Airi gets no appearances, no development, and she only is able to become relevant because of the 15 year coma. Near the end of the manga it's her appearances which cause the story to drag on instead of advancing the plot this why she was removed from the anime.

Why 15 years? Just so Kayo could move on and remove her as a love interest? The mangaka has no shame in admitting the coma was just a cheaper revival that allowed him to conveniently develop characters lazily without showing them. Satoru somehow manages to wake up just in time to see Kayo's baby and be the same age he was in the present. This is just one of the many convenient situations this story manages to insert.
