あとは、残りの1年を引き継いでくれる人を見つけるか。。。(Transferが可能な契約内容なら、という条件付きですが)

Not really, that hasn't been a "rule" ever since Sakura autist became a thing and "first threads" got deleted several times in favor of the proper one. Pretty sure this is going to happen every time a thread is made with the shitty Sakura OP. Pretty much any other character an image would be fine, but that image/character will never become accepted no matter how hard you try to force it.

>>
>>140746267
Satsukoi. It is pretty good but too many sex scenes. Getting towards the end so I am trying to decide what I am going to read next.
>>
>>140746524
Have you read multiple routes? How many H scenes on average per route? I was under the impression it had a pretty average amount. I was considering reading that soon but I have other stuff lined up too.
>>
>>140746635
Not him, and it has a perfectly reasonable amount of sex scenes, that guy just has shit taste.
>>
>>140746501
>just so they know why we are reporting the other thread
Because you're autistic as fuck and can't handle variation.
The other thread was up first, that's all that fucking matters you cancerous piece of shit.
>>
>>140746635
3 for each route. Flyable Heart had about 2 per route, so I guess it really isn't that much more now that I compare them. Satsukoi has a more interesting plot than FH though, so the sex scenes feel like they are getting in the way of plot progression.

I do have to admit, the Satsukoi scenes are better than Flyable Heart.
>>
>>140746167
>Not really, that hasn't been a "rule" ever since Sakura autist became a thing and "first threads"
You're wrong, newfag.
It's been a rule for years now. It was established after the mods originally gave up deleting the threads because they didn't belong here, and decided to allow it as long as there was only one thread up at a time. First come, first serve.

>>140745962
I didn't make that thread you goddamn autist.
>>
>>140746811
>Because you're autistic as fuck and can't handle variation.
>The other thread was up first, that's all that fucking matters you cancerous piece of shit.
Not really. That image is pretty much a troll image at this point. I don't think anyone objects to variation / anime OPs in general when you can easily search for it or have "DJT" visible in the OP image text, it's that specific image and character people are taking such issues with. Literally just let Sakura go and make an OP with any other character, because Sakura isn't something DJT is going to get over any time soon.
>>

>>
>>140746855
You seem to have left out a rather important bit while quoting me to make it look like I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm perfectly aware of what they said. They have deleted the first created threads several times when a more legitimate OP was made afterwards. At this point the Sakura image is pretty much shitposting. Use literally any other image.
>>
>>140746957
90 is pretty generous dont you think
>>
>>140746837
Yeah 3 is a really average amount of H scenes. Seikishi had 8~ per route and HoshiOri has 10+ per route.
>>
The only objective method of deciding the thread is time so that nobody activates their autism about the OP image.

Would those games be considered nukige with that many scenes?

I don't mind a few scenes. but I mostly want to read VNs for the plot. I don't plan on ever reading a nukige.
>>
>>140746267
Been kind of busy so haven't had as much time to read as usual, but I've been reading the Mayuri Flyable Heart "fandisc" VN slowly on the side. I posted my thoughts about it here when I started it
http://desustorage.org/a/thread/140262117/#140306544

Pretty much all of those thoughts have held pretty firmly so far (just finished the 2nd H scene, not sure how far in that is though), so I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a beginner and I definitely wouldn't recommend it to someone who hasn't read all of Flyable Heart's routes.

>>140747257
If its not that big of a deal then why not just use a different image instead of trying to force the one almost everyone hates? I mean, I agree that it's kind of dumb, but as long as it's that image, the autism isn't going to settle down and you know that.

Anyways, if you're gonna keep discussing this, at least go into the other thread to do it.

the meta discussion is more annoying, plus the VN thread on JP fucking hates DJT and any discussion of difficulty or stuff like "I prefer low H scenes because I'm reading to learn and it's distracting" etc.

if you wanna discuss something about the language then start a discussion, don't just make yet another meta post.

>(just finished the 2nd H scene, not sure how far in that is though)
You're getting close to the really good part. I'm almost envious, since I can never read that part for the first time again. It's actually glorious.
>>
>>140748389
I was surprised how tastefully done the 2nd H scene's art was. There weren't even nipples in it.

