Why the fuck are you retards making 2 threads? If you guys are going to have your cancer generals on the board, keep it into one fucking thread. I don't care if you guys are having drama over stupid shit, keep it into one fucking thread. There wasn't anything wrong with the previous OP from what I see. The only thing different with it is the image and you can't seriously be telling me that using a different one is your problem?

A translator friend of mine who's been studying for about five years said I should maybe try translating some manga. Been out of practice for a long time so I decided to give it a whirl, and man even though I was dealing with a shonen comedy manga I wanted to tear my hair out. My translator friend got back to me after looking at my work and about for about half of it I almost completely missed the point of the dialog.

Never gonna make it, fellas
>>
>>140914185
Why are you posting that here instead of in the thread that was posted second?
>>
>>140914185
We encountered someone so autistic that they spend over a week straight doing nothing but shitposting in this thread. Trust me we wish this wasn't happening as much as you do.

>>140914964
Sounds like you really shouldn't be translating then to be honest. Don't translate to learn. Translate after learning.

Translating is pretty hard and you want to be able to focus on writing the English, which is hard enough on its own without having to worry about interpreting the Japanese
>>
>>140914964
>Been out of practice for a long time
>Never gonna make it
Well, obviously not if you don't put any work into it.
>>
>>140915079
i agree dont try to translate anything because much like handwriting speaking and production it is a useless endeavor that does not help you learn japanese

if youre doing anything other than flashcards dojg and visual novels youre wasting your time

Please take your passive-aggressive shitposting to the other thread.
>>
>>140915079
>Sounds like you really shouldn't be translating then to be honest. Don't translate to learn. Translate after learning.

This, it's one of the mistakes I made. Translating is it's own separate skill set that takes time to learn, you really can't do it while learning japanese.
>>
>>140915326
How did you miss the point of his post so bad? If you're not fluent enough to translate properly you should improve your skills, otherwise it can even be counterproductive if you completely mess up the translation

These threads are just full of people that want to believe they are in a higher level of learning japanese than they really are. I've been at it for two years and still find shit everyday that makes me feel stupid that I didn't know.

The more time I spend actually using the language the more, I just kinda stay quite and try not to give advice or translate shit while just letting it sink in. It's humbling when you actually try to read non anime shit, and try to pay attention to the news or radio broadcasters talking, or watch commentary on sports events. Once you get away from "onii chan no chinchin daisuki” shit it's eye opening.

Someone said the most common list is not so accurate but I think it works fine. The words are sorted by frequency.

Haven't started yet today, but it has been going okay lately. I have a huge backlog of 1000 words that I haven't seen yet, so I keep trying to mine words and they already exist.

Was supposed to finish Satsukoi tonight, but I might not make it. My goal was to finish by May 1, but I think finishing on May 1 should be fine.

Everyone who learned English (as a seconf language) knows that you don't need to know every word. You can probably read most of it knowing half of these words
>>
>>140920522
So that's why you guys get into arguments so often.
>>
>>140920299
That probably doesn't take into account expressions and combinations of words that have to be learned on their own. So realistically it's probably closer to 30-40 thousand for adequate comprehension of most material.
>>
>>140920686
it's word families instead of individual or compounds

>>
>>140923233
Can you explain those figures a little more?
>>
>>140923233
Great explanation
>>
>>140923260
those are from http://corpus.leeds.ac.uk/frqc/internet-jp.num
far left is ranking, middle is frequency per million words, far right is token
the corpus used for this is extremely biased towards words that would show up in info pages and news, and 法律 機関 ビジネス are all ranked directly next to 開く
in a frequency dictionary of japanese, they're ranked much lower (but still present in the top 5k)
>>
>>140923332
>the corpus used for this is extremely biased towards words that would show up in info pages and news
Okay then. Why is this a bad thing?
>>
>>140923368
because it means that words extremely common in narration or speech but very rare in infopages and news will be pushed away
>>
>>140923332
>extremely biased towards words that would show up in info pages and news
That's the purpose. These words show up often so they have a high frequency
>>
>>140923438
And 柔らかい and 一人暮らし don't deserve to have a high frequency?
>>
>>140923402

How did you come to that conclusion?
>>
>>140923476
I checked.
>>
>>140923473
Why would anything deserve to have a certain frequency? Isn't the purpose of frequency to monitor the number of occurrences, not place value judgements?
>>
>>140923473
If they don't show up so often on the sources which have been used, appearently no. You don't have to use it if you don't like it you know
>>
>>140923524
When you have a biased sample space you're already placing a value judgment towards the domain that you're sampling from.
>>
>>140923520
Are you saying these "extremely common in narration" words are not common in news and informational contexts?
>>
>>140923568
Aren't you arguing this very thing, though? That the corpus ought value common speech over news and info pages? How did you come to the conclusion that your position is superior?
>>
>>140923570
The answer is apparently yes judging by the quality of this frequency list.
>>140923606
>Aren't you arguing this very thing, though?
I'm arguing against biased samples like a totally unmoderated crawl of the internet, which is what this list used.
>That the corpus ought value common speech over news and info pages?
It doesn't. Narration and speech are by far among the smallest of content on the internet.
>How did you come to the conclusion that your position is superior?
How did you come to the conclusion that the position that this frequency list is unbiased is an unusual or strange one to take?
>>
>>140923708
>is unbiased is

