Dragonball is the only manga. There is no DBZ manga. DB manga includes Cell arc, Namek arc, Saiyan arc, Piccolo arcs, and Buy arcs, all of which were treated seriously.

Dragon ball isn't supposed to be power scaled. Diehard fans don't seem to understand that it's not supposed to make any sense.

DB has spent more time in the Z era than the pre-Z era, and even the pre-Z era got more serious as it went on.
This whole "DB was never serious. The dub made it dark!" meme needs to stop. The series has always had a sense of humor, but it was never a total joke either.

The key word here is 'was', because Dragon Ball stopped being a gag manga even before the Raditz fight kicked off DBZ. It's a martial arts manga and has been for more than half of it's run time.
Calling DB a gag manga is like saying the Simpsons is a great show, but then remembering you have to specify that only 8 or 9 of the 6 gorillion seasons are any good.

Toriyama said in a Dragon Quest interview that his character design for games has more details simply because those characters don't have to be drawn all the time.
Even when he's not the one drawing, he still takes this in consideration.
