It's hard because people always say, 'Follow your dreams,' but it's not a perfect world, and things don't always work out. But you've just got to work hard, and you can't take things for granted.

So the guide suggests getting done with basic grammar and 2K first before reading but does that really work? I am just 200 vocabs and a few chapters into the grammar guide and feel like I won't be able to recall it all unless I practice reading. What are your experiences?
>>
>>140947250
>>140948160
Thanks, I wasn't aware of Anonymous Core5K. I redid it with that as a data source and added the frequency information:

>>
>>140956937
Yes
>and feel like I won't be able to recall it all unless I practice reading.
If you try reading now you will pretty much be slamming your head against a figurative wall rather than exposing yourself to words/grammar that you already know to reinforce them. If you don't know Core2k, you won't know the vast majority of words you see. If you haven't finished Tae Kim then you won't understand the vast majority of grammar you see. Reading is very important but it is not productive or necessary at a stage as early as yours.

>>140956956
Good stuff.
>>
>>140956937
The idea is to give you a foundation before you jump into real material. I doubt anyone here has done scientific studies on whether that's more effective than just reading from the beginning. In the end you just have to try different things and see what works for you instead of slavishly doing what worked for someone else.

Slang, Kansaiben, supposing if, even if that's true, thanks to... Just add new grammar you learn. Or add the words which are necessary to understand the grammar to core.
I sometimes read on Maggies site and add stuff and downloaded some grammar books. Many people here only do Core and have a high pace. Just read for 30 minutes each day in a grammar book and do 1h reviews instead of 2h or something.

Is it taught that 大(おお) and 王(おう) are pronounced the same?
>>
>>140962983
to be honest its been a while since ive seen a question about the classic おお vs おう

there is no pronunciation that is taught they are said fundamentally different in accordance to normal speech dude
>>
>>140962983
Just throwing this out there, since I've done hardly any listening practice.

But I think I've sometimes heard a slight bounce in double characters. So I think おう is just basically おー, while おお has a slight bounce between the two.

Read the formation tables and example sentences. If you feel like the concept is kind of weak for you, read the notes too.

From the DoJG:
>僕は静かな時しか本を読まない。
>I read only when it's quiet.

Why is 読む in the negative form here? Wouldn't that make the sentence mean "I, only when it's quiet, don't read" (i.e. "I read all the time except when it's quiet")?
>>
I just accidentally 露にした my ちんぽ in public...
>>
>>140971086

I don't think rikai defines it very well at all.

Especially since other cases where it only has that meaning in combination with negatives they write in parethesis "(when used with a negative)", like with あまり for example.
They don't do that for しか so it's easy to get confused thinking there's a double negative based on their description.
>>
>>140971485
Ah, that explains my confusion. Thanks.

Where did you learn that, by the way?
>>
>>140971623
I had a hunch it wasn't "only" because of しかし, so I googled [しか imabi]
imabi's guide is generally shit for actually learning but it's a pretty good reference for clearing up the incompetence of other guides
just like ixrec's is good for hitting the ground running with VN word usage (pronouns, made up verbal phrases, etc) despite being shit in general as well

Would it be translated as "I don't wanna"
Or as "I don't feel like it"
Or something else?
>>
>>140967354
How I use it:
I spilt the deck into two separate decks, one for recognition and the other for cloze delete.
Let's say this was the first day of usage-
1. Select recognition deck, read through the entirety of given entry, move on to next card. Do this for all new cards for the first time then on the second time when you click "good" or "again", to see them the next day or to restart the review process, I only read through the example sentences.
2. Select cloze delete deck, read concept description and using my fresh understanding of the concepts I've just read on the recognition cards, read the sentence aloud (this is just what I do) and use the correct grammar/pattern/concept.

On later days, I review the cloze delete deck review cards (not new cards) before reviewing the recognition cards. The cloze delete card review is the same process as their initial review, so it's pretty quick. Once all of the reviews are done, I stop, not reviewing new cards just yet. Instead I start to review the recognition cards, reading each entry/example sentence just like the second review on the first day of reviewing (not bothering to read the notes unless I really misunderstood it). From this point, once all of the review cards are done, for the new cards for the day I switch back to the original process of reading through the entire cards, notes and all. After all of those are done, I review the new cloze delete cards in the same fashion as the first day.

