SRS BSNS mech discussion.

Ever wondered where the Type-94 keeps it's extra ammo?

According to the Unit Organization chart, it can carry up to 12 chaingun magazines and 4 6-shit cannon mags in its skirt armor blocks, but apparently only Impact Guards and Rush Guards routinely carry nearly that much.

Why the hell did she tell the mechanics she was going to have them tortured to death for the lulz when she no longer had a use for them? I mean, she was using them to maintain her MiG. Wouldn't telling them that she was going to slowly kill them make them more likely to try to fuck her over or be uncooperative? It makes no fucking sense at all. If you're going to torture them, just do it, don't gloat to them about it, then charge them with repairing and restocking your machinery.

I feel like this anime insults my intelligence.

>>
>>141098391
>>141098448
I think one of my big problems with this show is the implication that human nature is only influenced by what happens to people. I believe that it is a combination of factors, you know, both Nurture and Nature. The anime tells us that Lise was once a sweet girl, but then turned into a ridiculously evil sadist thanks to Beatrix and Axmann. I can buy that she'd become a horribly scarred person who'd become callous to the pain of others, what I don't buy is that she'd enjoy it.

Since ML Stasi seem to draw more influences from the SS than RL Stasi, I'll use the SS as a comparison for how you do realistic evil, and not stupid evil like Lise. The SS did all sorts of fucked up shit, very similar to what the stasi do in the show. The thing which made them human and relatable, despite being evil as fuck, is that most of them didn't enjoy doing it. They mentally distanced themselves from the ethnic cleansing through a variety of means, and suicide rates were higher among the civilian shooters. It was one of the reasons Hitler came up with the concentration camp scheme.

A sprinkling of a few sadist here and there can make things interesting, but SM portrays every single stasi as a stupid evil, disloyal douchbag willing to fuck over the guy next to him. Such an organization as ML Stasi would never be able to function and would collapse under the weight of it's own stupid evilness as more pragmatic factions exploit and rip it to shreds long before it became a threat. It's actually very costly to go around punching babies all the time and can be bad for publicity. Hiroki really should know better, being a huge history buff and all. The RLF was better characterized if you ask me

Going back to Lise though, I don't think sadist are created, but born, so the only way Lise could be as fucked up as the anime portrays is if she always had that spark of insanity in her and the stasi let it out.

– This story has the deadly fight against the alien BETA, but at the same time there are political elements mixed in, and it’s a very serious atmosphere. How did you try to portray this atmosphere?

Watanabe: This is historical fiction, so for places like the Soviet Union and West and East Germany, we based them off their real-life counterparts to a certain extent. It was a very challenging project. There were areas where we wondered if it was OK to do this. After getting involved in this project, I learned that the Stasi (East German secret police) that appears in the story was a real organization. They did some truly horrific things. There are people who really did suffer. When I thought about that, I was very concerned about how we should go about portraying this.

If you want to show the evils of an organization, you portray the characters as human as possible. You show the guy who's pulling teeth and executing people is a normalish, someone the audience can kind of relate too. Someone who has loved ones, has his own ideals, has his own virtues and vices, but is compelled to do evil by a corrupt and shitty system. He may justify his actions, he may feel guilty over it, or he may feel nothing, but it's the system keeping him chained to evil.

You know what I mean. Showing her in the worst light possible, using the most ominous music, revealing that even the other stasi were horrified over her, making it clear that she wasn't a victim but a victimizer, using every technique they could throughout episodes 07-09 to make us hate her, then trying to make us feel bad for her at the very end of episode 10 by ignoring all the above just reeks of bad directing.

It's why the majority of people were happy when Theo killed her and were confused about the abrupt tone shift to sympathetic. That many agreed with Suzy and did not understand why the anime portrayed what she said about Lise to Theo as a negative further reinforces this. Beatrix gets hit by this too, but not to the same extent as Lise.

You can't just swap from a scathing tone to a sympathetic one without buildup. It'd be more obvious in a story, say, where a character was described with tons of words with negative connotations and every action was portrayed negatively, and then the next chapter, everything he does is shown in the most positive light possible with no evolution in between.