Good to hear that I'm coming up to a really good part though, I'm already immensely enjoying it since Mayuri's route was the one I was looking forward to the most in Flyable Heart and I feel like I'm getting everything I wanted out of that route so far and then some (since it seems to have pretty much no padding at all compared to Flyable Heart and a better writing style).

Looking forward to continuing tomorrow.
>>
>>140748485
Oh really? I felt the first half of Mayuri's VN - basically, the part you've read so far - was good, but nothing special. A bit repetitive since I already know most of what's going to happen.

It's the 2nd half that makes the game one of the best things ever written.
>>
>>140748554
Yeah, I didn't really mind it because there were interesting changes throughout, went more in depth on some things, skipped pretty much all of the padding in Flyable Heart's common route, showed a lot more of Mayuri's thoughts and history and stuff that you may know about through her route but never actually got to see / hear more in depth about outside of a few glimpses here and there. If this is nothing special I'm really looking forward to the second half.

I'm also pretty glad that I didn't read this directly after Flyable Heart as I'm pretty sure I would've ruined it and had trouble understanding a lot of it.
>>
>>140748656
You guys are getting me hyped, but I probably won't read it for another 1-2 years.
>>
>>140748732
Just read faster dude, you were finishing Flyable Heart routes in a few days / a week towards the end. You don't wanna take a decade to get to reading simple plotge, do you?
>>
あと一日か
>>
>>140748798
Even if I read faster, I am going to read 1-2 more VNs before I read the FH fandisc, then probably 1-3 more before I read the Mayuri one. And probably at least one LN mixed in somewhere. So it will take some time.
>>
>>140748858
Based on what I've seen/heard, you'll want to read the Mayuri VN before the fandisc anyways since the fandisc has some characters that are exclusive to her VN and probably reference it and the fandisc was released after the Mayuri VN.
>>
「クソ」エロゲを食べました
>>
>>140748893
I never looked at the release dates, so I never even considered that. That really ruins my plans.

So I guess my new plan is read 4-5 VNs, then Mayuri, then Candyheart.

I know man, it doesn't even tell you how to use Rosetta Stone to maximise your learning potential. I'm planning on moving to Japan in a decade, and my current studying schedule will make me as capable as an elementary schooler in just 7 years. All the talk of kanji is just silly, as we all know there are more kanji than stars in the universe, and it's a lifelong struggle to learn them.

I heard that emperor Hirohito is going to ban the use of kanji any day now anyway, so there's really not much point learning them.

(NOTE: Ignore if you do not like boring rants)

So, today marks the exact 2 year anniversary of when I started learning Japanese (April 27th 2014), or to be specific the end of a several year period of fucking around in the first chapters of Genki 1 and the beginning of Core2k in anki. Pic related. (ignore the 23 days, I dropped core after the first day and restarted). To commemorate this event, I'll detail what level I'm at now, what I did over those years, and what I regret.

To get it out of the way - I'm not perfect. I can't answer every question posted here, I make dumb mistakes sometimes, and I can't fluently speak. Some people could by now, but I can't. What I can do however is pick up a novel or anime or manga and read/watch it beginning to end and have a good time. If you challenge me with snippets, I'll probably fuck some up - however, when watching and reading native material, I can picking up the majority, even the vast majority, but not all and not without mistakes. So in that sense, my precedent can be both one of relief and fear - you can study daily for 2 years and be pretty good, but you still also will have a lot left to learn. The easiest way to understand my level is that Japanese is not a barrier to reading 99% of content, and doesn't cross my mind when I pick something to read, but my level still impacts how I interact with the text (LoGH - with great fear). Also, that I can go to scanlation threads and notice a fuckton of errors.

As for what I did, the answer is 493 hours in anki with 8000~ mature cards and 2000~ young and the equivalent 30 complete visual novels of average length, plus a significant smattering of reading 2ch posts, some manga, interviews, watching lets plays, and other minute tasks. I didn't do RTK (more on that later), I just picked up kanji from Core2k, my mining deck, and reading. I did literally nothing else - no writing, no speaking practice, no significant listening practice outside of VN voice acting.
>>
>>140754945
I regret some of that. I wish I had done RTK, probably, because I still fuck up some simple kanji distinguishing. Like I just realized the 類 in 類稀 is the same as 類(るい). This doesn't impact my reading abilities but it does suck when learning new words. I regret not doing more real listening practice, because there's a lot of words I know from kanji but forgot the reading of long ago despite how common/signifcant they are. And finally, I regret not realizing that closing my web browser would allow me to focus infintiely better. My quality of life, studying, and reading shot up when I closed my browser when studying and removed the immediate temptation of opening tabs and getting lost in the internet.

