Finally decided to update this with last seasons
>>

Is Kabaneri fantasy? Seems more like sci-fi.

If I missed something in the last seasons is time to say it now.

Just high fantasy or things that are REALLY close to high fantasy, not urban/contemporary fantasy or just like our world but with a fantasy twist.
>>
>>139739565
Theorically its fantasy with lots of steampunk
>>
>>139739599
I see.

Do you think the chart should be narrowed down to things that are generally accepted as good instead of putting everything on there?
>>
>>139739408
>>139739575
If all you're doing is randomly chuck fantasy series without caring about whether the show is good or not, people can achieve the same result by clicking the Fantasy tag on MAL.
>>
>>139739676
That's the eternal question. I am more into the "narrowed" thing, but I let myself drowned by /a/ in the very first thread.

Included only a few then people started "include this" "include that" and when I realized was that big.

I think we could make some kind of "editor's choice" mark to those shows worth watching but probably would happen the same again since everyone would have his particular recommendation.

Yes, I am the highly suggestible type as you could expect from something that has watched almost that entire list.
>>
>>139739787
>caring about whether the show is good or not

Its fantasy, you can't expect much quality to begin with.

How many good fantasy shows are? Berserk, Guin Saga, the first Lodoss and...that's pretty much all.
>>
>>139739889
That doesn't change the argument.
>>
>>139739889
There are plenty of good fantasy series. You just won't agree to them, that's all.

Which is why making charts like these are pointless in light of the current climate where you can easily ask on mal etc for recs specially tailored to what you actually like.

Bahamut is better than Lodoss in every single way, that series is just a massive clusterfuck where literally nothing makes any sense and the characters act completel irrational.Actually not only Bahamut is better than it but pretty much every single show on that list is.
>>
How's Deltora Quest? I remember reading only the first book.
>>
>>139739889
Those sucked. Berserk and Guin Saga especially were shit adaptations.
>>
>>139740312
It's apparently quite good, but it's only half-subbed and the only way to watch said subbed episodes is on Youtube.
>>
>>139740312
It wasn't like the books at all but still was nice, but you pretty much can only find it dubbed

I see, it can't be helped. I don't mind the dub, but it's really sad that the only way to watch the last 13 episodes is by streaming.
>>
So, /a/ which one the current modalities you prefer?

-Traditional fantasy (all the characters are from the fantastic world) Lodoss, Orphen, Rokka no Yuusha, Arslan...

-Paralell world (Characters from our world travel to a fantastic world) El Hazard, Escadlowne, Konosuba, Re:Zero...

-Game world (Characters from our wourld travel into a game or the game itself becomes real) SAO, Log Horizon, Overlord, Hack

>guin saga
>arguably the greatest work of japanese modern fantasy, if not fiction in general

there is no justice in this world

Dark fantasy.
>>
>>139739575
>>139739408
you should add version numbers or edit dates
>>
Magitech "It's science, I ain't gotta explain shit" setting.
>>
>>139741814
Traditional. Parallel is ok depending on the nature of it.

Game World a shit. SAO and Overlord would have been better without the game bs and just be a standard fantasy. Just make up some excuse about some weird magic phenomenon for them.
>>
>>139742014
>Dark Fantasy anime

I wish. Does even exist one aside of Berserk and Claymore?
>>
>>139741989
Author died anyway.
>>
>>139742229
And story ended as well, it just has a bunch of epilogue material. Perfect time for a complete adaptation.
>>
>>139739575

>>
>>139741814
There are a few good shows in each genre, although anime doesn't usually do traditional fantasy very well.

Basilisk
>>
>>139739575
is arslan really high fantasy?
>>
>>139741814
Traditional. I'm real sick of the other two.

Unless the parallel world's 'true' world is set in the future or post-apocalypse or something, that could be neat, but current day into fantasy world is so god damned overdone.

I'm not sure I can think of anything that would redeem game world scenarios to me.
>>
>>139741814
Traditional fantasy.
Non-heroic epic.
No grand plotline the characters are sucked into.
Black comedy about dysfunctional fuckwits trying to get by the world.

Final fucking destination.
>>
>>139741814
Anything but Game World. Fuck that shit, just play an actual game instead. Ruins immersion the most.
>>
>>139743595

God I'd love this. Fantasy SoL shit.

It is, but the anime didn't really covered the part whith elder liches and magic swords.

>Unless the parallel world's 'true' world is set in the future or post-apocalypse or something, that could be neat, but current day into fantasy world is so god damned overdone.
Overdone? We've only had a few, and if you exclude modern guy(s) get magically transported stuff, the only series that made interaction between the modern world and the fantasy world a significant part of its setting was Gate.
>I'm not sure I can think of anything that would redeem game world scenarios to me.
Not even Log Horizon?

What annoys me from world traveling and games is that they do absolutely nothing with it, most part of the time they even forget completly about it and go straight high fantasy to the point it could be exactly the same if the MC was a random villager from that world instead a world traveler/player.
>>
>>139744238
>Not even Log Horizon?
Well, at least LH the part of them being players has a role in the story, thats kind of a redeeming point since it proves that them being from other world contributes something to the plot, is not as bad as those shows where they travel and instantly forget the "coming from an other world" part.
>>
>>139743964
>Dungeon Meshi

Nah. I certainly do like it but I'm talking more like Chaika except without the grandiose storyline of collecting body parts and summoning big daddy. A Pratchett styled adventure, I'd say.
>>
>>139744266
Exactly. It's also what annoyed me about shows like SAO. By the end of the day, it's blatantly obvious that the creators are only interested in self-inserts and fulfilling teenage power fantasy rather than actually telling a story.