We didn't get Lise spilling all of Theo's embarrassing secrets.

Like that Iris is the same kind of busty blonde onee-san type that he was(is?) attracted to, or (when he tries to deflect this) that he had posters in his room of busty blonde onee-sans while he was a student, or that Lise took the responsibility of removing those posters.

She says all of this in front of the entire team by the way, including Iris.
>>
>>141106543

The characters aren't fleshed out as well, but the story is transferred pretty well.

A lot of people get upset because Beatrix and Lise get hit the hardest by losing the details.

I don't think even with 24 episodes we could have fitted in all the character development adequately.

Ah, but I'm a Phamfag.

Though I am a Beato secondary, but even then, that would change nothing.. Theo had a hard life, like many others. I wouldn't really begrudge most of the cast for the way they are. Some I do, but they are few. That's part of the tragedy, recognizing that the actors could not deviate from their roles.

It takes extraordinary will, love, faith, and belief to defy such an inhuman system with a smile, and with hope for he better day. Theo, Theo changed. He started to awake, and for that he should be admired I think. True bravery isn't because you fear not death or loss, but knowing that, and going on despite that. That should be admired, we should be proud of that!

The true measure of man is the soul, the heart within, that no man can degrade!
>>
>>141107724
Lise and Iris feel really off, like all the charm has been sucked out. It's the details which bring them to life. Neither are as funny as they should be, and Iris is too much of an ice queen. I only heard one bad joke from Iris in the whole anime. I'm not sure about Beatrix. She feels more bloodthirsty and much less sexy. Even her voice sounds rougher and more course. She doesn't "ara~ara uhehehe" once in the anime.

This >>141107891 to a certain extent.

Lise is also supposed to be more adorable, for example. Think of the boat scene during Operation Neptune, for example. Instead of the routine "onii-chan, people keep thinking I'm a spy" conversation, VN Lise comes up to Theo and Katia being showing blatantly obvious signs of seasickness, making (admittedly cute) moaning sounds, and basically saying "Onii-chan... help... (sick moan)."
>>
>>141107996
And guess who they would have thus taken, and made him watch?

Remember, they go for any weakness. For Lise, neither physical nor sexual torture worked on her. So they got her in the one way they could.

I don't know about the crotch piece but you can remove the limbs on a nendoroid. You have to take them apart to get the shipping plastic out that keeps the painted sections from rubbing against each other during transit. If you just want to bully Yui by amputating her arms and legs I guess you can do that too.

I would never have a quadruple amputee Yui unless I had an Annette around to make sure she stayed healthy and clean while I was plotting the end of the world.

Apparently the only trait he seemed to have that defined him as American was when his buddy thought he was going to hit Yui, and him being a braggart and arrogant.

More importantly, the U.S. hasn't been screwing itself by sending sixteen-year-old girls to die on the front lines. If you do that, your birthrate is going to start to suffer pretty quickly, and then you will eventually face all the problems of a rapidly aging population on top of a massive bug war.

Well, that's not what happened.

A second BETA landing touched down in south-central Canada shortly after the the Kashgar landing, about four hundred miles north of the U.S. border. Having six years of experience dealing with this kind of shit on Luna, the U.S. removed the problem.

>And because they wanted to shut down the XFJ plan

I'm not sure why you think the XFJ plan was worth that effort. If they wanted to shut it down, they could have just... shut down the program.
>>
>>141124291

It's not luck, they nuked the living shit out of the Saskatchewan hive

>but that's in Canada

There are no natural barriers between the Saskatchewan hive and the United States. If they hadn't destroyed it immediately, the heartland of the United States would have been overrun.
>>
>>141124561

By nuking them into oblivion, which begs the question why no one else did since it's clearly trivial to accomplish
>>
>>141124561
>I'm not sure why you think the XFJ plan was worth that effort. If they wanted to shut it down, they could have just... shut down the program.
You can question it all you want but it was made very clear that America sent them their to shut down the program.
>>
>>141124658
And they lucked out by having the BETA land outside their homeland. Most other countries had BETA land inside or directly in their borders where they couldn't just nuke them.
>>
>>141124561
They probably allowed the program so the could closely monitor and steal japan's new railgun. Once they had the data they sent the Infinities to shut down the program.
>>
>>141124700

Because the gooks decided that the failure of the U.S. (and company) to stop the BETA on Luna was because of Running Pig Dog Imperialist Stupidity rather than zerg rush and death laser spam. So they refused U.N. and international aid and tried to capture the Kashgar Hive to monopolize the alien technology.

