The sequence was good in how it showed anger and rage, but it was unbefitting of Shinji, whose cowardly and childish personality should've displayed his anger and rage in a different manner, such as a child in a giant robot stomping on an underground pyramid.
Shinji is not GAR or hotblooded at all, so writing him as such was a questionable choice.
