He does, but it's not necessarily a good thing. The novels bring up the possibility that all the timelines he lives in continue on even after he dies and reloops. So he gets shown one timeline where he committed suicide to forcible end the loop, but the loop continues on after he commits suicide and the half-elf walks in and sees his corpse, and breaks down crying.

Arc 2 (where the manga is covering) ends with both the mansion and the village saved and Rem falling in love with Subaru.
Arc 3 starts with the queen competition dragon rites happening at the capital and Emilia heads to attend it along with 4 other candidates.

first half:
Subaru loses trust of everyone, gets his ass beat by Julius in a duel after making an ass of himself, broken and alone except for Rem, he starts training under Vilhelm.
Despite all that happened Rem stays with Subaru's side and supports him with unconditional love.
He finds out the mansion is in danger and tries to find a way to get back, but the White Whale of Gluttony is a threat on the road to avoid.
On the way he and Rem are captured and killed by the Cult. In some loops he manages to reach the mansion alone, but only to find the children he befriended piled in a mount of corpse, Ram mutilated in front of them, Emilia dead, and Puck's rage causing the entire land to freeze and kill Subaru.

In one of the encounters Subaru is tortured and have to see Rem slowly ripped to pieces to death and he is driven insane.
The next loop he's a drooling madman, but Rem tries to carry him back to the mansion, only to end up getting mutilated again and again.
Subaru finally manages to snap out of his madness thanks to anger, and vows to end this in the next loop.

Subaru realizes he needs to reconcile with people in the capital and find help.
He learns to atone for his arrogance, use his brain, and win back the trust of people.
He eventually manages to bring Julius, Vilhelm, soldiers under Cruche, and mercenaries of Anastasia to follow him.
The next dozens of chapters is dedicated to fighting the Whale. Those eaten by the White Whale are literally ERASED from the world, as if they never existed. Only Subaru can remember them. The group eventually defeats the whale.

After the White Whale is defeated, the save point moves forward again.
Subaru organizes the remaining team to confront the Cult of the Witch and his arch nemesis, Betelgeuse.
Long story short they fail several times of course, as the Bishop is no joke. But each time Subaru learns his methods and motives, and can plan out the next loop.

After the battle is finally won by Subaru and Betelgeuse, the Bishop of Sloth is killed, Subaru finds out that Bishop of Gluttony has eaten Rem. She is in a coma, and no one, not even Ram remembers who Rem was.
Rem was the only one who stayed with Subaru and supported him all this time, and he couldn't bear this end. So he kills himself.

Subaru wakes up to realize by defeating the Witch Cult the save point had moved forward to right before he finds Rem.
It is now impossible to go back in time to save Rem. He despairs.

End of Arc 3.

Oh and bonus, we're in arc 6 and he still hasn't managed to save her.
He's still carrying her comatose body around.

That's not bad luck, the first arc with Elsa trying to kill him is only because he involved himself with Emilia. If he had just decided to abandon her / avoid the warehouse, he could have completely avoided that confrontation.

In the second arc, Rem and Ram keep killing/trying to kill him because he smells like the Witch of Envy, i.e. they mistook him for a member of the Witch Cult who was trying to spy on them. At first that smell was faint, so they kinda brushed it off "maybe it was our imagination" or, "maybe someone related to him is involved" kind of thing, but that he himself was mostly innocent. But everytime he loops, the scent of the Witch of Envy gets stronger and stronger, so in later loops they basically immediately went to "This guy is definitely a member of the Witch's Cult".

I.e. if he just decided to dump his current people and associate with other people, he'd be perfectly fine. At least unless the Witch of Envy decides to purposely intervene.

So Subaru's allies are supposed to be rival faction - it's just that none of them are actually bad people and when true evil knocks on door they ally up to fight.
