I use rechargeable batteries, so it is pretty economical. Good NiMH also last a long time since the AA size batteries are up to at least 2500 mAH which is more than many cheap alkalines have. I also carry spare rechargeable batteries in the laptop bag in case the ones in the mouse run down. These spares are in a plastic battery container to prevent accidental shorting out if I do something stupid like toss a handful of steel paperclips into the same compartment as the batteries (not that I would do something like that).
