Aria isn't as focused on characters as most SoL (which is what appeals to me the most in a SoL). That's why its generally baby's first SoL and people who don't generally like SoL like Aria. Its mostly scenery porn, the setting, and OST that get people hooked.
Also the pacing is complete ass. The manga's is much better.

That being said, some episodes were really good, but most of the episodes were extremely dull.

Maybe but forcing yourself through 36ish episodes of an anime you find boring just to get to the good stuff can really kill your enjoyment of a series.

But if you enjoy the 36 previous episodes of episodic stories with slow, but gradual character development and the exploration of the unique world of Aria, then when substantial development of the story and characters finally happen, the payoff is immense and truly memorable. Watching the anime before reading the manga helps too, at least in my case as the manga was still amazing even after watching the anime.

The world and world-building is truly unique to Aria and I can see why people get attached to the series because of that, but I'm saying that if you going into Aria for the characters, you are going to have a bad time. Plenty of other SoL anime have much better characters and gradual development. The characters are pretty much secondary in the world of Aria and the character development is very sporadic until Origination.