It is a looping process that allows me to test review concepts before reading back through them, so as not to sort of "cheat" myself out of not entirely testing my memory of them.

Oh, forgot to mention: the order and amount of cards for each deck is identical, otherwise it would be awkward, testing something I haven't yet read through fully. I went through the Basic cards at 15 cards a day and are currently going through the Intermediate cards but mining the unknown words in a different deck before hand.

読み方 (way of reading)
作り方 (way of making)
言い方 (way of speaking)
Substitute the Chingrish transliterations with whatever sounds more natural in the given context.

I finally finished Satsukoi. Only took 3.5 months. I started out really hating it, and probably should have quit, but now that it is over I think I enjoyed it. I thought there were too many sex scenes and that the school life parts dragged on too long. I now realize that they only seemed to drag on forever because of my slow pace and if I had read at a decent pace it would have been fine. The ending wasn't what I expected, but it was good and did not leave me disappointed.

I felt like I improved more reading Satsukoi than Flyable Heart. I attribute this to mining. Writers tend to use the same words over and over, so mining from what you are reading will make it noticeable faster and easier over time. By the last sex scene I felt like an anatomy professor and was moving through it relatively quickly. I'm really glad I started mining.

I'm regretting rating FH a 9 though. I shouldn't have gone so high for my first Japanese VN. I rated Satsukoi today, May 1, which was my goal, but VNDB recorded it as May 2. This is pissing me off.

Red > Brown > Yellow > Green

I disagree, I thought the ending was fairly poorly done. The revelation that he's going to die anyway weakens the impact and meaning of his sacrifice, and basically is thematically inconsistent with the central concept of sacrificing yourself for your loved one. The way people, both the mother and the friend, got so easily redeemed and forgiven after what they did, felt disappointing, weak and a cheap substitute to any actual conclusion to their plotline. And we didn't even get a proper little concert to end things off. Even Shoujo Ramune did it better.

Oh well. So what are you reading next, parakka?

I mostly agree with your points, it could certainly have been better, but I still enjoyed it. One of my favorite parts, despite it being really simple and not important, is how it fades back into the start screen at the end. I don't even know why I liked it.

I ended up reading for 6 hours today, because I definitely had to finish it today. I thought I was much closer to the end than I actually was.

I am considering two options at the moment.
1. Tonakoi, mostly because it is fairly short and I like the art. Most of the other VNs in my list are 2x-3x longer.
2. Read a light novel while I catch up on my mining backlog. Any word I mine today, I won't see for 4 months. So, I won't even see them until I finish whatever I'm mining them from. That doesn't feel very effective. Probably Zero no Tsukaima or Kino no Tabi.

I highly recommend not wasting your time reading a light novel, since they're all trash compared to VNs. And knowing your taste you probably won't like Tonakoi.

Don't try to learn form lyrics they literally make no sense half the time

Anon was just trying to understand a particular lyric, you fucking sperg. Nothing there suggests he is using song lyrics as a basis of his Japanese study.

Well one interpretation is that そっとしといて is a command so it's like "Leave it alone, if you poke it Satan will be born"
But really I think you're putting more thought into the lyrics than the songwriter did.

People who add every word are going to have much higher retention than people who only add words that have some level of difficulty. You should really get pretty close to 100% on any Core deck after a couple years of reading though.

Follow up post from the initial post, with Anki stats summary.
I've taken some inspiration from a post from a day or so after my initial post, in using a spreadsheet to track progress. It's been really handy in setting things out in a more visual plane. If you get into a more visual representation of progress, something like what that anon did and I copied, might help out your studies.
Google version of the spreadsheet, if anyone feels the need to sticky beak.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZSZ8Wobb3hup9vGY-kJSsG_DxIPVLzCOJvzH4KSwD94/edit?usp=sharing

I've marked the dates of the following updates:
16/05/2016
13/06/2016
08/08/2016
03/10/2016
28/11/2016
12/12/2016
I'll probably end up marking down things I started reading on given dates on the same spreadsheet and maybe give it a comment about difficulty. On the last update I'll provide a summary of how the study has helped with my Japanese proficiency and it might be able to serve as an example of maybe what to be able to expect. Kind of like watching an experiment in real time, albeit rather slow.

