely wrong. Pick any example.
>muh unicorns
>spend time arguing about these shows
Nice try deflector-san but I deal in facts not opinions.

It's objective fact that the high end ova market is a fetid corpse, and that the film market is smaller than it was in the 90s.
