What Okada needs is a series composer or director who understands her and is willing to challenge her on her ideas. Either that, or she's just really hard to work with and doesn't respond well to criticism. So many of the shitty choices she makes are things that should have been corrected in production. There's probably also a touch of George Lucas syndrome, where most of the people working with her are fans or admirers.

However she really is great at creating characters and writing friendships and relationships. I dream of the day when she becomes a healing-type writer.

I'm just kind of tired of current anime in general I'm realizing. Too much playing it ridiculously safe with a lot of the same damn hack staff, cast, concepts and character archetypes and designs trying to make shit that will sell which in the Japanese BD market doesn't give you a lot to work with and even then what "sells" is far from a guarantee. Even the sorts of things that used to be kind of guilty pleasures for me kind of just aren't really doing it anymore at least in terms of getting me to want to spend half an hour a week to watch the shit just to see a couple fanservice scenes or action set pieces or whatever which is how most anime feels constructed now. Like I loved the first 3 seasons of Jojo and I don't even feel compelled to get on DIU all that quickly if at all because I've already watched like 75 episodes of the franchise in the last few years already. Likewise Macross I've seen every series to date and am already about 3 episodes behind on Delta and I would have adored something like Kabaneri even a few years ago as a guilty pleasure with some tropes and concepts I kind of like but right now it just feels like a construct and I'm just sick to death of Sawanodrop for every single action blockbuster so his score is kind of just making me roll my eyes and not want to watch it.

Just something about the way anime gets made now and the market saturation of certain ideas, franchises, concepts and people has made it immensely dull of late. Apparently the Japanese fanbase and online Western one just tires of these things far slower or maybe it just hasn't been following anime as long as I have to reach that point yet. Or maybe they are considering how much the BD market has dropped off which I find it hard to believe is entirely due to the economic situation. I maintain it's equal parts just getting old for me after like 2 decades of watching it and the shows and conceit with which they are produced just kind of blowing now.

It's extremely surprising if not looking like the biggest surprise flop of the year because Aniplex gave it an event ticket and tons of ad backing and it's doing things that you'd think would normally result in it selling to the otaku and fujo that actually buy anime but it's just not at all. It's currently on it's way to being a surprisingly rare mega flop for them on a level worse than even Classroom Crisis and Punch Line which is odd because they almost always focus on appeals and packaging they know is like 99% guaranteed to sell at least at break even level. It's also one of the earlier releases of the season in like only 4 more weeks which means it should be doing significantly better than it is. Even more crazy is I think it's in their timeslot on Saturday that 2ch refers to as the "hegemony" slot which almost always contains the top selling show of a given season that is given the most aggressive marketing campaign, but I'll also say their output tends to really suffer in Spring which it just so happens is when their last big original flops Punch Line and Plastic Memories aired and when we also got Gunslinger Stratos the last not really by Gen Urobuchi show to do horribly.

Lately (as in almost everything post Madoka Magica) when it comes to anime they've been getting their asses saved almost entirely by red hot licenses with fanatically loyal fanbases buying the product regardless of quality or being low enough down on the production committee and decision making process not to be able to make too many insanely bad production decisions like with Kabaneri, Uta No Prince, Fate, EFP etc. It's no wonder they're going into shell mode soon with stuff like Touken Ranbu, Granblue Fantasy, more Fate, SAO, and more NisioIsin stuff which is unquestioningly absolutely guaranteed to sell well. 2ch has pointed out that the only character from it that seems slightly popular so far is the main one. Anyway Aniplex just utterly blows at making mainstream tier hit original franchises post Madoka because they always seem to miss the point of it all in their mad quest for otaku money. Just because you have some similar staff and concepts as a recent major hit does not mean you are going to end up at the same place if you don't realize what it was that made those things a hit in the first place. At best it's looking like it's catching the runoff from being in one of the selling genres of late but these things need an extra appeal to them to reach GuP status otherwise their ceiling is usually like 6-7K.

Kabaneri is doing well and is popular because it has elements and staff attached to it that are specifically designed and/or proven to be as popular as possible, not because of it's similarities to Titan. They seem pretty trendy currently and like they really understand the BD market but we've all seen how things can go south in this industry in a flash and how a studio or producers fortunes can change by the season or even sometimes by the episode. Look at Kyoani, for the longest time in the late 2000's people were convinced they'd emerge in this decade as the de facto industry trend leader and usher it into the new age of global relevance at it's forefront and now they're just barely clinging to their own relevancy in Japan in the face of ever increasing and overwhelming competition in pandering for otaku and fujo bucks from outfits with a hell of a lot more capital and publicity power than they can hope to muster. At this rate their legacy will be remembered as being the first outfit to realize how you could make tons of money by appealing to a niche audiences with meta level cleverly marketed LN shit and moe girls, sell a ton of BD's to inflated levels of critical acclaim and not have to worry about traditional complicated things you'd expect out of TV serials like world building, intriguing plot progression and character development all that much. Really none of those things have been particularly relevant for late night anime in the decade since Kyoani figured out the quick formula toward success using moe back in 2006.

Osomatsu almost feels like a show that got popular as a sort of mainstreamers bring back the showa Era of anime protest buy too. It made appealing to everyday people look practically effortless with Gintamas director at the helm but the rest of the industry is too clueless or stubborn really to follow suit except maybe for Sunrise who has about the best ability to hit non otaku audiences of any outfit currently. This is more about the preorder rankings on webshops other than Amazon.

Kabaneri (the top line in the pic) is ranking at every online shop whereas Sansha Sanyou (the bottom line) is barely in the top 1000 at Rakuten and somehow is 20th at Softmap, even better than Kabaneri's 23rd at Softmap.

I was curious if Softmap's preorder exclusive bonus for Sansha Sanyou is way better than all other webshops resulting in the otaku all buying from there.