Have you read Genki?
I have, and it is trash. It is not made for self-learning, it is not made for learning at a reasonable pace, it is not made for gaining the ability to start reading Japanese texts and learning from them. It is made for classrooms so teachers can give time-wasting exercises to students to justify their existence without actually having to do anything. Stop recommending Genki ever.

I look forward to seeing what another few hundred consecutive days will look like in terms of proficiency then and now. It would be nice to share it with a like minded community working towards the same general goal but as evidenced by the anon who posted his study routine further up, the shitters in this thread at current are not here for anything but shitposting. Sad, I remember when anons would happily talk about the highs and lows of their progression, spurning other anons to do things like add to the reading list, etc.

DJT has undergone severe gentrification.

>>140982651
The text is all kana, meaning you have to have a decent grasp of grammar and a base vocabulary in order to make out different words, etc. from context. Not something I would recommend to a beginner unless they don't mind the frustration that it will entail or a lot of looking up move names, etc.

You can either do RTK and then do core. Or do core straightaway. By doing RTK first you frontload your work and can go through core at a quicker pace. In the end, the time to complete Core is roughly the same for both approaches. Try both ways, do what works for you.

Not him but I'm myself a big fan of RTK and yet I wouldn't recommend doing it on the side if you absolutely insist on continue core. My opinion is that RTK should be done before going deep into your vocab studies, in the fastest and most efficient way possible to get the best out of it.

So yeah keep going at it then. If you really wish to learn the radicals you had left then maybe pick up the wanikani deck? It has a subdeck built in with a shitload of radicals, perhaps it'd help. Your choice. The Kanji subdeck in there isn't bad either, it has meanings + readings.

>I don't know what's a meme anymore and what's reality.
That's why you need to learn to be judgemental and forge your own opinions yourself. Learn to recognize when people are giving genuine advice and when they're only being egocentric and subjective about a matter they don't fully comprehend.

Alright, I'll look into it. and I was joking about the meme thing, but I honestly see an equal amount of love and hate for RTK so I don't know.

Wow

I actually found an interesting article

That one was suprisingly interesting, actually.

This. It's pretty normie. I don't even read news about my own country because it makes me sick so it's not like I want to read news about a country I don't even live in.

I'd say find anime otaku websites in Japanese and read that.
>>
>>140989621
Sorry, but I don't agree with you at all. It's one thing to engage in momentary escapism and another to be completely ignorant of what's going on around you.
>>
Tae-kim's explanation for how to order particles is ass.

>With minor particles such as 「から」 or 「まで」, it is difficult to tell which should come first.
>When in doubt, try googling to see the level of popularity of each combination. It turns out that 「からだけ」 is almost twice as popular as 「だけから」.
>>
>>140990566
Nice, your post contributes so much beginner-kun.
>>
>>140990566
It's not like it's something you really have to worry about unless for some reason you're going to try to speak the language before you understand it.

HELP!
I'm thinking of buying the To Love-Ru manga in japanese. Does anyone know if the kanji has hiragana for it(or whatever it is called) in the manga? Kanji is not my strongest yet,

If you use KanjiTomo, there's no real difference in looking things up when there's no furigana.

140 IQ here.

How much time until I master Japanese?
>>
>>140992087
dunno if it low or high
it does not matter
it is 2 years if you try hard 5 years if you are lazy
>>
>>140992087
Learning Japanese is impossible with an IQ of 140.
>>
>>140992087
Linguistic intelligence is the only thing that counts here. Your math shit is irrelevant.
>>
>>140992240
can you define try hard. is 30 words a day in anki trying hard?
>>
>>140971702

What's bad about using Imabi for learning? I was thinking of using it to refresh myself on some things and then move on to some of the more advanced stuff I haven't studied yet.
>>
>>140992087
Too bad if you were just 5 IQ higher you would have been smart enough to learn Japanese just by watching a couple animes.

