I actually find this more interesting than simply killing her off. I read this to see the characters struggle, and while killing off Kurumi would have plenty of potential for the others, you can something somewhat close while having Kurumi struggle with her own nature and the fact she pretty much killed that guy now.
I do hope she (or someone else but she remains the best candidate) dies at some point, but for now dragging it on as is looks to me like the better choice.
That said, I agree that the manga plays it a little too safe, which is perhaps the reason I found this chapter's developments surprising. She basically lured the guy outside. Sure, he could have quit the pursuit at any point, but she could also have lost him easily.

I guess? But at the same time dead is dead and kind of by definition he's hardly alone in going that way, and it's not *that* drawn out. It's awful but in much the same way that dying in a fire or drowning is awful in terms of not being instant. Many deaths in actual IRL accidents and the like are actually somewhat drawn out, or even worse and more. Hell, I'd pick zombies and having it all over in <60 seconds vs all those earthquake victims buried alive and dying in the dark over a period of days.

It's an unfortunate situation that HE CREATED though. Frankly I have really, really minimal respect for a person who does something like that in such a situation. They're facing a massive death threat and frankly it doesn't look like there is much of humanity left, period. They're also in a pretty good place relatively speaking: a decently stocked, well maintained and defensible living area with numerous facilities, the ability to sally forth for additional preserved supplies, etc. Anything that actively jeopardizes that is just Too Dumb To Live.

And even then, at least some forethought makes sense. Even if they did decide force was unavoidable, it'd make sense to go as a group, equipped as best they could, and with planning and contingency planning done upfront. I mean fuck, I do that when I go fucking HIKING for anything serious (any trip that lasts multiple days at >10k feet, like in the Rockies, or where there is any significant other risk factors to the terrain). This is basic common sense stuff. "First do no harm" and all that.

Hurr. Really, the worst part of a slow, dumb zombie outbreak like this is the initial bit, and then staying slow, steady and careful in terms of supply management and collection. Once you've actually got a zombie free defensible nice living area, and plenty of canned goods in easy range, then survival for a good decade isn't particularly hard. Longer if you can start growing stuff too.

Unless the zombies are magic that should be enough time for them to rot and stop working, and without any new supply of fresh humans to convert they'll vanish on their own. Just have to be careful of anything lingering if you're connected to an area with permanently freezing temperatures, but Japan doesn't have that problem.

Frankly the REAL threat pretty quickly isn't zombies but other humans, same as always.

The story isn't "random" by definition, it's about a tiny, tiny fraction of a percent. Because otherwise they'd be more zombies already. Most people didn't make it period. Of the ones that did, most didn't have access to any serum, or even know about it (including the girls until they had reason to check). And if they DID have serum, most would (correctly) use it instantly upon being bit rather then waiting until the last second (which the girls only did because of necessity). Just because it's unlikely doesn't make it unrealistic or "random", stories in general are told about unlikely events because most of us aren't interested in stories about the stuff that we literally do ourselves every day. All of us on /a/ could go an buy a lottery ticket today and not win the lotto, but that doesn't make it unrealistic that SOMEONE won the lotto, and that they'll they might then do something with it that a story could be told about.

The rest of these so called elites will get what's coming to them soon enough, but I do hope the rest of the university doesn't get breached by zombaids. Because that'll mean more people will likely die, and that their newfound safe spot is going to be lost to zombies again.

Lots of places are safe in a zombieworld of this type. Maximum safety is actually pretty simple: a boat. Zombies like these are no threat in the water (would actually get eaten/fall apart post-haste anyway if they even entered for long), and even in ancient days people had no trouble last for YEARS out on the water in relatively small (by current standards) sailing boats. Why did the anime art look so off model?

I can't help but feel some anons think this is some kind of Hollywood horror film, and that means there is a formula of decreasing the main cast one by one through the story.

This isn't what this manga is about. The author has a story to tell, and the main cast is what he used to tell it. This isn't going to slowly cut down on the main cast, that harms the plot. Until they reach Randal the cast will survive. Even Shovel's superpowers is just a way to justify a little girl's capacity to fight against full size adults.

How does that seem "very likely?" We've seen literally no examples of immune carriers in the series thus far.

She's fucked. She's turning into a zombie but it's crueler than that. She's going to need another shot of the serum to slow down the process. But like any drug, the more she'll use it, the shorter the time span.
It'll get to the point where she'll need a shot every hour, her whole body will shake and she won't even be able to hold her shovel.
Her memories will slowly vanish and by the time the shots won't be enough, she likely won't even remember her friends or who they are.
She will, quite literally, be a walking corpse.

The other theory would have the bf getting bit somewhere offscreen even tho the other characters say he never went outside/no zombies were around. The std would let the author show the reader the whole path of infection, set up a reveal for an immune carrier, and make for the greatest tragedy as melee crew goes revenge crazy

The initial outbreak itself was semi massive and probably spread through an unknown vector( probably the water given the emphasis on it being an evil river in side materials).
Next step was everyone being surprised
Then all of the idiots or people in a bad place to hide died and/or got people extra people killed with their stupid.
Thanks to all of that the population is large enough to be considered a threat if you're noticed outside of or without a safe area.

The people that survived all that are generally "safe" as long as something stupid/unexpected doesn't happen as they usually know not to let themselves be in any real danger.

People don't know what's going on. They need to rest, and when they do, they wake up surrounded. People crack from the stress. Either someone in the shelter commits suicide and goes zombie, or someone hid that they had been bitten, or someone opens the door to try and run, and then they have zombies in the shelter.

Part of the zombie genre is the fantasy of being the guy who does the obvious stuff when everybody else is fucking up and being stupid. Part of the appeal of zombies is that they're beatable by ordinary people.

I really enjoyed the early part of it, with the hallucinating loser protagonist, and even the part where he was a struggling manga artist. Some of the stuff with the hallucinating infected girl was fun, too.

I think it could have been great if the author stuck to keeping the reality of the situation uncertain, and made the reveal of whether there were really zombies or not the end of the story, with at most a short epilogue to resolve the situation, like 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Personally, I think the best resolution would have been that there was an epidemic caused by a bioweapon based on rabies, so there were infected people running around in delirious states and sometimes trying to bite people, but they were still just sick people with physiological needs and weaknesses, and Hideo was hallucinating the rest because of his mental illness (while the girl also started hallucinating because she was infected, though it was a less severe case). No more than 8 volumes.
