The way I see it, SAO did three things well. First of all, it offered a lot of fleeting glimpses of what could have been, if it wasn't cancerous as shit. Second, it launched a thousand imitators and formed the genre. Last, it did really well and illustrated that the best way to make a successful story in the genre was to make it terrible.

So, the possibility exists. Moeblob, however, is to dependent on the superficial and trivial to coexist with strong storytelling.

Yeah, this. As long as you've got the outcome of one season directly effecting the next one, you can't really aim for anything other than quick twelve-episode payoffs, which sort of discourages things like worldbuilding and character development. It also encourages cookie cutter stories - currently, trapped in a vidya game, battle academy, and CanKancer.

That said, I'm not sure the current studios have the working capital for that risk - which isn't a problem here.

Also, if you start a story finish it and finish it with finality. No more of this one season hoping for a second season open ended shit. Just make your story as is.

But the industry does some things right, like overall way better working conditions, more reliance on TV ratings (hence encouraging good writing, directing, storyboarding, visuals etc) and less reliance on merchandising (ironic considering saturday morning cartoons used to be glorified commercials for toys), budgets are generous, animation is really fluid, animators are given a lot more time to actually animate and things at least attempt to be engaging to people besides otaku manchildren.

Basically anime needs to be weened off of merchandising and try to figure out how to make their money by being engaging to a wider audience. Combine Western goals with Japan's willingness to experiment with animation instead of just slavish only use 3/4ths perspective. Less LN/VN adaptions made to sell merchandise of the girls to an obsessed minority of viewers, more strongly written and directed original works that try to engage a broad audience. And let's not talk about the PPG reboot.

Almost always never works. Its better to have a target audience that will enjoy your work rather than trying to reach out to an audience that most probably won't give back.

It's definitely risky but the payoff is immense if it works. And anime occassionally does do that, I'm not a fan of either work but DN and AoT reached a huge international audience by taking a risk and trying to deliver something higher-budget with wide appeal.

So it's really just a matter of safe money small returns vs big risk big returns. The safe option is that anime stays in its rut of light novel harem adaptions that's slowly sinking its way into grindy p2w cellphone game tie-ins.
