And the funny thing is being accurate is not the same as being "realistic", in that most people's view of realism was false to begin with. When someone said they want something realistic, they usually meant they want a fantasy that match what they personally believe to be real.

The military tactics used in LotGH weren't that fascinating to be honest. It was mostly the named commanders being competent and everyone else (especially on the side that was supposed to lose the battle) filled with braindead angry Pepes. I remember when I was watching it recently, specifically in the episode where Yang almost killed Reinhard, there was some no name commander who wanted to retreat and Reinhard told him to go out there again and die for him, so he just charged into the blocade of Alliance troops like a total moron and as his spacecraft was destroyed, they gave him one more scene as he was being obliterated into light, literally screaming a very "REEE"- like sound.

If they did that, they'd be on the high seas instead and we'd see massive armadas of ships blowing each other to pieces with cannon fire. Though that'd be more unique in that I'm pretty sure western naval renaissance is an underused setting in anime.