Grimgar came close and would have made it if they just cut out the damn intro about them being from our world. I don't know about the novels, but as far as the anime is concerned, the story would have worked out just as well if they told us they're natives and are from some poor village and thus need to do all that quests shit to sustain themselves.
>>
>>139744358
Yeah, for all the criticism about s2, I appreciate that they actually address those things, like that suicidal guild who went on kamikaze runs out of desperation to see their own homes/world. Those little things alone make it better than other 'stuck in a game setting' shows.

Bagserk anime has some serious style and isn't really missing anything vital from the manga for a two-cour show so I couldn't call it a shit anime nor shit adaptation, especially considering what it's against.

From the last season both Konosuba and Grimgar (talking about the anime dont know the LN)

From this season RE:Zero totally forgot already and its just episode 2.

Overlord does it too to a certain point, this one has always present that his from other world but all the plot and revolves about Ains exploring the world he is now.

SAO events and characters are those of a fantasy story but are actually players inside a game.

Also tate no yuusha (manga) comes to mind as well.

And checking the list...Kiba. Dog Days, ZnT, El hazzard, Isekai seikishi, Shning tears, Ixion Saga, Mondaiji, all the series in that list with paralel world the character goes from one world to another but all the story and events takes place on that other world. The other world its just basically an excuse to make the MC specials, they could say they are choosen ones from their worlds and the series wouldn't change a single bit.

In fact the only series where there is actual interaction between the two worlds are Gate and Outbreak company (that is a comedy).

Of course is not something that ruins a series, I'm not saying that, you can have a great series or a fun series with a MC from other world, Its just is "annoying" because is completly pointless.
>>
>>139746458
>>that whole videogame section filled with trash

Videogames adaptations are shit, breaking news. They still anime about high fantasy

>>calling Lodoss a classic sword and sorcery when its literally D&D as are a few others like Slayers

Louie is also literally D&D, your point is?

>>using broad label 'JRPG like' as a section

Every anime is different enough to the next one, every single of them could be its own category if we get picky. Is a broad label because is a broad variety of shows, are you going to make a different section for each 2-3 shows?

>>separating OVA and TV like it matters in the slightest
Matters so people doesn't look something and they get their hopes up just to discover its just a short ova
>>separating movies for no reason at all as well
Same
>>missing a shitload of anime
That's why we are here, isn't it?

There could be a separate category for babby's first weeaboo fantasy for One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, Madoka and Gintama.

Also, Little Witch Academia under OVA.

>Berserk, Guin Saga, the first Lodoss
Have you even watched any of these three?

The Berserk anime was nothing special, the manga is the only thing worth investing any time into
Same goes for Guin Saga
Lodoss isn't that good either, it just happened to be go-to material for this genre 20 years ago
>>
>>139749238
Literally what
>>
>>139759442
Not that anon but I have to agree that Dragon Ball, at least the first part (Everything until Piccolo Senior dies) could perfectly fit in that list, since it was basically an RPG
>>
>>139751662
What'd you expect? I could tell right away from the description that it was trash.
>>
>>139739408
Some of this needs to be removed. Fairy tale is not a fantasy anime. At least not the traditionally accepted definition of fantasy. It is more like Naruto, a generic battle shounen.

Fantasy is shit like Slayers, Berserk, Record of Lodoss War, etc. It's your list, but you really should remove generic shounen shit that is muddying your list.
>>
>>139739408
I might be blind, but where is Shingeki no Bahamut? That is as high fantasy as it gets.
>>
>>139739889
I've seen Lodoss – all of it – because it was more or less forced upon me by a friend. It was exactly what you'd expect from a badly edited D&D campaign adaptation: characters made no sense, plot was disjointed, overall setting was uninspiring and bland. Yes, it sucked.
(I'm not dissing D&D by the way, it can be a fun game as long as you don't play with nerds. But being a fun game to play and being fun to watch as a literal anime adaptation are quite different things.)

No FMA? This list is invalid.

But seriously, what's the added value of a list like this above just going to http://myanimelist.net/anime/genre/10/Fantasy ? Because I can tell you right now in what ways MAL is better: it's easier to filter, titles are sorted on popularity so the absolute trash doesn't clutter the list as much, it has more titles, it has title descriptions and it displays a rating for each title.
>>
>>139768308
Because if you look for "Fantasy" in MAL or any other data base, you'll get from series about detectives to series about japanese folklore and of course shitloads of urban fantasy and high school shows.
>>
>>139768559
But you could say the same about quite some of the titles in OP's list. Again, I fail to see the added value.
>>
>>139771277
Looking at 1 chart better than looking at 20 pages of shows?
>>
>>139771744
Or you can streamline it further and just create a thread on their rec forum. There, even lesser work and more spoonfeeding.

And since the chart is just a random list of shows, I can just look at 1 page and attain the same results. Just because there are 20 pages doesn't mean I have to look at all 20 of them.
>>
>>139771744
Well, it seems like the lazy option at first. But if you'd actually start to watch all of these, you'd quickly discover a lot of them suck, so you have to look these up on MAL or some site anyway. And many good shows aren't on the list.
So in the end it's less work to flip through a few pages on MAL because you've got the descriptions, tags, reviews and ratings right there, and you'll download and watch less crap. And there's more to choose from to boot.
