One thing about full sized Zentradi and why we don't see them much is that full sized Zentradi eats a lot because of their size. SDF-1 had a fuck ton of low-budget stuff in it, most anime was like that back in the day, with missing frames and tons of stock footage and animation errors, people just tend to forget that due to nostalgia goggles. Gundam 0079, Space Battle Ship Yamato, and Harlock often had the exact same issues, though I think Macross and Gundam were probably the worst when it came to animation out of the classics.
