I am going to Japan in 3 weeks, here's my study plan. I want to master basic conversational Japanese to enjoy the people and culture without any problems.
1 week - kana (hirgana and katakana), kanji.
2 week - grammar (Genki I)
3 week - listening (anime) and speaking (skype)
4 week - Japan!
>>
why do you take the adverbial form of nouns with なる to "become" that noun? does it work the same way with ni-adverbs that act as adverbs instead?
>>
>>140437026
>master basic conversational Japanese
>in 3 weeks
Do you have 50 hours per day to learn Japanese?
>>
>>140437104
I have about 15-18. Do you mean per week cause there's only 24 hours in a day.

Even assuming you have no other commitments whatsoever, that's going to require a lot of dedication. Good luck though.

So I'm down with the whole "learn words that matter to you" but to what extent should I take it?

For example, in the book I'm reading, the word "Gemini" came up. Didn't know it, learned it, etc. Now I feel like I should learn the related words too i.e. the rest of the Zodiac signs. They most likely will not show up for the rest of the book but just like in English we know the Zodiac signs but don't use them everyday, I think I should learn them in Japanese since I already encountered one.
>>
>>140442674
what does your question even mean

do the shit you want to do and take the things that come as they may. if youre interested in a topic that you find and want to explore that take it as it comes

nihongo is very much life itself in that you will never be prepared for what might come your way
>>
>>140442674
The feeling I'm getting, from having read 50 books, is that there's a lot of words not worth learning in anki, because at some point you've got to treat vocabulary expansion like a native would, you know? Which is to say, look'm up as you see'm but don't especially attempt to memorize them. I've read thousands of English books in my life, but I still see unknown words. When I do, my interaction with them ends at the dictionary. I don't add'm to anki in hopes that one thousand books from now I see it again and don't have to look it up. Likewise, at some point in Japanese, you've got to learn to ease off anki and just look up words as they come. You'll know when it's best to do that - when looking up words isn't common enough to be tedious or unpleasant.

This is just tangentially related to your question but I hope it helped a little. If you have an interest in a group of word there's no harm in learning them specifically through anki, it just can eat up time that would better be spent learning other words, or doing pretty much anything other than flash cards.

Don't really understand that comment either. Maybe there is an underlying precedent that the person has no experience studying kanji and somehow only managed to learn words as chunks of shapes and associate them that way. My eyes started getting blurry after about an hour of reading and I had to take a break. I might have to move the monitor closer to me while reading. I think I did that while reading Flyable Heart.

I think I am getting into the start of intermediate hell. It feels so good when I manage to go several lines without having to look anything up, but then I run into an unknown word and having to mouse over it completely ruins the flow. Reminder that if you're at the point where you can read relatively simple stuff like a moege and don't have to look up/mine words every few sentences, you should try re-watching a SoL-setting / simple anime without subs to help build up your listening comprehension. I've been doing it while doing my reps and its helping my listening comprehension quite a bit while only slowing my reps down a relatively small amount. Context and memory from watching it before is usually enough to figure stuff out even if your vocab level is still relatively low. When you're completely lost in a conversation just rewind conversations and re-listen or check the subs for the missing vocab and then turn them back off.

How screwed am i, i completed the first unit in my japanese course last year and tomorrow my next unit starts and i didn't study between that time so about 6 months, the first unit was spread over a whole semester but this semesters' one is crammed into half that time, whats the chance that im fucked and everyone practiced and has remembered everything?

yeah but with these continual courses you need to remember the basics to be able to understand the later courses so even if im studying in class i might not understand some of what the teacher is saying.

Yeah you are probably right about most people not remembering everything and to be honest i think the first couple lessons are labelled as revision lessons of the first units content.

I have a kanji dictionary, that lists the old Jouyou kanji, the 1945~ish most common kanji, it's great cause it explains their meanings and goes into detail, gives examples, pretty useful

We're yurotrash, english isn't our native langugae, shit can get lost if you translate through 3 languages.

But you just wanted to post your smuganimegirl.jpg didnt you
>>
>>140470799
Frankly also euros should aspire to acquire in proficiency even beyond their own language. For learning Japanese, cutting out your native language entirely is an entirely profitable enterprise.
>>
>>140470430
I don't think they have Genki available over here, but I'll really look around before buying something.

Anime is a given, heh.

>>140470452
Alright, thanks.

I'll keep that in mind.

I'm considering buying a book because I have some money that I can waste.

You can even get rid of Genki in favor of anime if you think your listening skills are up to speed.

The japanese verb 遊ぶ is mostly the same as the english verb, play. In my native language, the closest to that is játszik which can mean literally playing a game, a role, or an instrument, but játszik cannot be used as widely as play or 遊ぶ., There's probably a better example, but i can't remember one right now
>>
>>140471005
Genki's audio material, mykikitori.com and Erin's challenge all provide pretty good basic listening material. I've heard JapanesePod101 is good as well, if you can stand the gaijin guy. Other than that it's really more about quantity than anything I'd say.
>>
>>140471129
Just anime soundtracks/entire episodes and that's actually my study, not just study music.
>>
>>140471211
Thanks, at least there's one normal person here that doesn't recommend degenerate material. I'll check everything out.
>>
>all this genki dicksucking