>>
>>140923708
>I'm arguing against biased samples like a totally unmoderated crawl of the internet, which is what this list used.
Wouldn't that make it less biased than a controlled sweep?
>Narration and speech are by far among the smallest of content on the internet.
Ergo wouldn't that naturally place higher value on things which are not narration and speech?
>How did you come to the conclusion that the position that this frequency list is unbiased is an unusual or strange one to take?
I didn't make that statement. Could you answer my question?
>>
>>140923708
>>How did you come to the conclusion that the position that this frequency list is unbiased is an unusual or strange one to take?
Not him but
>When you have a biased sample space you're already placing a value judgment towards the domain that you're sampling from.
You are being biased so accusing other people of being biased doesn't make much sense.

It's a frequent list which may be good when you consider reading some of the sources being used. If you plan to read VN, LN or other media you should use another list.
But no one said the list can be used for any kind of media. You just made this assumption and started to argue against this.
>>
tl;dr
>>
>>140923849
>You just made this assumption and started to argue against this.
Exactly. A common strawman arugment because for whatever reason anon doesn't seem to want to admit that he has a biased position based on a value judgement he does not want to directly explain.
>>
>>140923838
>Wouldn't that make it less biased than a controlled sweep?
No, because "the entire internet" is not an unbiased sample of communication. It contains a lot of duplicate informational text and very little casual sidetalk.
>Ergo wouldn't that naturally place higher value on things which are not narration and speech?
No, because "the entire internet" is not the a reasonable target for learning a language. Informational texts are not intelligible until you have a reasonable level of fluency.
>I didn't make that statement. Could you answer my question?
Of course you didn't, so why should I answer your question about something I didn't say?

>>140923849
>You are being biased so accusing other people of being biased doesn't make much sense.
That's not an accusation, that's an answer. Take a look at what that statement was directly responding to.

>Informational texts are not intelligible until you have a reasonable level of fluency.
The same can be said about any text aimed at native adults.

>so why should I answer your question about something I didn't say?
You are clearly insinuating that your position is superior to the "biased" other sample of a wide sweep of the Internet. Explain the reasoning which provided this conclusion.
>>
>>140924071
Someone said, "This is the literal frequency, and I said, "This is a biased frequency". I never said my position wasn't biased away from business/informational material. I only argued that "this" was worse, and gave my reason. You don't have to agree with my reason, but if you're just going to insist that I'm arguing something that I'm not arguing, you don't have a place to stand.

That's not an accusation, that's an answer. Take a look at what that statement was directly responding to.
Answering a question with an answer isn't an answer /a/non. You tend to avoid giving clear answers it seems
>No, because "the entire internet" is not the a reasonable target for learning a language
That's your opinion again. Other people may have a different opinion about this matter

No, he didn't.
That wasn't an answer, it was evasion. He didn't actually address any of the points, instead trying to deflect. Anon made a clear judgement call then tried to insinuate that one was better than the other. Anon is yet to justify the following statement, which underpins his rhetoric:
>No, because "the entire internet" is not the a reasonable target for learning a language
Anon is yet to justify his reasoning for making the claim. I don't know why it is so damn hard to answer a straight forward question.

this might surprise you but people are allowed to have opinons

im pretty sure people are allowed to take postulates man. there's no knowing one way or another whether it's better to target "the entire internet" or not, so there doesn't need to be a reason for having that kind of opinion.

I think the order of the 10K deck is a lot better than that of the 6K one. It's a shame that you have to manually reposition and reschedule the cards from the one from the CoR to get the order right, and there are no instructions with the deck telling you that since the shared deck page for it on the Anki site is gone. The 10K deck from the CoR also doesn't work right with KanjiGrid for some reason (the "order found" order is wrong).

Are you retarded? Anon/you made a fucking judgement call on this very fucking thing and when asked to justify the reasoning, that is: explain the statement instead of just putting it out there and expecting people to accept it, he/you has since avoided answering the question.

It hasn't actually been addressed. Do you think people are blind or something?

I'm seriously thinking of cutting down on Anki. Help me /djt/
I've been studying Japanese for years, I have a vocabulary around maybe 6000-8000. I feel like anki is too dull and words often fail over and over, especially ones with multiple meanings, I push again and again. I already cap it at 500 a day.

I wonder if anki is really the best method for me. I watched that dudes video that learned a bunch of languages and he says he just does what was fun. I'm just worried I won't actually study if I give up anki.
Fuck guys, what do. Anki is becoming harder each day. Has anyone had genuine success with any other methods?

>>
>>140937181
Just stop adding new cards. Within a month you should only spend half an hour max on reviews
>>
>>140937268
I know people have done it faster, I mostly did Anki although I didn't do it every day cause I gave up for like a whole year. I really don't know what's best for me anymore. Right now I'm doing 22 new words a day plus around 10 phrases or idioms but with a cap on the reviews.

