I still to this day believe that the original plot of the 3 Kings arc was going to be an all-out war in Demon World filled with betrayal and death galore, but it ended up getting tied up by another tournament because marketability.

Tournament arc are fine when its early into a manga. You see main characters progress, setup future villains and show the extent of the universe's rules and ways abilities interact.

Tournament arcs near the end of a manga are pointless.