It did not go well.

The Red Army tried to respond, but was killed to man.

With their conventional forces now non-existent, the commies resorted to nukes, but the BETA were spread out consolidating their gains had deployed a lot of lases, and the communists states lacked enough mechanized forces to exploit the damage caused by the nukes.

This is why Beatrix thinks nuclear weapons are ineffective.

>>141124905

Nope, there was only the one successful landing in China. Everybody else got invaded the old fashioned way.

Also, even for Canada, nuking was the preferable outcome when the alternative is everyone being

>>141125078

>>
>>141124905

The Beta only landed in Kashgar and Saskatchewan. They spread on foot to the other places because the Soviets and Chinese were greedy pricks who wanted to farm the Kashgar hive for G-element instead of nuking it into oblivion.

Tbh the unreliable part is that the United States didn't Nuke Kashgar themselves when the commies refused to.

The U.S. was probably only the Kingmaker in WWI. France and England might still have been able to win on their own, depending on how much the territory Russia ceded to Germany helped them work around the British blockade.

As for WWII... The U.S. played a much larger role, and the Soviets were barely a factor in the Pacific theater.

The Raptor wasn't even at its midlife update cycle yet, and the XFJ was basically the high performance resource hog the US explicitly turned down, the Black Widow. The US was probably also already looking at a new TSF as soon as possible, after they replaced their F-15 fleet with the Raptor. And it doesn't matter if you've got 1 XFJ when the US has 20 Raptors each for it.

Well, it worked for them because the chaos of the Revolution(s) allowed them to win the Eastern Front and focus on the Western Allies.

And the German Empire ceased to exist after WWI, so while it hurt the Third Reich, it never had a chance to negatively effect them.

Yeah, the Volks Division had a full TSF regiment. They were in their long enough they could have detonated a nuke inside before the end, especially considering their battle plan more or less indicated that they knew it was a suicide mission.

When they stressed the importance of 19 days? It took 19 days for laser-class to be used. If they were already using laser-class on the moon then they would use it instantly on kashgar.

If laser-class was used on the moon to shoot down things then the moon war would be lost. They lack the heavy weaponry to barge their way through the laser defense and destroy them. And space ship that is coming in to land is at the risk of getting shot down.

>If they were already using laser-class on the moon then they would use it instantly on kashgar.

Oh, for a second there I though you were going to say something intelligent.

What they were referring to was the fact that the lasers were deployed at Kashgar as an emergency measure, because lasers are not normally produced at Hives below Phase IV. Kashgar, a Phase I (presumably) landing unit was not a Phase IV Hive, and should not have been deploying lasers.

That's what they were stressing.

>If laser-class was used on the moon to shoot down things then the moon war would be lost.

Well, it certainly wasn't going super-great when we evacuated.

>And space ship that is coming in to land is at the risk of getting shot down.

This is true. But as long as you maintain a large enough perimeter, the distances involved and the greater curavture of the Moon compared to Earth make it workable.

>They lack the heavy weaponry to barge their way through the laser defense

The same dust that apparently caused problems for the human forces on the moon would function like free AL smoke, and the lack of an atmosphere for convection/conduction cooling would hammer the ability of lasers to maintain high rates of fire.

They'd be nasty, but not an instant win.

The Sherman is also a meme tank that explodes when you look at it funny.

The U.S. Medium Tank, M4 used in WWII was an good, if not great, combat vehicle that was capable of engaging most Axis armored vehicles, and doing so well when its superior reliability, ease of maintenance, and procurability are considered.

It did an excellent job of fulfilling it's intended role of a component of the combined arms system of the U.S. military in the European Theater in WWII. However, despite the vast numbers in which it was produced, the majority of the internet has never heard of it.