Fucking why, it's the worst textbook, Minna no nihongo is a lot better desu senpai
>>
>>140471266
Anime is good as well, though. The speech often has very clear pronunciation, and the dialogue usually doesn't get too complex or long-winded either.
>>
>>140471367
The thing about using anime as a basis for your pronounciation , that like 90% of them uses some form of colloquialism, or other quirks. If supplemented with actual textbook material, it's good I guess
>>
>>140471351
Maybe it's reddit? They love Genki for some reason

Personally think every single Japanese coursebook is a piece of absolute shit
>>
>>140471367
It's good if your brain stopped developing around the age of 15. And I don't want to hear animated people talking about cute cats for 25 minutes. I'll just stick to some more realistic material.
>>
>>140471551
Well I'm majoring in oriental studies/japan, and even then they shove that shit on beginners. Thankfully if you were above N5, you only had to take advanced classes. But every single teacher there said that Genki is such a fucking shit book, but everyone uses it.
Reminds me, does JDT know 日本を知る? I fucking hate 佐藤さん and his entire family.

Does anyone know about some atheism podcasts in 日本語?
>>
>>140471891
Why? In case you're not trolling nobody outside of America needs to discuss atheism.
>>
>>140471936
I just like the topic and I've had quite a bit of experience in this field. What does America have to do with this? I'm not an American.
>>
>>140472010
>What does America have to do with this?
>nobody outside of America needs to discuss atheism
He's telling you you'll have a hard time finding serious podcast discussions about atheism outside of America.

Why do you I feel like you're about to say something retarded?
>>
>>140472127
Okay then, why does nobody out of America need to discuss atheism? And why is America special in this regard?
Maybe you have developed the skill of precognition by watching you know what.
>>
>>140471936
>nobody outside of America needs to discuss atheism.
Uhh I'd like it if the middle east did so
>>
>>140472267
Well, they aren't exactly 人間 so that' expected of them.
>>
>>140472231
Because America is the only civilized country that still antagonizes not being a christian
>>
>>140471891
>>140472010
I seriously doubt you could find an atheist in japan. While I wouldn't call them extremly religious, they still believe and follow some "supperstitions" for a lack of a better word.
There's a sizeable practicing christian minority though.
>>
>>140472402
I think state enforced atheism is the only way forward, but we should make incremental changes to not scare anyone away.
>>140472502
That's exactly why there need to be atheism debates in Japan.
>>
>>140472580
>baka gaijin wants to impose his own views on a completly different civilization

Are you British?
>>
>>140472613
I don't want to impose that on any particular civilization, I think it should be globally enforced, but first it needs to be enforced at the state level.
No, I'm not British.
>>
Stop getting baited.
>>
>>140472705
Also I would like to add that I don't believe in the concept of a nation. So there are no good atheism or at least nihilism podcasts in Japanese?

If you're not trolling, which I highly doubt, you're suffering from some high functioning autism right there. Why does it bother you that they attach little wish plaques to bamboos and throw rice and beans at new years?
>>
>>140472743

Half the replies are people getting baited but half are him replying to himself. There will be these retarded "conversations" regardless of whether anyone actually gets hooked.
>>
>>140472756
Start masturbating and wait until the 汁 comes out, you will feel very good and you'll just want to do your reps immediately.
>>
>>140472756
I honestly find I need to take breaks. One time I did an hour straight of reps and when I finished it took a long time to recover from feeling braindead. Not too long, my current setup is basically to do 100 cards then play a video game for 15 minutes or something.
>>
>>140472801
>high functioning autism
Can you give your understanding of this term and why do you think I have it?
Why does it bother me? Because it's very stupid to believe in such superstitions. People shouldn't believe that kind of stuff in the age of science and reason.
>>
>>140472894
sorry dude people are gonna do what they do deal with it it aint your place

worry about your own shit
>>
>>140473059
I am trying to enforce atheism in my circle at least and it's working pretty well. I doubt I could make it even to the city level, but that's a good start isn't it?
>>
>>140472894
You're clearly lacking social awareness , because you have difficulity understanding the importance of customs, tradition and culture.
Thinking that something is stupid isn't a valid reason to erase something. I think that moeshit is stupid, but I don't want to erase it. Japanese religion isn't even a militant one, they don't sacrifice babies, it hurts no one.
Also
>I dont want to impose

>>

>I dont want to impose
>I think it should be globally enforced
Wow you clearly can't read well. I said I want global atheism.

I don't think that customs are important if they aren't based on science and reason. Customs have a lot of logical fallacies in them and I think they should be erased because of that. Just like moeshit.
>>140473191
You too.
>>140473266
I don't want my friend to be stupid so it's best to help them see the truth.
I'm not the stereotypical atheist, I have good fashion sense and manners. So you can take your jokes someplace else.
>>140473300
Thanks, I hope some day the majority of people will be atheists and nihilists.

I'm doing the work for the third chapter of Genki and I'm confused by one of the exercises. The instructions say "look at the pictures below and make sentences using the cues / (a) Add the appropriate verbs to the following direct objects)" but in the first example it ignores them; it has 雑誌 --> 雑誌を読みます as the example but the cues for the problem are "library/2:00". Am I supposed to include the words from the cue in my answer or are the cues just there to help me pick the correct participle and verb?

Read Tae Kim instead. Genki assumes that you have a teacher explaining all this shit to you.
>>
>>140473423
I looked around and couldn't actually find a lot of actual articles on study breaks, just the one from 2011 about taking 15 minute breaks every 50 minutes when working, and stuff about the primacy and recency effect. So there's not nearly as much I thought.
