Nah, Schwarzesmarken has some of the most morally unambiguous characters and situations in all of ML. There is nothing bad about Katia, and every single action Beatrix or Axmann takes must be evil. It's why some people attacked it for reading like bad, childish fanfiction when compared to any of Kouki's material, where even Yuuko and Sagiri were portrayed sympathetically.

TE has a shorter shoestring budget compared to SM. I don't really adore SM or TE as much as the original trilogy. The characters aren't as compelling and I felt it didn't feel Muv Luv enough for me. Now with TE it's decent. If you want TSFs killing BETA go right ahead and watch it. It's also a harem. Soundtrack is OK it's nothing worth writing home about. Maybe besides that one insert song that I forgot when it played. Still though none of the songs come close to Tsubasa or Carry On.

The worst thing about it was the wasted potential. It could have been amazing and done something great and completely different with the setting; it was merely good.

The first step would be to, as much as possible, forget the Original Trilogy. Not because it was bad, but because you're not writing a personal tragedy. We're aiming for something a bit... bigger. Alternative was a story about a boy. This is a story about a war.

Episode 1 goes entirely. If the Invasion Of Japan is used as the opening, it has to be restructured entirely to introduce a significant fraction of the entire cast, maybe over a longer span of time. The whole point of this sort of thing is that the world is too big for one character to monopolize the first two episodes. We can bump Yuuya's age up a little to justify having him in a frontline Tactical Armor unit, and then basically remove the whole racial tension thing, except maybe in Japan, with Japaneses. Because it really ruined the first third of the show.

Then, we shift to (or open at) The Prominence Project. The fitting thing happens, but from the beginning the focus of it is that the Scarlet Twins are dangerously close to stating and Actual Shooting War. This is of greatest concern to the Soviet officers we see, as they can't afford for things to escalate that far; they'd have to back down, and that would kill the effectiveness of their saber-rattling.

Yuuya breaks into the cockpit and hijacks the plane, averting the crisis, and lands. He is then given his mission.

He will test-pilot the Joint Strike Surface Fighter. Somehow, he is expected to help make this insane kitbash of half a dozen combat doctrines and mission profiles into something that can do some real good. For a reasonable cost.

He also meets the head of the XFJ project the hanger over. She's kind of a bitch, but he expected nothing less from Japan.

It did get grating at times, but to be honest, it DOES figure into Yuuya's background quite a bit. It's just it's approached with about as much tact as you'd expect from Japan.

I think someone here mentioned it's more a sort of narrative of/for Hapas than the mixed-race narrative of an American child.

That Yuuya didn't even really make it known he was Southern, let alone American but by crude sort of stereotypes didn't really help matters. And them trying to make excuses for Yui's behavior even when it was extremely crude and unbecoming didn't help matters.

We work that in, though. Yuuya's childhood suffering was more passive than active. Something was always missing other than just his father, and Yuuya's attitude towards Japan is more acerbic skepticism than anger. His opinions of Japanese TSFs are pre-existing and based on much more rational criticisms of their design objectives and combat doctrine.

On the other hand, his contempt for the Japanese Kinda-Sorta Democratic Republic is much more... intense. Particularly, the IRG, which embodies all the low points of Japanese military science. Therefore, his first conversation with Yui goes adequately, until he figures out that she's IRG rather than IJA.

He says that design is a job for professional soldiers, that an overprivileged noblewoman with no idea how a real war works has no place in it, and that a system of nepotism which puts her in charge is begging for disaster.

She receives this as well as could be expected.

The irony is that while she has more practical experience (Here, Yuuya has some, maybe), that wasn't what he was referring to, and he outclasses her on subjects like logistics, support structures, fire support, operational demands, and so forth. The key is that both of them were making rational arguments, but their radically different starting positions and then rapidly escalating personal dislike made an actual discussion impossible.

I guess it's really hard to see that though, considering how they set up the Yui vs Yuuya dynamic. It's like they want you to go in feeling sorry for Yui, and then making you feel sorry for Yuuya, but of course the former should always outweigh the latter. And it's all couched in subtext, and considering ML itself (not characters in universe, but the actual tone) doesn't really ever go out of their way to point out how stupid the Imperial Guard is, all Yuuya's criticism falls flat.

It's hard to describe really, the emotional disconnect I feel vs what they're trying to get me to feel. Combine that with the personal narrative that doesn't fit Yuuya, but more like one written outside of his perspective, and you just get this mess.

I love TE, it's just some things really fall flat. The fact his dad didn't actually abandon him just makes him look like even more of a jerk, and you just get this impression he's an arrogant brat who doesn't understand others.

As far as I understood it, the Valkyrie data was just a readout of what the superior knew. Which was how all the hives were laid out, numbers of BETA, orders to be given, etc. The real advantage it gave them was that they now knew what to expect in every hive or at least how all hives were as of 01/01/2002, instead of having to make projections based on the Volk data. I could be remembering wrong though.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure that the Volk Data, at least in its usable current form, is a composite of records of all Hive Infiltration attempts thus far. Minisk Hive was only a Phase II when they attacked it and that was a long time ago, so just the orginal records wouldn't be all that useful.

They keep the name in honor of the original Volk Division, because they were the first.

It still works better

after ouka they manage to succeed in capturing 2 hives which is a great improvement considering that they even can't barely win without using super weapons awhile ago. Sure it maybe just layouts and some technical data about how BETA moves on hives and might be useless someday but it still works

It's stupid that even with everything, the anime seems to take a harsher tone on Beatrix and Lise than Axmann. Axmann is an asshole, but he's still pragmatic, intelligent, likable in a strange way, and doesn't gloat over losing his men. His atrocities and vileness are usually just brought up matter-of-factly before being ignored, versus Lise or Beatrix who's negative traits are lingered on and reinforced in every scene. Axmann comes off as evil, but never over the top like everyone else.