Probably because they're the same fucking tank.>The M4 Sherman, officially Medium Tank, M4, was the most numerous battle tank used by the United States and some of the other Western Allies in World War II. In spite of being surpassed by German medium and heavy tanks late in the war, the M4 Sherman proved to be very reliable, cheaper to produce and available in greater numbers

>>
>>141127467

Nah, it's fine.

The other thing is that the Sherman Meme Battle Tank was designed for the same missions with the same goals as the German tanks.

Conversely, as I understand, the M4 wasn't built for anywhere near the same role as most of the German medium panzers, let alone the heavies. The U.S. saw tanks best used alongside motorized or mechanized infantry, various tank-destroyers and SPGs, and (prehaps most critically) Close Air Support.

For there, you can make a decent case that if the U.S. discovered that the Germans had a new Liger supertank with frontal armor totally immune to the M4's 75mm cannon and so forth, they would have been justified in not scrambling to replace their own tank.

Because they'd just have someone drop a thousand-pound bomb on it.

Well, I don't think there is anyone saying were doing a very good job of it at that point, and having to build everything in caves with slave labor was doing a number on their output quality. Along with the lack of materials, that's why the Me 262 had engines being write-offs at twelve hours of flight time.

Then there's the fact of volume to consider, and the plunge it took. You also can't forget transit infrastructure; destroying marshaling yards and rolling stock makes has a multiplicative effect on the headache of everything else.

Fuel targets can't be ignored either - there are Germans who cite the loss of fuel plants and oil refineries as being one of the biggest problems.

But Operation STARVATION, along with MEETINGHOUSE and reenactments, sort of seal the deal that it can work.

Not really a survival trait. It helps him more than once, sure, but at the end of the day he's having to resort to that cause he's the one wanting to play Superman.

He even says it himself right in the books, he could just do the thing most wizards do in-setting, which is get a day job, pretend they're not that special and continue their studies/research in their labs in secret, but no. He's the one who wants to be Mr. Big Badass Hero when his chosen careers don't even have to involve that (wizard/private detective)
>>
>>141132076
I think one of the issues is is that actual political movements tend to view themselves in the right, and tend to have a sort of unity in their common cause. The stasi don't, and every stasi character is shown to be an impulsive sadist who can't keep their torture boner in their pants and/or highly selfish and only out for themselves. Common sense would dictate that such an organization would be so dysfunctional as to not to be a major threat to anyone.

He's riding a cyborg dinosaur, and the image is clearly from tumblr.

Anyway, you can compare how well similar themes were handled between works of fiction, but if you're trying to argue that a fictional character should have behaved in a different manner, you have to draw examples from the real world.

That's common ground for everyone. Anything can happen in fiction regardless of what is possible or plausible, and I have to be familiar with that particular work of fiction to know if your example is valid or not.

That's the problem alright . If it was his intention to make a good vs. evil story, then fine. But Requiem and BiS and the mans own claims that he wanted some moral ambiguity make it unworkable. If you want moral ambiguity you don't make a side so obviously, stupidly evil.

>>
>>141132645

Yeah, basically. Now examine why the Soviets did that. If you don't understand the motivations behind atrocity, you won't understand why they occur in the first place, and you won't be able to prevent them from happening again.

In the case of the Soviets, there were a lot off steps to it. Soviet leadership had been purged several times between 1920 and 1953, and every officer had a sword hanging over his head at all times.

(Sometimes this worked out. Solzhenitsyn got sent to gulag for writing rude things about Stalin in his letters. His Artillery Battery was subsequently wiped out in the Battle of Berlin.)

The Soviets also used intense propaganda to ensure their soldiers would brutalize German civilians, and only stopped when it became politically inconvenient.

I'm not saying everyone should always walk free, but prevention is more important than punishment.
This thing about prosecuting everyone who was present at Auschwitz, for instance, as accessories to 400k murders, it's absurd on its face, especially since they were mostly teenagers at the time.
>>
>>141096836
I'm guessing there's an official explanation, but why are they using hands? Why not have the whole arm as the weapon, instead of a held weapon that can be disarmed and needs to be fed from time to time? Why not have the ammo inside the thing, not hanging around outside? I guess it's because the enemy will aim for the whole arm and the TSF will be completely helpless, or structural limits and too many moving parts, but I think there's more to that.

