Why do they drift instead of taking a normal line around the corners in Initial D? Grip cornering is faster. Am I missing a significant piece of cultural context?
>>
a) They're young men doing something to spend their time.
b) You can block overtaking with drifting easier since your car will take more than one lane.
>>
Drifting is stylish.
>>
>>139687910
>a) They're young men doing something to spend their time.
But they're also very competitive, and if you corner faster, you win.

>b) You can block overtaking with drifting easier since your car will take more than one lane.
Why does the trailing car drift?

>>139688026
What about winning? The show takes place in a very competitive scene.
>>
>>139688053
If you do go through the turn faster without drifting as you said, you'd hit he car drifting and get shit on forever for doing so

It's to keep their momentum so they can exit the corners faster.
>>
>>139689550
Slow in fast out has been proven to be faster. If anything, it's to keep the RPMs up but even then it's still slower to drift than grip a corner.
>>
>>139689990
how could slow in fast out be faster than fast in fast out. keep in mind that they are racing downhill
>>

>not drifting when leaving your house
>not drifting to park your car

>not drifting to stop in the traffic lights

Are you even living in the 90s?
>>
Because it looks cool. And if you don't win while looking cool you don't win at all.
>>
>>139690211
Drifting is fast in, slow out. You lose speed when you exit the corner from a drift. You have to lift off the throttle gently to return grip to the rear tires and straighten out.
>>
>>139690623
I guess they just do it to look cool then.

>>139690325

Should have posted this on /o/ where people know fuck all about cars, you pseudo-scientific armchair experts disappoint me.
>>
>>139687864
It's a Japanese delusion of grandeur.

>>139690211
When drifting, the tires are spinning freely without them gripping on the ground which basicly means that your tires aren't pushing your car forward. Drifting also wears your tires down a lot faster than normal cornering. Worn tires won't handle well and you'll have trouble handling the car later during the race. No one in serious tarmac racing drifts because they want their tires to last as long as possible. Real racing is all about tires and suspension. WRC and other gravel racing is a different story though.
Fast in, fast out would mean that you're doing the corner at a constant speed which really wont maximize your speed. Slow in, fast out means that you are accelerating during corner. This will shift weight to the rear tires which increase the grip. If you're doing it right, you should be at the edge of your power band when your exiting the corner so that you can floor the throttle for the fastest possible acceleration.

I'm no expert, but maybe this link will help you understand.

Try out simracers like Assetto Corsa and Project Cars.

>>139690816
Yes. It's like dancing contests where judges give points to the racers depending on certain factors.

A narrow mountain road is more like a rally course than a wide track where you have more of a play in which line to choose, drifting one corner can also be a setup to get your car in an optimal angle to attack the next corner. Road condition and surface can vary (gravel and leaves slippery -> wider turning radius) and drifting can block your opponent from passing you or force him to take a less than optimal line in order to overtake you.
That's at least all i can think of in defence of drifting vs grip, but the real question is how did the ae86 suspension not shatter itself during the first gutter-run?
>>
>>139693111
Even at the start, most of the car was not standard, but probably not high end.

>>139692217

Two theories based on one fact, they're young not so rich people.

1. They're drifting because they push each other to brake very late.

2. Only tires they can afford are so bad that you have to drift.

all of the characters who drove 4wd cars drove grip

>grip cornering is faster
back then it was viable since engines were less powerful and tires were more primitive
>>
>>139695387
And they do. They don't drift through every single corner. Just the ones where drifting allows a more optimal line given the types of cars they're driving. Driving is a pretty complex process and there are a lot of factors that determine the best way through a corner, but then you probably don't know the difference between an engine's power curve and a power slide.
>>
It's a Japanese thing, they used to drift down the hills in the night.

Are you trying to say that they're drifting to keep the rpm up? That doesn't make sense for a downhill race. I think they're doing it to make it look better.

You prefer to insult me rather than having a discussion. Cool bro.

From little I know, drifting is almost never faster especially if you have stupid angles like they have in the show. If you get aligned with the next corner then it might make sense but that never happens in the show.
