How do LN authors manage to consistently make a side-girl more interesting than the main girl in their works? It happens every fucking time. MC should just go for Schwein.

End game stuff is stressful. I remember running Naxx when it was the endgame in WotLC, and there was that one one boss you had to do all that moving around not to die and I would always get killed.

Though I remember, I think I got the one-handed mace that had the highest spellpower in the game and I was an spriest and the guild I was going with was all like, "Sure you can roll for it" but then a bunch of them got all resentful after the fact because they said it was for healers.

It was a pretty cool mace though, it had a cool glowing orb right in the middle when that sort of thing wasn't on every other weapon.

Back when I played world of warcraft I was part of a raiding guild and obviously minmaxed too, but we also had a fair amount of casual people in our guild who didn't minmax their character and usually didn't raid with us. Still, I had some of my most memorable experiences in the game with them. I remember fishing in Orgrimmar with them (we were an alliance guild) more clearly than I remember most raids. Not all people look for the same in a game. It's fine if some of them choose to not minmax. You don't necessarily need to be the best fighter is you treat the game as an exploration game.

That's not true (entirely). Leveling up was fun when the quests were varied and it felt rewarding to get new powers and explore new areas. Like, getting my first epic flyer in BC, it was such a blast just zipping around seeing new things. And when you had a guild of people who didn't bail in the middle of a raid, it was mostly fun to work as a team to achieve goals.

The problem is, unlike other games, once you get to the end, it becomes less fun and more serious, more like a job you do because you have to---that's where the concept of addiction probably isn't misplaced.

For DS and PSO I think being able to go in blind is more of a time thing. Titan EX on FF14 was a good 20-30 minute fight, a single error was a wipe, and you only had 2 hours to complete before the group was forced to disband. whereas in PSO the fights weren't nearly as long, nor as unforgiving.

Maplestory had, for the longest time, a cash shop in which all the cash shop items were untradeable, 99% were just cosmetic items, and the remainin 1% was exp cards too expensive for realistic regular use, and pets that would loot from the ground in your stead, no big deal.

It's also why I enjoy leveling more than anything these days. I don't understand people who rush through it to get to the end game. Having 4 close friends running dungeons with you is more fun than having 39 acquaintances raiding with you. Assuming you have 4 friends to play with.

You could play a paladin tank with a paladin healer and dominate 5 man dungeons. You can laugh as you and your healer stun the same mob and drop lay on hands at the same time, cursing at each other for thinking the same thing at the same time.

Of course there's more content in the vanilla end game, but it's fun doing what a paladin tank is good at when nobody else is thinking about playing a paladin tank, because they'd rather spam flash of light in raids.

I play a shitter of a grind game now and it's not any better than ye olde RO days. Log in everyday to report to your guild and give them the quota tax exp and put loot into the guild stash to advance. You can't solo here, unless you have GM connections or mommy' credit card, get in a guild and make a name for yourself or get kicked out of the server. End game is kinda depressing, your stats steadily drain out until even the newbies overtake your progress because new updates and make it all so easier for fresher vict- er.. players since the developer needs to milk more people dry. Gone are the days in vanilla where you could enjoy open-world exploration, instead you get this min-maxing madness to stay cool and fit in with the constantly evolving pvp scene.

Oh well, at least the mini-games can be amusing and the graphics are top notch 3d

There's no reason you can't play MMOs blind. Most enemies you'll run into during the leveling phase can be dealt with easily even with sub-optimal gear and stats, and almost all modern MMOs have a way to re-spec your character once you reach the level cap. In classic wow repair costs during raids were so high that they would exceed the amount of loot you earned from the raid. You would have to grind on trash mobs just to front the bills.

In addition various potions and elixirs were required which had no real tactics (going to the fire dungeon, better get the fire resist elixer) and were yet another money sink.


This is to say classic mmos had all sorts of problems with flow.

But many of the inconviences it lacked helped it feel like an actual world, you had to travel great distances in order to do just about anything, while modern WOW might as well remove the entire world except for the cities and dungeons that you que into. Quests would take 5 times longer to do with no fairy dust.

With out of combat resource generation being low you had to min-max everything. Playing poorly on trash mobs would mean you would go into the big encounter worst off, because you didn't heal to full out of combat.

"ultimate" cooldowns were less common and came with very long recovery periods, up to an hour. This meant if you fucked up you couldn't just press a button and fix it all the time. In addition mobs were much stronger. Even fighting trash mobs in dead-mines required you to use basic tactics properly in order to complete it, now dead-mines can be done with 2 people.

Tactics and proper composition/building was not so pre-defined. You had to innovate stuff. A paladin might be specced for dps but stop to help cover for the priest who has just ran out of mana, or he may start trying to pull threat off a mage and occupy the tank role. Gear didn't come with every single stat you could ever want on each piece, often you had to pick n choose.

All of these came with a ton of inconveniences and balance issues. Modern MMos are streamlined, everythign that gave it depth is removed inexchange for constant, predictable progress with no confusing "choice" and it's essentially a Mobage in a 3d setting

I played, and still play sometimes, Tibia. It was created in 1997 and the amount of change it's when through since release makes the current game totally different from what it was. It all went downhill when they removed the GMs. Plus BRs, fuck BRs and polacks.
