I watched the TV version only, so apparently I watched the wrong version. Still, the show was just so disjointed in its presentation. I thought it would be a sort of slice of life/oddity of the week deal with Kyoto and those two kids hanging around having fun, but the show decided to focus on it's plot while also being really obtuse in how they presented it. Also FLCL getting a TV series can only end badly.

Great to see Patlabor is getting some more attention in these threads, it's one of the few good Cop/Police focused TV shows in the medium, since most are OVA's like Mad Bull and Tank Police.

This has been said many times, but your 3x3 is still one of if not the best looking in these threads, same with you taste. Magical Girls, psychological thrillers, and romance. Overall I can't help but always smile at this 3x3, despite some problems with some of the picks.

NHK is pretty good from a presentation stand point: a bleak look into the NEET life style and the kinds of social disorders that lead to it all while being punctuated with an excellent OST. However the anime plays on the more sad and depressing elements of the series to much and then just decides to give a super fuck yeah hype ending with the MC battling a weird ghost-nhk monster all to the sound of the ED. The manga and LN are a lot more subtle and the ending ain't all sunshine and rainbows.

Gankutsou is an excellent examples of the conversion of classic literature into a Japanese animated TV series. While the CGI duels are really awful to look at, the overall style of Gankutsou, especially with the French introduction to every episode.

Wings of Honeymayonnaise is so god damn beautiful. Despite it going all 2001 at the end it's a pretty great character piece about the prospects of shouldering the burden of a country's combined efforts and fearing for your own personal well being.

I thought it was pretty clearly explained in the shows opening about a "rose-coloured campus life". Basically it's to quit regretting or wishing for the perfect life because it's not practical and instead enjoy the life you lead and value the friends and relationships you've built.

I suppose the manga kind of spoiled me in that regard since you have a certain level of control in the pace at which you read. Naturally the anime lingers on large shots of the city's architecture, but I felt they held on them too long. The 20-minute length of the show kind of made each episode a chore to get though. You are forced to digest a series which is primarily described as comfy and pretty to look for a set period rather than at you own controlled pace like the manga.

I prefer slower pacing for slice of life anime, the scenery shots along with the soundtrack set the mood perfectly. Being able to read something at your own pace can apply to any manga and i don't think it somehow makes it inherently any better.

Just most of the first season, like you said. I know that's probably why I don't have a very favorable view of it, but the fact that it felt like I was having to work my way through a show that had little appeal to me in either characters or narrative meant that I was only making myself dislike it more than it deserves. Maybe one day when I don't feel like I have to force it, I'll pick it back up and manage to get to what a lot of people say is the real heart of the show.

You should try taking it slow if you ever give it another chance, one or two episodes a day is the best way to watch Aria. the first season isn't as strong as the last two and is a little hard to appreciate without having seen the rest of it since it's mostly foreshadowing what's to come. On my first viewing I didn't really get all too hooked until about the last 3 or 4 episodes of Animation. If you're not too big into slice of life it's not exactly the best gateway show, maybe try something like Non Non Biyori instead beforehand.