In short, I have studied for 2 years and am halfway to the 4 year deadline, things are looking good. My reason for posting this, aside from commemoration, is mainly that I remember thinking that when I started everyone would already be fluent when I got there, but it seems like there's still a lot of people just starting. So maybe the experiences, successes, and failures of someone with 730 days experience will be of interest.

So at what point is it okay to try your hand at translating various types of media? I'd assume that manga would be easier than LNs or VNs, given the lack of narration most of the time.

If you're a beginner is it okay to try it, or wait till lower intermediate / upper intermediate? Could a certain VN / LN / proper novel serve as a sort of benchmark? Time invested? JLPT level? Any sort of rough guideline / goal to work toward would be good, or if someone else has experience in doing translations.

Also I am assuming that this includes the translator being a native English speaker who has read a bunch in English already.

I came into this thread with the intention of one day translating shit, but not sure when is a good point to start, or if I should start out editing etc. instead of just translating.
>>
>>140757027

>>

>>
>>140757322
Mouse over with rikai, and all the secrets will be revealed.
>>
>>140757299
You can do whatever the fuck you want. You don't need some internet nerd's approval to translate shit. Besides, the EOPs will never even notice your errors.
>>
>>140757299
When I first started I thought "I will never translate anything until I read an entire book".
However, the truth is much more sinister.
If you don't mind making bad translations, then you can start whenever. People eat shit constantly because of people making this choice so they're used to it.
If you want to make GOOD translations, then this is the benchmark you should use: HOW OFTEN DO YOU DOUBT YOURSELF? HOW OFTEN DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU READ? In short, if you're constantly re-reading parts because you don't understand, if you constantly have to look up words because your vocabulary is weak... then you shouldn't translate and expect to make good translations. It just won't happen.

The only thing stopping you from making bad translations is your own morals. So think about it.
>>
>>140757299
Start any time you want. Use a dictionary or guide if you get stuck. Knowledge reqs vary depending on what youre translating
>>
>>140757361
Maybe I should have specified: I don't want to resort to "machine translation" like text or just shitting out whatever to fill in the gaps in knowledge (while banking on nobody noticing the bullshit).

So producing so called "good" translations.
>>
>>140757442
The simple truth is thus: If you want to translate Japanese well, you have to know Japanese. Therefore, ask yourself: do you know Japanese, right now? If you're struggling to read texts, still encounter significant unknown vocabulary, and most importantly can't read a novel cover to cover with little trouble and a steady pace then you don't know Japanese.
>>
>>140757442
Then whenever you can read/listen to stuff and know what it means and can say it in English.
I would recommend youd be fluent but many things can be translated being a beginner or intermediate. Keep in mind people have different meanings for beginner, intermediate, etc

A lot depends on the material being translated.
絵本 usually only have hiragana
Manga has a bigger rane of stuff you need to know. Very few require JLTP N1 and N2
If youre translating newspapers or scientific articles you will need N1 or beyond
This is obviously a simplified answer. Theres more you need to know than things you see in jltp to translate many things even if theyre low level stuff
>>
what should i read
>>
>>140757442
Professional translators use programs to help them translate faster. What you really need to know is that there are two main requirements to translating Japanese into English:
1. know Japanese very well.
2. know English very well.

If you want some sort of standard, I'd say for a generalised requirement, you should be able or have at least passed N1 in the 日本語能力試験 with a high passing mark. This shows you have a solid general comprehension of written and spoken Japanese. There are also other examples of certified exams and translation assessments for translator organisations.

If you're interested in fan translation, do that whenever the fuck you want. The EOPs aren't likely to notice or care and it might give you some sort of practice if you really want to start translating early.

