I love it. Their relationship and characters are super interesting, and thematically very strong.

Reina is an idealist, and arguable a modernist. She believes in striving for perfection, that greatness is achievable, that her role is to struggle against mediocrity. It's easy for other people to see her as naive.

Kumiko is by her nature a realist, a pragmatist (though it could be inferred that events in her past stifled her prior idealism). She's a bit cynical, and she's just smart and open enough to identify and assume the pessimistic position on every issue.

The two philosophies clash vividly, time and time again because they don't understand each other, but eventually their curiosity draws them together. Each sees the other as so foreign, alien in how they live their life, they're drawn to it and want to understand. After they feel each other out and manage to lower their guards, they connect in a very intimate way. Reina intensely inspires Kumiko, and Kumiko bolsters Reina when she is about to falter.

The beautiful things about this show are:

Kumiko's arc, going from never expecting to win to her impassioned plea to Reina about not compromising herself for anybody, for any reason. She has never believed in anything before, but now she believes in Reina with all her being, and she's starting to believe in herself as well.

Reina's struggle against mediocrity's attempts to tear her down, coming into conflict with artificial social constructs intended to protect mediocrity, and standing strong against them as a beacon of idealism. She shatters the delusion of Ribbons, showing her the grievous error of her ways.

It's the two of them against the world, and they face it with strength and solidarity. They're truly portrayed as heroes, and that's what I love about it. it's basically Ayn Rand without all the heavy-handed bluster about capitalism. Add to that the incredible direction and visual storytelling, and its one of my favorite shows in years.

Reina falls in love with Kumiko.

Unable to confess, she is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, she immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on her as well.

But, the next day, when she recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at her with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, she finds out that the girl she called is not the same girl she fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the musical instruments they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, TRUMPET ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of ONGAKU.

It's actually a really well-written relationship, and one that is a lot more realistic than what is usually portrayed in anime. The awkwardness of the situation and the sort of stilted way the two of them react to one another is quite natural, and I enjoyed it very much.

Anime fans are hopeless romantics and see sex and romance everywhere without realizing that there are different kind of relationships. Probably doesn't help that the story is written by an adult woman who has completely different point of views on this kind of thing. Japanese people have "skinship" culture it might feel weird for someone who's not used to it. Reminds me when I heard that Ookiku Furikabutte is "really gay" and then I watched it and it was all about baseball theories but not gayness.

Literally this. /a/nons somehow don't realize there's a significant cultural component to this. It makes sense that one would watch episode 8 and think "are they gonna make out right now?" The same thing passed through my head. But we should be aware that we're affected by the society we're born in. We're all a little biased by the latent homophobia in our culture, something which is more specific to contemporary US culture than it is to a lot of European and Asian cultures.

Does this mean that no nips thought the same thing? No, of course not. I do think that the director was aware that a little bit of a yuri tease would boost sales, they'd have to be incredible naive to not consider that possibility. I think it was executed in a way that makes sense for the characters while still being provocative enough to leave wiggle room for shippers.

Anyway, I think that lots of /a/nons specifically don't want to accept something like this relationship. There are a couple of groups: People who see any amount of possible yuri-baiting and immediately drop and start shitposting. People who just want to mindlessly watch anime and paint it in really broad strokes. People who are incapable of respecting "moeshit" and trash it on stylistic grounds alone. People who were expecting light comedy iyashikei, basically k-on 2.0, and all this drama and character rained on their parade.

It's rare that you find /a/nons who are actually open to all sorts of shows (I think they post less often by their nature). The anime fandom is all about niche communities, after all. But they should keep in mind that you can be discerning and have strong personal taste while still having a broad palette.

I'm not really invested in her love life and don't really care much either way. I was always more interested in her playing and the band she was part of.

Anyway, the point you make here is something I really have to start reminding myself of. I follow the daily Tomo-chan updates and wait for more Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san like a dog waiting for it's owner. Two of the most ship-baiting mangas there is.
I think the whole romance baiting has taken over me too much and I gotta confess, I wanted to pick up this anime at first but then got reluctant when I heard about having it next to no yuri undertones that I thought it would have.
Again my real reason to pick this up was to watch some cute girl get together with some other cute girl, nothing more.