Depends on the kanji. If it consists of kanji I've seen before I remember them quite easily, or at least have an easy time coming up with a mnemonic. If it's new kanji it depends on how, well, boring the word is. Some of core's economy related words are a pain in the ass.

I guess 30 new words takes me like 20 minutes since I usually look up each compound on Jisho to learn the kanji themselves as well.

Anyone made a summary for Tae Kim? Like, a sentence or two for each chapter to have a "rule" kind of reminder? I currently make my own summaries in a .txt file but it's a little inconvenient.

As an example, one of the first chapters that introduces particles has this:
は = topic particle
も = inclusive topic particle, "also" - can introduce two topics
が = identifier particle, unidentified topic

So I can just look over it and be refreshed instead of reading through the entire chapter.

Making a deck out of all the vocabulary in LOGH has turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made in the past year or so of studying. Deleting all the words I already know is a pain, but damn the words I don't are really proving themselves to be useful, to the point I'm stunned I didn't see them before now. It's the ultimate compliment to a mining deck, and in fact so many of these words are in my mining deck too that I'm pretty confident in saying one could skip mining altogether and just go through this LOGH deck and emerge fine from it (long term). The only problem with it really is the mistakes inherent to machine-processed vocabulary.
>>140943398
It may be because I go slower than most (20 words a day, up to 40) but I'm at 10k~ words and I don't hate anki at all. I've really grown numb to it. Doing it every day for over two years really just made it a part of life for me. If you want to know what I hate, it's failing to comprehend spoken speech despite easily reading transcripts of the same speech. Anki is nothing compared to that.
>>
>>140943594

Anon, how did you create a LoGH deck from the text rather than mining from reading it?

I didn't know about that tool but it sounds like it probably would work for generating vocab from sub files too, which is something I have wanted to do.

なる is just another "be" verb, and the に that is used to mean "become" with it is adverbial instead of indirect

>Yes, this guy is shit, but 結婚できない is the worst of his problems.

Nah, he admits that he still, after three years, has trouble conversing fluently with native speakers. Don't waste your time watching garbage if you actually want to learn.

>>140946670
Just realized you used nayr's as a source. Just for reference, he made some minor modifications to the original data for the sake of his sentence deck, so a couple words from the original dictionary are swapped out with new ones, and it also pushes the frequency graph around a little. For example, in AFDoJ, 紅葉 is kouyou at 3298, while in nayr's, it's kouyou at 3294 and momiji at 3295. In AFDoJ, 連中 is renchuu at 1796, but it's not even a word field in nayr's deck.
>>
>>140948116
It's beacuse た is telic/perfective, not "past". Just like the simple tense ("nonpast") can be used for past, too, when it's a stream of events, especially in the narrative register.
>>
>>140948199

Yeah, I don't worry about retention so much. I'd rather do a shitload and blaze thru RTK (recognition only, really feel it helps distinguish similar kanji and remember meanings) and Core 2k just to get a lot of exposure to different things. I upped the lapse interval to compensate and I figure this will help me get all the easy cards down quick and then I can struggle with the rest afterwards.

Chiitrans lite might support that. If you don't want to use that, do it with a clipboard capture addon for your browser and rikai.

I used to struggle to do 100 reviews a day, and I would cry a little if it ever got close to 200. However I manned up and boosted new cards for awhile, and now I easily do 400 a day. It's like psychologically developing yourself through stress. If you do something REALLY hard, you get better faster than if you just stuck with easy stuff*. So doing a ton of reps and working hard, will make doing less work seem easy as pie.

*this has no relevance to the massive amount of consumption required for fluency

Thanks.

I don't know how you are a whole lot, so I can't really tell you how you can be more like me.
But that's fine, because you shouldn't aspire to be like me. You should aspire to be how you want to be, to do the things you want to do and to let no person and no fear of yours stand in the way of that.
Of course actions have consequences, and fears that you may have could realize themselves. You should always wager between the action and the consequence, but you should never wager in the favor of irrational shame or irrational fear.

In my opinion, this is something you learn from personal experience. I spent a year trying to act like a normalfag until I realized that there's no definitive kind of "normal" and that I wouldn't ever be happy trying to chase after that (something I wasn't very good at in the first place).

People may think of you in whatever ways and there's no way around that. Either you learn to live with what people think of you, or you live in fear of what they could think of you.

Life is fun anon, don't let non-fun things get in the way of that.

Learning Japanese
Step 1 - Learn enough kanji that you don't have to look any up while reading.
Step 2 - Learn enough grammar that you don't have to look anything up while reading even if sometimes you have to pause and think about it.
Step 3 - Learn enough vocabulary that you don't have to look any up while reading.
Step 4 - Now that you can read interrupted, read a FUCK TON

Takes too long to reach that point. It would be years before you started actually using the language if you were going to wait until you knew all the ~30,000 words you need in order to read uninterrupted.

Also, I doubt you can learn grammar that well without actually putting your knowledge into practice.

Yeah it is, if you learn 3000 kanji there's pretty much no chance of encountering more kanji than you can handle in any modern work. So that's fine.
