Post anime movies and discuss them.
I expected Jin-Roh to be full of just shooting and absolute fucking bloodshed but that's not even half of what the movie turned out to be about. Although I did find the pace of the film to begin to get quite slow about halfway through, I did come around to understand what the fuck everything was about by the end. Politics aren't really my thing but I was still really pleased with this

I really disliked this movie. Do people like how numbingly depressing it is? Do they like it for the visuals? I dont get it.

Catharsis nigga.

There is none.
It was a real shame this was forgotten about so easily. It was a lot of fun, and the climax was great.

Look up the definition and then try again.

It's about moving on. At the end the guy finally gets it. It's also an opposing take on a similar theme in the earlier Shinkai work called voices of a distant star where a guy is basically expected to wait for his first love for decades because they are separated by space-time.

The manga provides a much better ending.
Is there anyone else here who loved this film? The revelation and the realization of just what everything in the movie *meant* was so powerful to me.

Angela a cute!
A CUTE!!

There is none. The main character glancing back and smiling at the end of the film is not cathartic, it`s an afterthought. Shinkai realized that no audience would like a film with absolutely no silver lining and shoved it in at the last second.

I thought Shinkai wrote the text version first. I don't remember particularly having a problem with that version either. The theme of moving on was even more apparent as they focused on the story of the girl's happy adulthood which contrasted with the boy's shallow attempts at having other relationships, and just generally being an uncaring asshole which leads him to being overly nostalgic on love to begin with. Or perhaps that's more of a vicious circle.
Also, the film is still cathartic, because by definition catharsis is an attempt to evoke an emotion as a means to release the emotion, like homeopathy. Not that I agree with homeopathy.

I like it quite a bit. For me it was like watching a story about aliens, and trying to pick apart their motivations and see the humanity in it. Especially the commanding officer. The fact that she knows everything means that her strange personality is colored by her having to come to terms with what it means to be immortal.
When people criticize it its often because they don't really get the point of the characters. The videogame counterpart is an interesting perspective on the Kildren as well. Other people have criticized it because the planes have propellers onthe back, which they say is physically impossible. These people also know nothing about physics, aeronautics, or historical airplanes.

That's exactly how I felt when watching it the first time. It's so creepy, yet so real.