AS they say in Japan おしい

Is paying for learning a year in Japan for a year worth it?
I went to a convention and there was a women that gave me a flyer, it looks nice and would probably be a nice experience.
I already went to Japan and even know Asakusa where the school is located so yeah I kinda want to do this.

Did anyone here do something like that and was it worth it?
>>
>>140994217
I noticed there are quite a few mistakes in my post, please ignore them.
>>
>>140994217
Not entirely related, but I spent some time in Norway at a host family and am really glad I chose to do it. And although I didn't stay for a year I don't think I would have minded extending my visit.
Just spending a year abroad can be a great experience, if actually learning the language is a central part of it I can imagine it being more than worth it.

I can't tell you whether the program you're looking at specifically is a good offer, but I'd say go for it.
>>
>>140994217
Worth it for what? If you're sociable and try to talk to nipponese outside of class it will certainly be the fastest way to fluency, and probably still the fastest way to fluency even if you just go to class. But, fluency is just about talking. If you just care about reading VNs or manga or something you can be doing that comfortably in a couple years without paying money. You could then go to Japan for 3 months and hit on qts and come back fluent.
>>
>>140993903
It's just difficult to read which is mad for most people.
>>
>>140994217
If it isnt with a shady company you should go for it.
>>
so i am trying to take prep courses before taking 2 years intensive courses overseas in japan

i can take intensive summer courses in my state which are 1.5 hours away, and i might just need to rent a place there for a month during the course

or i can take a course in harvard and relocate there for 7 weeks, its not intensive class but i imagine it would be very thorough foundation for starting my learning japanese

also im not sure about the quality of the in state intensive courses
>>
>>140995093
also when i start looking at the harvard prices, its almost more to take that class than to take an overseas class in japan instead, but most the admissions for overseas in japan have dried up already for this year
>>
>>140995093
Not even being a meme master here, if you have the motivation (and more importantly the discipline) to study Japanese at home you'd get farther by teaching yourself the basics than by attending some prep course in college.
>>
>>140995189
No need to study even. Just watch some anime and listen for common words like "okaeramase" and "itakimasu"
>>
>>140995325
yaa gomen gomen oare no matchey duh
>>
I only have about 65-75% correct in anki core vocab (1 month in) usually, is this fine or should I slow down with new cards and solidify the vocab?
>>
why does core2k/6k show you traffic accident (交通事故) before it shows you just "traffic"? i still haven't encountered traffic yet it slams me with this quadruple kanji word...
>>
>>140995603
Start doing a custom study of forgotten cards every night.
>>
>>140995747
You've already learned 事故. It's usually easier to remember a new word by associating it with a word you already know right away than by giving it to you on its own.
>>
>>140990257
I can understand why you replied this given my comment was a bit extreme.

I do read the news (world news or important one that is) every day and am interested in the world and history. I'm just not interested in pointless politic circuses or news about things completely unrelated to my hobbies.
>>
>>140995747
because it introduced every kanji in it except for 交 already

not saying its a good idea but that's why it pops up then and there
>>
>>140994217
You would probably learn a decent amount of Japanese by being there for a year,. I think going to another country as a beginner is kind of a waste though, so I wouldn't go unless I was at least intermediate.

I know about 1800 kanji and have finished 3 VNs, but I still don't feel like I'd be ready. Since I never do any speaking or writing practice, I will probably never feel ready. I'm a NEET, so its not like I could afford it anyway.
>>
>>140996088
On second thought it's strange they don't give 交通 shortly afterwards. Maybe they just stubbornly added it because in their statistics traffic accident is more common than traffic or something.
>>
>>140995747

You baka. Use a text hooker, copy and paste all the words you don't know into a text file, open it in Firefox or copy it to a pastebin, then use Rikaisama's real-time import function to add the words to your deck.

I want to combine learning with experiencing the country, meeting new people and having fun for example.

I also think talking with Japanese would help me to learn the language faster.
