They didn't walk for the entire journey. They initially started on a carriage and then switched to a boat. I think it's quite possible to cover much of the distance from Chang'an to Luoyang by boat.

Of course, some of this also reflects the receding state power which is unable to get every citizen recorded on the official census (and hence, eligible to pay tax) but it's still an enormous population decline.

Not necessarily. Really depends on how densely populated the warring societies are, as well as cultural norms. For instance, there could be cultural norms against killing elites (think feudal Europe, where nobles were more often ransomed for money) or the purpose of war could be more geared to slave-raiding, hence sparing war captives (like in West African warfare).

Yeah, I had some hesitations about that. I probably should have included a tl note in this instance though. It's also why I decided not to use the English terms for the months and opted to say "first month" instead of January.
