So I just finished Gunbuster and everything was pretty awesome, as to be expected from Gainax, but the ending left me with a lot of questions.

>Gubuster #3 goes off, triggering a black hole

>both the protag girls survive, escaping the black hole

>make it back to earth after 12,000 earth years have passed them by

>float back to earth (from galaxies away) completely healthy and without any means of nourishment

How did any of this make sense??
>>
>>141062922
Time Dilation. It was 12k years for earth, but only a day or two at most for them.
>>
Can this be a general old anime thread? I'm about to watch Dirty Pair Flash and I'm pretty excited.
>>
>>141062992

I understand that, but how could they have possibly floated back from the galaxy of the aliens in under two days, that mustve been lightyears from earth.

The fleet had to warp to the place. I just

?????
>>
>>141062922
>How did any of this make sense??

watch the gunbuster science lesson omake. it's all about time dilation at high sub-light speeds. for them only a few hours passed, but they spent those hours travelling at speeds very close to c, so on earth's intertial frame of reference 12,000 years pssed
>>
>>141063075
From an observer from earth, it took them 12,000 years to drift back, but they were moving fast enough that it only took a few days for them. Time is relative.
>>
>>141063070
Yeah sure

Lets make this a general old anime thread

Ive been going through gainax's old work like Otaku no video

other movies like akira, ghost in the shell, all the lupin movies etc

trigun, the green jacket series, all good shit

You guys have any top favs?
>>
>>141063075
it's implied that they used a warp for the majority of the trip, but had to travel at relativistic speeds during the short amount of time they needed to escape the black hole bombs event horizon (recall back to the episode where they made a big deal about being off schedule for a few seconds on that sub light speed rocket booster to jupiter -- they lost like 6 months or something because of that)
>>
>>141063230
watch bubble gum crisis (+crash) oav series
>>
>>141063180
>>141063192
>>141063243

Hmm, well I guess I never considered that they were going around lightspeed being that they were traveling in the busted remains of their gunbusters. That would make it easy enough for me to suspend my disbelief.

Hmm well I guess that checks out enough to satisfy me.

Is diebuster worth watching as a continuation of the series?

It wasn't the sublight speed travel that caused them to lose time. They warped out. It was because they had to get extremely close to an extremely massive object that caused them to lose so much time.

bubble gum crisis is a 7 episode OAV (it's the original series)
bubble gum crash is a 3 episode continuation of the above
AD Police is a 3 episode side story in the same continuity
Bubble Gum Crisis 2033 is a 2-cour TV series that reboots (remakes) the franchise

2033 was OK for what it was. But what you want to watch is the 7 episode OAV (i.e. the original)

except Jupiter isn't supermassive and you don't magically get more time dilation by turning that mass into a singularity. it was the extended use of C that caused the dilation

They're mostly all long (50+), take themselves too seriously, have annoying characters and boring plots. There are some watchable Gundam (like Turn A), but in general, it's not worth getting in to.

If you haven't seen them yet, I greatly suggest Devil Hunter Yoko and Genmu Senki Leda. Both are very solid with great female protags.

I just finished episode one of Dirty Pair Flash and man, I really have to say that the one thing I miss the most from older series are the well executed, flashy chase scenes. I wish more modern anime would do this, just give me a good chase scene and I'll be fucking happy. I don't think I've seen one in a currently airing anime in years.

Thanks for the recs

Yeah I agree, older anime had a certain touch with action scenes that hasnt quite carried over into our current modern selection (not that it hasnt at all, there is obviously some good good out there today)

I think it came with the 80s and 90s cheese, very cathartic

>>141064282

Alright thats also another one to add to the list!
>>
>>141064573

The day I see a flashy chase scene with modern animation techniques is probably going to be the day I die.

But I'm not going to hold my breath for it. With the current state of the anime industry and considering the current moe trend, I don't see those making a comeback for at least a few more years. Whats more, the flashy chase scenes seem to have been replaced by flashy fight scenes in action oriented series which isn't necessarily bad in and of itself, it certainly beats the usually awkward movement of old school fight scenes. But the problem that lies in that is that fight scenes just don't have as much potential for excitement. That is to say that there are only so many ways you can dodge a sword, etc, but a well choreographed chase scene in, say, a city has all kinds of potential.
>>
>>141063755
Don't listen to that guy. Gundam is a varied franchise and most people, even non-mecha fans, consider the original and Zeta great. Most of the UC OVAs are really good too. AU is a mixed bag.
>>
>>141065141

Hmm the most recent anime I can think of that comes close to it is probably the Cowboy bebop movie (maybe?) and the new lupin installment, The Woman Called Fujiko Mine

