The early digital stuff looked bad mostly because it was still standard definition with 480i resolution. The stuff made after 2006 or so looks fine because it is made at 720 or 1080p. Anime (and animation as a whole) just rushed too quickly to become digital. So some good shows like Princess Tutu cannot be put on blu ray.

Its one of the best anime I've seen in 22+ years of watching anime. Provided you watch the original, unedited subbed version. It is still the best example of 'slice of life' I've seen. Though CardCaptor Sakura, Kimi ni Todoke and Cross Game come close.

To be honest, its worth watching just for the reaction images. But it has plenty more going for it.
