Familiarity? It's wrong, you can fucking hear them say the original names, and it doesn't even make sense for them to be named in English in the first place. It's like those retards who edited Digimon Tri subs to have the Murrican names.

So you want to replace characters' names when they're puns? Hell, everyone watching should get naruhodo, anyway. Should HS call the Bungou Stray Dogs guys Hemingway and Camus because you might not know who Dazai is?

>In English versions, Wright's name was localized to present a similar meaning to English-speaking audiences. His first name is also a mythical reference: to the phoenix, known for "rising from the ashes", an allusion to his almost impossible comebacks, or "turnabouts", during trials. In fact, the fifth case in the American version of the first game is titled, "Rise from the Ashes." His surname is a pun, allowing for wordplay (such as "Right, Wright?" and "Phoenix Wrong", the name used for Phoenix Wright parodies)
>>
>>139707704
A phoenix comes back from the ashes, like how he does in cases, and he's usually right

>As the game's dialogue consists of a lot of wordplay and misunderstandings, Smith would analyze scenes before writing them: he would see what the scenes were trying to accomplish, and where the beats in them were. After he had the structure of a scene in his head, he would write it; at times he was able to make use of the original Japanese dialogue, but most of the time he had to come up with new ideas himself. At several points, the English wordplay was inspired by the wordplay in the Japanese version. At some points, it was not possible to do wordplay in the same places as in the Japanese version, so Smith would change the structure of the scene slightly. At other points, Smith came up with a joke or funny line, and changed the scene to make the joke work. Around half of the jokes were rewritten based on the characters present in the scene, rather than being translations of the Japanese jokes.

Crunchy uses multiple sub tracks in their streams. If HS could make their ripper take them all they would appease the localized vs. straight translation fags and throw in other languages as a bonus.

>>139708757
Don't need to. I downloaded the .ass of the localized subs and muxed them into v1. I'm just surprised HS can't figure out how to do multiple sub tracks themselves to keep idiots from complaining.

That's because speedsubbers gave up when they realized they could never compete with a "group" that simply rips subs from companies that get the episodes before they air.

Every translation you ever enjoyed is a so called "rewrite". That's including literature, not just video games and manga.
>...I never feel that I’m going from a set of grammatical structures in Japanese and mechanically transferring them into a set of radically different structures in English. What I’m doing is getting whatever I get out of the Japanese text—the images, the rhythms—then do the best I can to write the English in such a way that I’m conveying what I’m getting out of the Japanese. It’s pretty subjective. I very often feel I’m writing original—almost original—fiction.
That's Jay Rubin talking about translating Haruki Murakami. Obviously translating literature and subtitling anime are extremely different affairs, there's no verbal imagery to translate in anime for instance, that's all done by the visual art so there's less room for liberties in that area.

Most of the names in Gyakuten Saiban are literal jokes and puns. When translating, leaving jokes in Japanese is doing a massive disservice to English viewers. I've heard another translator say: English viewers shouldn't be scratching their heads at the same time a Japanese viewer would be laughing. This is such a simple concept that I'm a little baffled when people in these threads insist that the names be left in Japanese.
>>
>>139710641
>English viewers shouldn't be scratching their heads at the same time a Japanese viewer would be laughing.
So wouldn't English viewers just be thinking "Why are these Japanese people laughing at his name, is there anything funny about Phoenix?"
At that point you may as well be scratching your head. There doesn't seem to be much point in changing the name when the reactions of the two groups will still be so different. At least if you kept it as Naruhodo etc. some people could show off on the internet about how good their Japanese is.
>>
>>139710641
People on this board aren't your average English viewer. Everyone here has watched hundreds of anime and is familiar with Japan, their culture and their Bushido code.

> that's all done by the visual art so there's less room for liberties in that area.
There's also an audio track that people can't just ignore.
You can't suddenly have another character talking even when it would fit better in the language you translate to.

What this fails to appreciate is that anyone watching anime will probably either already have knowledge of Japan, it's customs and the way it's language works, or at the very least is open to the fact that they are coming from a very different background and as such things are not going to be a perfect transition. Most people are in fact not watching anime in order to get a Westerners perspective on what they're reading or watching and would probably more often than not would prefer the text be as close to the original as possible with helpers or markers to help them understand what they may be missing.
I find the fact that most translators seem to think that understanding a different cultural background is nearly impossible for their viewers to be honestly quite pompous. This isn't the 1950's anymore.

On the Second Fucking Page:
>"Aomame" was her real name ... written with exactly the same characters as the word for "green peas" and pronounced with the same four syllables, "Ah-oh-mah-meh."
It goes on to explain that Aomame is an odd name, and everyone looks askance at it, and mixes her up with different beans.
Then for the next 1154 pages, her name is given as Aomame because that's her fucking name.

Murakami's books are full of strange characters with strange names and I expect that an explanation of a name like that is not far off from if not the same as the original prose. Incidentally, would you have known Aomame is considered an odd name if the book hadn't explicitly told you so? To most English readers all Japanese names sound equally foreign. These are the kinds of considerations translators constantly have to make.
Changing the names and setting like Capcom did with Ace Attorney isn't a decision that's made lightly, in no way am I trying to make it sound like it is. There are more considerations translators have to take when thinking about what to change than just translating jokes, there issues like tone, readability and so on. .
>>
>>139713737
The translation of the explanation is perfect. I'm lauding the fact that he kept Aomame as Aomame, rather than doing the obvious thing of translating the name and ruining the subtlety of having the kanji for peas show up at dramatic moments.

>Changing the names and setting like Capcom did with Ace Attorney isn't a decision that's made lightly
That's the difference between localization and translation. They didn't change the setting to Los Angeles in the games because it more accurately conveyed the story, they did it because it would sell better. The names had the same amount of thought put into them: Phoenix Wright will sell better than Naruhodou Ryuuichi. That someone put the time into making the names somewhat reflective of the wordplay in the original is praiseworthy, but the overall process was not.
