I think the reason why people got so mad is because they built up this cute relationship as kids. If the story had just been about saving her without the blushing and hand holding, I'm sure that people wouldn't have gotten so mad. There's also the problem that out of all the people she could've have ended up with, it was the trap classmate. This guy lost a chunk of his life saving them and they have no problem fucking while he's in a coma.

I was hoping it would at least go somewhere. One theory I had while watching it was that her feelings for him would grow too strong, contrary to his intentions, to the point that she would become unwilling to cooperate in her own rescue because she doesn't want to have to move away from Satoru. Even something as minor as that would have at least given the relationship stuff a bit of payoff. But the final product seems more like the writer changed his mind a bunch about what kind of story he was writing.