Your "Official explanation" is the rule of cool.

Everyone in this thread realizes giant robots are completely impractical as warmachines, no one is under any illusions (unless you're talking about holdouts from /m/) and the only way they become practical is if you introduce caveats into the setting itself, even Gundam, the most famous mecha series of them all has "Minovsky particles" ours is the Laser-kuns.

I could say the same thing about you.

>The same dust that apparently caused problems for the human forces on the moon would function like free AL smoke, and the lack of an atmosphere for convection/conduction cooling would hammer the ability of lasers to maintain high rates of fire.

The thing is that laser class was not used on the moon as long range weapons. If they were then orbital bombardment would fail and be considerd ineffective. The loses agains the BETA would be even higher considering now they cannot use their limmited firepower to the maximum.

>This is true. But as long as you maintain a large enough perimeter, the distances involved and the greater curavture of the Moon compared to Earth make it workable.

Untill the heavy laser class get deployed whom got even further range and would enjoy the greater curvature. And the hives on the moon are not small

>Well, it certainly wasn't going super-great when we evacuated.
What, are you saying they were getting shot down?

>Kashgar as an emergency measure
Also because it was the first time the faced the laser-class. Mainly because the resistance on the moon was not strong enough that the superior would use laser-class to shoot down incoming projectiles and alike for fear of getting completely wasted at the start of contact with humans. All they want to do is mine the shit out of the moon while still being alive which they were doing at normal speeds.

If they were using laser-class on the moon as long range weaponry then it would mean the BETA was in a almost war-like mode already on the moon. It would mean they would already produce laser-class or have laser-class the moment they landed on kashgar and not wait for 19 days for the superior to get his shit together.

And you are acting as if humanity knows that landing units have no laser-class and they know what hives are and their structure and what kind of hive that produce laser-class in 19 fucking 73.
>they dont
>>
>>141133808

Oh, the TSFs are a design evolution of Manned Maneuver Units used for various tasks on the lunar surface, which are themselves derived from powered, neurological controlled space suits.

The U.S. developed the NCAF-X1 for lunar combat, and it was something of a kitbash, because wartime exigence is a bitch. It was doing pretty well, and then the BETA invaded Earth.

America then rushes a crash-development program, producing the YSF4H-1 test-type. But the team that was building the integrated cannon wasted their budget on hookers and blow (presumably) and it was not ready in time, so they just kept the original manipulator-hands as a stopgap, and it never went away.

Actually, you offer pretty abundant proof that you couldn't.

>aser class was not used on the moon as long range weapons. If they were then orbital bombardment would fail and be considerd ineffective. The loses agains the BETA would be even higher considering now they cannot use their limited firepower to the maximum.

This paragraph is not coherent. I can tell you think it means something, but it doesn't.

>laser class was not used on the moon as long range weapons.

This is never stated, and they've used lasers as an anti-artillery resume from the beginning on Earth. You're just making wild assumptions, because you are a spastic.

>the heavy laser class

Nope, more power doesn't let you ignore fucking geometry.

>What, are you saying they were getting shot down?

Not in the slightest.

>because it was the first time the faced the laser-class.

This is your assumption. There is nothing stating it to be true. I don't know why you want to believe this so badly.

>because the resistance on the moon was not strong enough that the superior would use laser-class to shoot down incoming projectiles and alike for fear of getting completely wasted at the start of contact with humans

What the fuck does this mean? That he was hiding his power level?

Also, there is nothing indicating that there was a Phase VI Hive and Superior on Luna in '73. So there is no reason to expect this sort of fake-strategy bullshit.

>normal speeds

Why do you assume six years of war is normal for a mining operation?

> they would already produce laser-class

What part of 'facilities limitation' do you not comprehend?

