The funny thing is that it has a ton of the same elements people on /a/ shit on SnK for. Sometimes in the same fucking sentence as praising this new one.

When I saw the trailer for SnK, it was probably the most hyped I'd been for anything. I was expecting great things based on the animation shown in the trailer. By the time it got to the Trost arc, it felt like a chore to watch it.

It doesn't matter what elements they share. Kabaneri is SnK only using the elements right. They animation is more consistent now that WIT has got their act together. The pacing is leagues better; it doesn't timeskip from them being kids to them in training to them going on their first mission in the span of three episodes. The drama feels more realistic other than them shouting at the sky about the unfairness of life and the need to continue fighting.

Same here and its not just because of the fetish thing. Like you said the Damsel is more easily ignored while the Mary Sue tends to get more attention from the other characters. Eventually you start to get a disconnect between the way the characters see her and they way you feel about her and that makes her even more annoying.

A damsel in distress is annoying because its overplayed and depending on the damsel herself could be incredibly annoying to watch if she is the ''woe is me'' type, however plot wise its very easy to empathize with and doesn't spoil the plot in any real way. While marry sue's are annoying because they are basically walking plot armor with tits, it doesn't matter what happens in the story, a marry sue (or garry sue in most shonen) are basically infallible and completely flatten tension from the plot because you know that because of who they are then none of their struggles or agonizing matters because they will always persevere in the end.

They completely remove tension from the plot, effectively killing any sense of anticipation or buildup within a story. If you as a viewer however are a-ok with this but just want to see how they will go about it then that's totally fine.

But from an objective standpoint a damsel in distress is much less harmful to a plot than a marry sue.