It's a travesty really, to witness all the scanlation threads on /a/ and all the shit pumped onto to mangareader or whatever. Nobody really understands just how bad the translations are. My tomorrow I'll have reviewed all of the cards in the Basic volume of the DoJG from the DoJG deck. After being away from the language for so long, it's all coming back and feels pretty good. The causative-passive construct is something that sounds strangely nice rolling off the tongue. させられる. 話させられる、食べさせられる. It's like a stream of syllables.
>>
I don't understand why in sentences like:

>彼女は背が高い

It's が, and not は twice. Going by Tae Kim's explanation, it would read "as for her, stature is the thing that is tall", where as I'd expect it to read "as for her, as for her stature, is tall".

Is there an explanation for this, or is this particular structure just the way it is?

Honestly I think you shouldn't translate until you can comfortably read whatever material it is without questions. Being able to look words up isn't enough -- too often words are used in specific ways or mean certain things which you wouldn't pick up on if you're just relying on the dictionary definition. That's exactly what happened in that example, they probably just looked up モノ and saw that it meant "thing, object" and you end up with a weird translation. If you can't read it comfortably without only very minor or no questions remaining, you shouldn't be translating it.

That said EOPs will take anything and don't know a good translation from a bad one so long as the text sufficiently matches the pictures, so you could go ahead and produce bad ones and it won't matter all that much.
>>
>>140757958
It's not enough to know every word, you need to understand culture and historical allusions as well. Although again, not that EOPs will notice.

"If an evil comrade is abandoned, I thought we could have a good battle"? I guess this thing is more obvious in context, but I don't get it.

Or is it meant to be "she thought that we'd have a fair fight just because she abandoned her comrade" or something?

when you want to say something like "but what about (person)", do you use は or が?"彼女は?" sounds like the correct one to me, but isn't が supposed to be the one that shows contrast? Also maybe because it's also a question it feels like "は?" it feels like it would be the same thing as "this is the girl?" and "what about the girl?"

Is it better to go through a premade 2k kanji deck, or make one yourself with the kanji you encounter in the core vocab? I've been doing the former but I'm starting to think the latter might be better...
>>
>>140764150
が simply doesn't sound right if what you mean is "what about her?" I guess it's more than this, but xは is like "about x, ..." and xが is used to say that x is the grammatical subject of the verb or possesses whatever attribute/object you're about to talk about. So when asking "what about x?" が doesn't seem to have the right meaning.

You could use が for clarity but mainly if you were trying to clarify the subject of a construction. Like:
>パンを食べた。 Ate bread.
>彼女が? She ate the bread? (did the verb)
>いいえ、私が食べた。 No, I ate it. (I did the verb)
Or you could use it for emphasis if you were trying to take credit for having done something:
>俺がやった。 I'm specifically the one who did the verb of doing it.

That said I'm not an expert so this might be a bit off. Basically there are rules about when to use が or は, but you're really better off getting a feel for them through reading and seeing how natives choose between them in different situations.
>>
>>140764464

Yes, but not in a spreadsheet. I use forest app in 30 minute chunks, and after the half hour is up, I note down what I accomplished during that time.

It's nice to go back and see a visual representation of how much studying you did in a given day. The app displays 1 tree for each successful session, so busy days become forests + you can look at what you noted down in detail.

>>

There isn't a need to do a specific number of reps each day. Mindlessly droning away at words isn't going to teach you the language, seeing them applied again and again in text is what gets you to remember them. The more you read the more you will remember. And if you don't do your 100/200/300/whatever words today nothing terrible will happen.

>>140771615
Well I immediately decided to do reps and I'm making pretty good headway in between posts.
>>
>>140771635
Sounds like fun.
>>
>>140771498
The point is, with time reps will become less and less important. If you've been studying for some time and have a decent grasp on grammar and at least enough words to understand a casual conversation that means its time to expose yourself to practice far more than to drone away at rep words. In reading old words will be reinforced and you will quickly understand new ones based on context thus imprinting them far better in your mind.
>>
>>140771660
You would be incorrect, it's not.
>>140771662
I've been studying for a couple years, anki is still a boon. Some words (two recently examples of words I studied in anki and only recognized because of it: 意を酌む, 付け込む) simply don't appear often enough (yet still often enough) such that studying them in anki is still a significant help. I can tell its helping so I do it. Reading is more important but reps are still pretty helpful so I do both.
>>
>>140771761
I'm not saying that reps are not important, but if you have a choice between reading and reps definitely go for the reading. Heck, read first and then rep you'l sometimes find that the words will come even easier when you practice anki.
>>
>>140771852
There's always a choice between "reading" and "anki" and as long as I have reps do I don't understand why I wouldn't pick anki considering that if I skip reviews I'll just have do them tomorrow.

