My speculation so far is, due to writing economy, the enemies are Martians from hundreds of years ago.

After the historic intro it jumps to a scene making the point that the main character wants to travel to Mars but she can't because grades and yadda yadda. That probably wasn't merely filling time. She's going to end up traveling to Mars to fight aliums. Also mentioning the canals on Mars thing is related to the War of the Worlds era belief that Martians constructed them.

No idea why the civilization vanished or why only 2 mecha showed up in the feudal era, then nothing until whatever year the anime is set in. The small dino mecha don't look like they have cockpits but the big ones might have living aliens inside. Samurai man got some stasis pod from Mars in order to arrive in the future, which AI probably wouldn't lug around.

Somehow, I cannot find big flaws. The plot exposition was sufficient, the CGI looks good (excepting the invasion at the end where the small mecha had literally no sense of weight), action was pretty good (I was expecting the military to be over run by the invaders Xenoblade-style but they actually defeated them), characters are nothing amazing but I like ditzy girls and animation is consistently good (I kinda love the walking animation).

I'm gonna follow this. It's rare enough that I watch a mecha show so a change of pace will be nice. And I enjoy the mystery aspect.

Reminder ignore that Kayoanifag, few of them are really fucking annoying.

I can't say it was a particularly strong first episode, but more than enough to keep me going. I would say the first ep was Argevollen-tier which means I have extremely high hopes for the show's development later on.
The CG blends in really well and the mecha are nice. The heroine's design is much less bland in motion but the blondie is still a blandie.
Kind of expected the swordsman and the mecha to be from different worlds though.

I think the best we can argue about Kuromukuro mecha is that they're good enough. The designs could be better but we're glad they're there. The CG could blend better but this is a studio that does teen soap operas. The whole thing feels more like a love letter to mecha shows than an unironic mecha show.

I wasn't expecting to be as interested in this show as I ended up. Some people have complained the first half of the episode was boring. I expect in the coming episodes it will prove to be actually very informative with plenty of foreshadowing and all that good stuff. And it managed to do that with only briefly getting into exposition to describe the artifacts.
