Lots of other points already make her fucking insufferable but this one is just plain insulting. Truly one of the worst examples of Mary Sues that had came out in recent years. Medaka is modest and Haruhi a timid girl compared to this. It's like a combination of plot armor and writer boner.

As far as skill, I'd say it went something like:
Laura=Charlotte>Rin>Cecelia>Ichika>Houki

Laura and Charlotte are both very focussed and efficient, and seem a roughly even match for each other (which says a lot about Charlotte, considering Laura's background).

Rin and Cecelia both have candidate training and personality weaknesses, but Rin edges Cecelia out due to the latter's inflexibility; she has no answer to close-in opponents.

Ichika and Houki both started from scratch, but Ichika had higher aptitude and showed a real eye for combat that could prove impressive in time. He's promising but completely held back by inexperience.

Houki kind of sucks. She has low aptitude and spends the whole tourney fight getting shot. She needs a bleeding edge machine and a sneaky nanomachine supplement to break even.

The regular manga is an adaptation of the first anime series, and is basically the same.

However, there is also now a reboot manga of sorts, distinguished from the other one by appending the author's name (Yuuki Homura).

Unlike the series' actual author, he actually gives a shit, so his manga has thus far retained some of the more character related stuff that was cut from the anime, while trimming the fat a bit (there's a lot less physical 'comedy' of the girls attacking Ichika, for instance). Well, he made a pretty good showing of himself against Autumn, considering the apparent difference in experience.

This isn't really an argument I would ever have though, because you're trying to put me in an indefensible position. Things don't change in Infinite Stratos because the author doesn't want to handle anything besides status quo.

I think Ichika has potential because scenes like the Cecelia fight show he can be remarkably observant and intuitive. He lasted longer than anyone else she'd fought despite his inexperience and his unit being on factory settings, identified the disadvantage of her drones and then picked apart their patterns with remarkable ease. He only lost on a technicality because he rushed off half cocked like an idiot and didn't know how is machine worked. If someone like that knew what they were doing they'd be an unholy terror.

Now, it'll never happen, because nothing ever does in IS, but as long as the series remains in stasis, so does his potential. That's my reasoning.

Byakushiki's one weapon is a melee one, and drains its users own shield to make its attacks extra powerful. It's very deadly on paper, but is kind of a high risk high reward weapon, since missing with it leaves the user vulnerable. Chifuyu could pull it off, and she only ever used a melee weapon anyway (I believe Tabane based it off of her style), but Ichika is too much of a scrub at present.

It's kind of shown that actual military use IS have higher specs than special prototypes, school oriented IS and National representative models. At the end of season one it took 5 special models operated by students to take on one military use IS. Also models like Shiroshiki and Silver Gospel seem to have a lot better protection with full body atmor and other stuff conspicuously absent in all school models.

They are conventional weapons, but the IS is unparalleled as a platform. It's as fast as a jet, a lot more manoeuvrable and can mount all sorts of special equipment due to the capabilities of the core. Proper military models have staying power too, considering Silver Gospel was cruising around for days.

Clearly they haven't if you can take one down with an ICBM. As it is it seems more like "White Knight piloted by Chifuyu renders all previous military technology obsolete because she's a living incarnation of destruction but all other IS and their pilots aren't so great."

This is just a core conceit of the setting to allow this technology. It's not even the only series to do this. At the end of the day, it comes down to whether or not you can suspend your disbelief about the overwhelming superiority of one type of weapon, be it Mobile Suits, Objects, Bolos or whatever.

Although I would say that an ICBM has never been a 'conventional' weapon, that this is the Frodo 'well why don't they just use nukes for everything' question, and that the first thing an IS does in the series is shoot down ICBMs. Not that it would need to, it's not like you can hit a fast aerial target with something like that.