But you can always rely on Lupin for chases and old school spy shenanigans
>>
>>141065420

I don't remember the Fujiko Mine series having a chase scene, though I could be wrong. Jigen Daisuke's Gravestone looked like it probably had at least one great chase scene though so hopefully I get to watch it soon. Lupin never fails to deliver, thats a given, but it'd be nice to see other shows do something similar. For example, I just marathoned all the xxxHolic anime installments and given the hyper active animation any other time, I thought a nice chase scene through Tokyo would have been amazing but it never happened. It would have made for some great cameos too considering almost all of CLAMP's works are set in Tokyo so I feel like it was a wasted opportunity.

And yes Gravestone has an amazing chase scene. It's not quite Castle of Cagliostro levels of amazing chase scenes, but it's really nice and you feel the speed and hecticness of the situation.

>These opposing opinions have left me at great indecision.

Diebuster is a reasonable watch after Gunbuster. Various new anime production techniques were used for it. First of all, because Diebuster was a set of OVA episodes instead of being a TV series, each episode had a bit more freedom allotted to take advantage of the newer animation techniques since the original Gunbuster. Each episode was allowed to vary somewhat from other episodes in techniques used as long as the colour palette and characterizations were followed. Another was that each episode had different directors on adjacent episodes and they had some freedom to be different. Thus, you will see one episode has a more character driven plot than an action plot and vice versa.

As with Gunbuster, you should watch Diebuster to the very end.

----

As for something so old that it's "new" in terms of plot, the original Bubblegum Crisis 2032 is worth watching if you don't mind pure cel animation. It was inspired by Blade Runner. This is not the BGC 2040 reboot series which was quite sanitized of the anti-corporate big brother message of BGC 2032.

The BGC 2032 ova series comes in two sets. One is the BGC 2032 proper. Then there are several more ova episodes in the Bubblegum Crash set. Those two sets are what is considered to be the original Bubblegum Crisis series separate from the 2040 remake.

BGC set of voice actors were also good at singing (except for one of them). As a result, there are quite a few BGC music soundtracks released. Each ova episode also has its own opening and closing music vocal tracks. Bubblegum Crisis is available at BakaBT.

Picture: BGC armor suits had high heels. One application was that they would fasten onto other exoskeletons and motoroid transforming bikes as shown. That kept the legs from whipping around due to high-G maneuvers their gear was capable of doing.

Time dilation still confuses me very much to this day, it's like the whole concept of time dilation itself is just relative to just Earth.

Like, what about if there were two solar systems that were completely 100% identical to each other, and a person from the Earth from Solar System 1 traveled to the Earth in Solar System 2
>>
>>141064230

>>141071247

I've seen the first season, Mine Fujiko and I'm working on the second season. While I've definitely seen very little of the franchise I definitely like and appreciate it for what it is.

And I just finished the movie. I love the darker toned Lupin installments which I think is why I'm struggling to get through the second season, its so light hearted and while still enjoyable I don't think its the best way for Lupin to be. But no that chase scene had me rock hard, everything about it was great.

Was it just me or was that group who captured Fujiko definitely Illuminati? The homicidal sex robot reminded me far too much of the cremation of care ceremony and now I just want to talk about Lupin dealing with the Illuminati.
>>
>>141071648

Not even him, but I think it's legitimately funny that someone thinks they can judge almost 40 years of a franchise based off of QUALITY images of 79' they've seen over the years.

If you've seen War in Pocket and 08th MS Team and still think Gundam is trash, then whatever, it's you opinion. But until then, go munch on a lolcock.
>>
>>141071302

It doesn't have to be relative to Earth, rather it is relative to Earth as a consistent frame of reference.

In the instance of the two identical solar systems they are in the same frame of reference despite being separated by a great spatial distance.
>>
>>141062922

>>
>>141070109
That's a pretty good comparison, because I definitely saw Diebuster as more alike FLCL and that's one of the reasons I really don't like it.
>>
Diebuster is a prequel to everything. Nono split the black hole, which would have ended up causing another Big Bang. There was nowhere she could have taken it that would have saved everyone because it would have destroyed the universe, so she took it back to the beginning of time where it became THE Big Bang. So far this is logical necessity, but my headcanon likes to believe that Nono became God at that moment, and so in the far future Nono would become her incarnation. "If God wished for something, who would he pray to?" is a recurring theme, and at the end Nono finds the answer, which is that she should pray to Herself.
>>
>>141062922
I really liked how the ending of Diebuster tied into the ending of Gunbuster.