RTK is fun but I'm only 40 characters in.
Tae Kim is difficult because I keep having to go back and forth between the vocabulary and the examples to make sense of what I'm reading.

Funny that I have neither of those in anki and know the meaning of them easily. Especially 付け込む like really that's basic shit since 付ける is a common word and 込む a common "suffix" verb
>>
>>140772365
I'm bad at guessing words, sue me. Particularly 付け込む, I really don't get how you'd guess that means "to take advantage of" without knowing what it means beforehand.
>>
>>140772449
I mean you wouldn't be able to guess without context but wit context it should be doable at least if you've seen it once or twice before.

I find the words that really need to go in anki are the ones with weird readings.
>>
>>140772527
That's a different story, you can guess words that are censored with context. Context is all powerful. What he's implying is clearly that since he knows those two common words he could derive what 付け込む meant. However, even though I know those two common words I couldn't figure the word out from those two.

I find that studying a word in anki before seeing it in context helps me read a lot more smoothly. Less guessing, less problems.
>>
Whats a better idea as far as custom vocab decks go?

To make just a word/ meaning card, or to also include a card for example sentences utilizing the card? Anyone has their own methods to go about this?
>>
>>140772660
Word / meaning is pretty solid any way you look at it. Example sentences will slow you down too much to be valuable in my opinion, ESPECIALLY if you're going through 30+ new words a day.
>>
>>140772365
>common "suffix" verb
This kills the grammar
>>
>>140772611
The goal is to understand Japanese right? If you can figure out what a word means in context reliably, then you're good. You might not be able to use it well in production, but that means that either:
1) The word is uncommon enough that you don't need to use it in production
or
2) Insufficient input
>>
>>140772762
>I find that studying a word in anki before seeing it in context helps me read a lot more smoothly. Less guessing, less problems.
I included this line specifically because I expected you would say something like that, but then you went ahead and did it anyway.
>>
>>140772807
I mean sure if you want to be an anki addict that's up to you. but honestly you probably just don't read enough
>>
>>140772878
I read more than I do anki by a significant margin. I don't really consider it being an "anki addict" when it is very noticeably helping me read more difficult texts more smoothly. Dropping 20-some minutes of flashcards a day would just make my life harder for no significant gain.

back:
これは例文です。
これはれいぶんです。

This might be a stupid question, but I'm still less than a month into Anki. In anime it seems like it's a trope where people introduce themselves and then talk about which Kanji to use to spell their name and the meaning of an unorthodox Kanji they might have in lieu of a more commonplace one. When do you get to a point in which you understand that? Are names all made up of Kanji used in regular speech, or are there seperate Kanji used only for names? Do learning radicals help with this?

From what I've seen it looks like most of them are just regular kanji you'd see in other words, but they have different common readings for names.

Don't take my word for this, but I would also imagine that there's probably some very uncommon kanji in normal vocab words that are more or less only ever seen used in names. But that's just a guess.

和気あいあい is actually really common to write like that. More common than with the kanji. Might as well have complained about something using その instead of 其の.

You're right that it does kind of go both ways though depending on the word.
>>
>>140776784
I don't get your point... obviously some words are easier to read in kana. That's the same for foreigners and Japanese people. It's just the implied conclusion your post had, that learning foreigners would have superior kanji to natives.
>>
>>140776717
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/653061995

Someday I'm going to do this one. I wish I found it before I finished the decks I started with, because this one looks much better.
>>
>>140776847
It's not that foreigners have superior kanji, it's that if you don't know the word then it's much harder to look up if it's half kanji, because dictionaries don't pick it up as easily that way, and you might try to just look up 和気 or something like that.
>>
>>140776847
That wasn't me though. I was lurking and the discussion reminded me of that pic so I posted it. The only point I was trying to make with it is that accessibility of the text is an important point in works aimed at natives too.