>And you are acting as if humanity knows that landing units have no laser-class and they know what hives are and their structure and what kind of hive that produce laser-class in 19 fucking 73

No, I'm not. What makes you think I am? Nothing I've said has to do with decisions any of the human leaders made, which is the only case where this could be at all relevant.

Okay.

This piece of shit they have on the top, the LV-2 can only fire 16 rockets before having to reload.

To match the firepower of 1 122-MM Rocket Launcher BM-21 which got 40 rockets you need 2.5 LV-2

To match the firepower that 1 Soviet Rocket Launcher Regiment which got 54 BM-21, got the collective power to launch 2160 rockets in one go all firing. You need 135 LV-2 vehicles.

Now throw in doing this on the moon and laser-class in the whole BETA horde and you got limited resources and transportation and production to sustain your fighting force.

No he was just mining and recycling carbon based lifeforms. He is not in warmode, if he was then we would have fortlaser-class on the moon as fast as possible.

>Also, there is nothing indicating that there was a Phase VI Hive and Superior on Luna in '73. So there is no reason to expect this sort of fake-strategy bullshit.
What makes you think there was no superior on the moon? If there was none then laser-class would not be used to shoot down projectiles. :^)

>Why do you assume six years of war is normal for a mining operation?
well they are not fighting, they are mining the moon and it takes time before they got power to send another landing unit to the next planet etc for more mining. It is not like they are getting pushed back to hive 01 on the moon right?

>What part of 'facilities limitation' do you not comprehend?
Oh shit I got these non-sentient lifeforms throwing explosives at me, I guess they come from that planet. Should I have laser-class on the landing unit or make it able to produce laser-class on the spot? Nah fuck it. Let them deal with that shit I dont give a fuck.

>Nope, more power doesn't let you ignore fucking geometry.
More curvature would benifit the heavy laser class. It would cover more area for it to fire.

>This is your assumption. There is nothing stating it to be true. I don't know why you want to believe this so badly.
Because then the chinese would not risk trying to capture kashgar unless they knew that landing units have no laser-class or they did not know that it existed in the first place because there is no report that there are laser-class on the moon since they are all underground breaking down rocks like good miners.

>>
>>141134187
There's the proper answer. Thanks, anon-kun.
>>
>>141135586
>So who controlled the beta on the moon? No one?

The Reactors, same as controlled them for ~28 years of warfare on Earth. You clearly missed the part where the Superior was a new development, and the BETA had functioned just find without it.

>>141135539

You're trying to apply a terrestrial paradigm of warfare, where things like atmospheric cooling and drag are taken for granted, to an environment where they don't apply. You also clearly don't know what you're talking about.

I could explain how the lasers would have much greater heat management problems on the moon, or how the lack of an atmosphere makes high-velocity and low-angle fire more viable, or reiterated the point about dust and the horizon.

I could make mention of the concept of a hard vacuum and what it does to exposed fluids, or of what that means for an organic system with a hole poked in it.

But I'm not going to do that, because I've tried, and you've demonstrated that you don't just don't get it, ESL-kun. There are plenty of ways it could be done, but you don't really care about them.

For some reason.
>>
>>141135593

Yeah. I like how it kind of recognizes the handwave, but still provides a good reason that incorporates that.

And it's not as if mounted weaponry never happened.
>>
>>141135961
Maybe you should accept the integral works and that the BETA are far more resistant to the hars lunar enviorment then humans.

And how the laser-class is even able to do what it does.
>>
>>141136043
There's also the fact that manipulators make them more 'human' like to operators, which can help a lot depending on the control mechanisms.

Plus manipulators are useful as hell. Hard for a mech without hands to get up if it falls over.
>>
>>141136119
>BETA are far more resistant to the hars lunar enviorment then humans

Right. Just like a submarine is far more resistant to high pressure than a human.

Now, put a little hole in the side of that submarine at depth and see how it goes.

>And how the laser-class is even able to do what it does.

Fuck thermodynamics, amirite?

(by the way, when you respond 'yes' to the above, you accept responsibility for explaining how we are then at all able to resist something capable of that, which is a big deal in a way you almost certainly do not understand - they probably wouldn't have any need to mine if they could)
>>
>>141136447
